KISSIMMEE, FLA. – Four Soldiers from Mission Support Element, 143d Sustainment Command (Expeditionary), joined thousands of service members, veterans and their families who gathered at the Westgate Resort in Kissimmee for free food, live music and heartfelt fellowship during the second annual Military Appreciation Weekend Concert held May 5, 2018.

Westgate Resorts’ CEO David Siegel opened the property to more than 1,500 military families for a complimentary, three-night stay that culminated in a free concert that featured the Chris Weaver Band.

Alongside the complimentary concessions and children activities, the 143d ESC Soldiers set up and managed two static displays featuring one of the unit’s Humvees and Light Medium Tactical Vehicle. The vehicles attracted hundreds of children, dozens of young adults and even a few veterans who climbed aboard the driver’s seat, donned an Advanced Combat Helmet and put their hands on the steering wheel.

In addition to the dozens of pop, rock, country and R&B songs played by the Chris Weaver Band, the concert offered a military flair complete with the presentation of the colors by Veterans of Foreign Wars Command Post 4287, the singing of the national anthem by American Idol contestant Alyssa Raghu and a helicopter flyover conducted by the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office.

Among the long list of VIPs was Florida Gov. Rick Scott who shook hands and took pictures with the 143d ESC Soldiers.

The concert concluded with fireworks that illuminated the night sky, its colorful patterns bouncing off thousands of fluttering flags and smiling faces.

SALEM, Ore. – Members of USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) led hands-on presentations about forestry and native plants during Oregon State University’s weeklong 4H summer camp, Aug. 13, 2015. About 160 middle school students from cities across the state attended the camp, and about 90 percent of those students come from minority backgrounds (African American, Latino, Native American and Asian). NRCS employees talked to the students about career options in natural resources, and demonstrated how to assess the age and health of a tree and how to identify several native Oregon plants. The camp is one of three weeklong camps hosted by Oregon State University’s 4-H team, with help from NRCS and other agencies and partners in the area. NRCS has an active partnership with OSU to support this annual summer camp. The camp is part of a larger effort to engage Latino students and other underserved youth in activities that will help them improve their academic skills, develop leadership skills, learn about career opportunities and how to prepare for them, and engage them in healthy physical activities. With support from AKF, this entrepreneur was able to invest in new plum drying equipment. Prior to having this equipment, the business would lose a lot of plums as there was no market to sell them before they went bad. With AKF’s support, this entrepreneur can now dry up to 2 tonnes plums within 38 hours and sells them to local and international markets. Through the expansion of his business he has been able to employ more people and has plans to expand the business further with his increased profits.

Little clay and little free time can bring about the good products and solutions. The little piece of blue clay that I had transformed into starred tortoise in its earlier version / birth (flic.kr/p/mnLEA8) has been given the shape of a human hand, using my hand as a replica, though the replication % is close to only 2% :) On completion, my acquaintance at office had decided to try its stability and placed his iPhone on it and it stood as steadily as Pisa tower, with very little support from the wall.
