El río Mekong es la madre de todos los ríos, y provee el sustento millones de personas en la región.Pero está en peligro.
El gobierno de Laos planifica construir una segundala represaen la corriente principal del bajo Mekong: la represaDon Sahong. Si se construye, la principal vía del Mekongel -el canal Hou Sahong -, quedará completamente bloqueado poniendo en peligro la migración anual de peces por toda la región. Las consecuencias serán enormes para la seguridad alimentaria y el sustento de muchas comunidades en Laos, Camboya, Tailandia y Vietnam.
La vida en esta región a lo largo de todo el Mekong están indisolublemente ligadas al río que provee una fuerte identidad y una rica historia, así como fuente inagotable de ingresos y seguridad alimentaria.
El lugar en el que se pretende construir la represa Don Sahong es una sección única del río Mekong, hogar de una de las últimas poblaciones del delfín Irrawady y de las icónicas cataratas Khone Phapheng, cerca de un sitio protegido por la convención internacional Ramsar aguas abajo en Camboya.
Se espera que los cuatro gobiernos de la región se reúnan en enero, al final de un proceso de consulta regional de seis meses, para decidir el futuro del Mekong.
Este es un momento crítico para hacer oír nuestras voces y hacer un llamamiento a los líderes del Mekong, para que dejen de jugar con las vidas y el futuro de los recursos vitales para las gentes que dependen del Mekong. Por favor, pide a los gobiernos de Laos, Camboya, Tailandia y Vietnam que cancelen la represa Don Sahong y busquen fuentes de energía más sustentables para asegurar el futuro de los peces del río Mekong y sus gentes.
The Mekong River is the mother of all Southeast Asian rivers, providing life-sustaining resources to millions of people. The future of the Mekong and her people are in jeopardy, however. The government of Laos plans to build the Don Sahong Dam – the second dam proposed for construction on the Lower Mekong mainstream – on the main pathway in the Mekong that allows for year-round fish migration. If built, the Don Sahong Dam will entirely block the Hou Sahong Channel, endangering fish migration throughout the region, with far-reaching consequences for food and livelihood security in Laos, Cambodia, Thailand and Vietnam.
Lives in this area and throughout the Mekong are intricately entwined with the river that provides an identity and rich history, as well as a source of income and food security. The planned site of the Don Sahong Dam is a unique section of the Mekong River, home to one of the last remaining populations of critically endangered Irrawaddy dolphins as well as the iconic Khone Phapheng waterfalls, and near an internationally protected Ramsar wetland site in downstream Cambodia.
All four governments of the Mekong region are expected to meet in January, at the end of a six-month regional consultation process, to decide the future of the Don Sahong Dam.
Now is the time for us to make our voices heard and call on Mekong leaders to stop gambling with the lives of their people and future of the vital resources the river supports.
Please call on the governments of Laos, Cambodia, Thailand and Vietnam to cancel the Don Sahong Dam and seek more sustainable energy options to protect the future of the Mekong River’s fish and her people.

We left the school and traveled a short distance to the processing plant to see how bananas are harvested, packaged, and shipped. We've seen this process before down in Guatemala but this place was different. The workers all seemed to be very happy with their work, laughing and joking about the gringos watching the process. I figure it's because they're the owners of the company, not some corporate conglomerate riding shotgun over them.
I found the article referenced above and I have to say I'm very impressed with the people in this town. They live in a beautiful place and they are really working hard to keep it beautiful. I respect them for that and I'm very appreciative of them letting us come in to have a glimpse.

Las Áreas Protegidas Privadas han crecido explosivamente en Chile a contar de los años 90. Se estima la existencia de unas 500 Áreas Protegidas Privadas que cubren más de 1 millón 400 mil hectáreas en todo el país. La limitación de recursos y la lentitud del estado Chileno han estimulado que personas, comunidades e inversionistas con un sentido de custodia de la naturaleza adquieran grandes áreas aún no protegidas con el objetivo de preservar el valor escénico y recreativo asi como también de instalar negocios llamados "eco-sustentables". Muchos de estos proyectos no han estado excentos de polémica, existe suspicacia y dudas sobre sus reales fines y el posible daño soterrado al ecosistema, lo que ha concitado contrapuestas reacciones.
Uno de los mas exitosos sin duda es la Reserva Biológica Huilo Huilo, el primer parque privado en ser reconocido como Reserva de la Biósfera por la UNESCO (2007) por proteger el “Bosque templado lluvioso de los Andes australes” también conocido como "Selva Valdiviana" el segundo mayor bosque templado lluvioso que queda en el mundo, único en Sudamérica. El parque a lo largo de los años se ha ido convirtiendo en un gigantesco parque de atracciones natural que cuenta con varios llamativos hoteles que destacan por su arquitectura orgánica integrada con el medio ambiente. Uno de ellos fue seleccionado entre los 21 hoteles mas increibles del mundo, la Montaña Mágica Lodge que tiene forma de un cono recubierto con roca volcánica de cuyo extremo superior emerge una cascada de agua que ha permitido que la flora nativa del lugar crezca en forma natural cubriendo toda la fachada del hotel.

Private Protected Areas have grown strongly in Chile starting in the 90s. There are some 500 private protected areas covering more than 1 million 400 thousand hectares in the country is estimated. Limited financial resources and the slow Chilean state have encouraged that individuals, communities and investors with a sense of nature stewardship acquire large areas not yet protected in order to preserve the scenic and recreational value as well as installation businesses called "eco-sustainable ". Many of these projects have not been exempt from controversy, there is suspicion and doubt about their real purposes and possible underground ecosystem damage, which has attracted mixed reactions.
One of the most successful certainly is Huilo Huilo Biological Reserve, the first private park to get recognized as a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO (2007) protecting the "Temperate rainforest of the southern Andes" also known as "Valdivian Rainforest" the second largest temperate rainforest left in the world, unique in South America. The park over the years has grown into a gigantic natural amusement park with several distinctive hotels notable for their integrated environmental organic architecture. One of them was selected among the 21 most amazing hotels in the world. The Magic Mountain Lodge which is shaped like a cone covered with volcanic rock of the upper end emerges a waterfall that has allowed the native flora of the place to grow naturally till covering the entire facade of the hotel.
Huilo Huilo Biological Reserve is located in the Los Rios Region in southern Chile 860 kms from the capital Santiago 320 km north of the city of Puerto Montt between Panguipulli and Pirihuico lakes heart of north Patagonian Andes. It has an area of 100,000 hectares includes part of northern and south eastern Choshuenco volcano slopes and Lake Pirihueico southern shores. Unos 6000 neumáticos, botellas de vidrio y plásticas y más de 14.000 latas de aluminio, todos ya utilizados, son parte de la materia prima que junto a cemento, tirantería de madera, troncos y cartón dieron forma a la estructura de 300 metros cuadrados
La obra contó con la asistencia técnica y presencia de Michel Reynolds, creador de la bioarquitectura. Dio academias a quienes iban a ser parte de los trabajos y los formó además para que el mensaje de cuidado ambiental vaya más allá del edificio
Trabajaron para terminar la obra en un mes ,500 voluntarios.
