While barns used to dominate farm sites throughout the countryside, they had a whole supporting cast of other buildings. Sometimes they were small while other times there were quite large buildings that sheltered hogs, sheep or cattle. Hard to tell what this intriguing building was but I suspect at least at one time it held chickens. On our farm, you could put chickens almost anywhere and they would be happy.

A wooden fence as a climbing support for a red climbing rose. For me, fences are often barriers that lock me out, but here the fence serves a good purpose.

One of my favourite places to be in Brighton is on the beach under the pier. A couple of months ago I was standing there, camera in hand, and couldn't figure out at first what was 'wrong'. Then I suddenly realised that all of the rope and net, which washes in on the tide and wraps itself around the supports under the pier, had disappeared along with the barnacles. I was heartbroken to see everything looking so sterile. I needn't have worried. How quickly it all comes back! I guess it has to be cleared from time to time, but I was very happy to recognise the view that I love again. :))

Anaklia (Georgian: ანაკლია) is a town and seaside resort in western Georgia. It is located in the Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti region, at the place where the Enguri River flows into the Black Sea.
The earliest settlement on Anaklia's territory dates back to the mid-Bronze Age and is typical to the Colchian culture. It is the Classical Heraclea of Colchis, Anaclia of later authors, and Anarghia of Archangelo Lamberti and Jean Chardin (both the 17th-century travelers). After the fragmentation of the Kingdom of Georgia in the 15th century, it was an important fortified town, sea port and fishing station within the Principality of Mingrelia. In 1723, the town was captured by the Ottoman Empire and converted into its maritime outpost and slave-trading locale. Western Georgian kingdom of Imereti regained control over Anaklia in 1770, seizing the opportunity of Ottoman Empire being at war with Russia (Russo-Turkish War (1768–1774)). Solomon I, the king of Imereti, was supposed to be supported in this endeavor by a small Russian contingent under General Totleben, but the Russian troops retreated before a clash against the Turks.
In 1802, Kelesh-Bey Sharvashidze, the pro-Turkish ruler of the neighboring Principality of Abkhazia, capitalized on the internecine feuds in Mingrelia, and forced Prince Grigol Dadiani of Mingrelia into surrendering Anaklia, taking Grigol’s son and heir, Levan, as a hostage. When Mingrelia accepted the Russian protectorate in 1803, the Russian commander in Georgia, Prince Tsitsianov, demanded that Kelesh-Bey release Levan. On his refusal, Tsitsianov sent Major General Ion Rykgof into Abkhazia. In March 1805, the Russians took hold of Anaklia and threatened to march against Sukhum-Kaleh, forcing the Abkhazian prince to release Dadiani. The capture of Anaklia drew an Ottoman protest, however, and Tsitsianov hastened to disavow his subordinate and even apologize for his action, removing a Russian garrison from Anaklia. However, the incident added to an increasing tension between the two empires. When the next Russo-Turkish War broke out in 1806, the Russian forces restored Redoubt Kali and Anaklia to the Mingrelian prince Levan who would later relinquish the control of these forts to the Russian administration. (See Russian conquest of the Caucasus#Black Sea Coast.) In the 1850s, Anaklia was a small but strongly fortified seaport, which had a custom-house and carried on a considerable trade with Turkey.
Subsequently, the importance of the Anaklia port significantly reduced, but it remained a minor Black Sea Fleet base in the Soviet times.
After the War in Abkhazia (1992–93), a Russian peacekeeping post was opened at Anaklia in 1994. In 2006, the Ministry of Defense of Georgia reported numerous damages inflicted by the Russian soldiers upon the 17th-century fortress of Anaklia and accused the peacekeepers of installing latrines and baths within the walls of the fort. Following a series of protests by the Georgians, the Russian military post was withdrawn in July 2007.
A monument has been erected in Anaklia on May 21, 2012, commemorating Russia's expulsion of the Circassian people from the region following the conclusion of the Caucasian War in the 1860s. The May 21 date was chosen to coincide with the day on which the Circassian people themselves commemorate the expulsion, which the Georgian government has recognized as an act of genocide. The monument was designed by Khusen Kochesokov, a sculptor from the North Caucasus region of Kabardino-Balkaria.

The Naugatuck Railroad is that rather rare tourist railroad and museum which is also a common carrier freight railroad. However, as a non profit the freight revenue returns to support the ongoing preservation, restoration, and expanded excursion goals.
This view looks north near MP 6.9 on the Naugatuck Railroad's mainline as NAUG 686 shoves a cut of empty construction debris/trash gons north for storage on the mainline just south of the Thomaston Station since no passenger excursions were operating at the time during the museum's winter off season. This unit is an EMD GP9 painted in a scheme mirroring its original look as Norfolk and Western 686 for which it was built in Mar. 1959. It and sister 859 came here in 2019 from South Carolina's Hampton and Branchville Railroad.
The the train is passing under Reynolds Bridge which carries Waterbury Road (unsigned State Road 848) over the Naugatuck River. Built in 1928, it is one of a small number of surviving concrete open-spandrel arch bridges in the state. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004. The bridge is a three-arch open spandrel concrete structure, with four concrete beam approach spans on either side. The main span is 169 feet long, while the secondary arches are each 97 feet; the brige has a total length of 487 feet. At the time of its construction in 1928, the open-spandrel design was used for long concrete bridge crossings, and this was the longest designed by the Connecticut State Highway Department up to that time. The Cornwall Bridge, built a few years later over the Housatonic River and railroad, has a longer span. It has also been featured here and photos of it can be found in my Housatonic album.
As for the railroad, the Naugatuck is the operating arm of the Railroad Museum of New England. Home to one of the largest collections of preserved historic railroad equipment in New England, RMNE and its predecessor organizations have been active since the 1960s and the RMNE name was adopted in 1987.
This line goes back to the original Naugatuck Railroad which was chartered in 1845, to be built between Bridgeport and Winsted, adjacent to the Naugatuck River. Construction began in April, 1848, and was completed by May, 1849. The first regular train service began June 11, 1849. The New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad began leasing the Naugatuck in 1887; and formally merged it in 1906.
Passenger service between Waterbury and Winsted was discontinued in 1958. Facing hard economic times as a result of the decline of its New england industrial base in the 1960s, the New Haven Railroad became a part of the Penn Central merger on January 1, 1969. The branch line suffered during the Penn Central years, losing freight customers and falling into disrepair and was left out of inclusion in Conrail by the USRA's final system plan.
In 1976, the State of Connecticut stepped in to save the northern portion when it purchased the line between Waterbury and Torrington, and Conrail was named the designated operator. In 1982, Boston & Maine leased the line line when under progressive president Alan Dustin it expanded into Connecticut for the first time in its history. But traffic continued to decline on the route, and Guilford Rail system (owners of the B&M) discontinued regular freight service on August 2, 1995. The future of the line was in question. Looking for a new home where it could establish a tourist operation the RMNE moved from Essex on the Valley Railroad to Thomaston.
The RMNE restored the original Naugatuck Railroad name from 1845 when it obtained a state charter for its new wholly owned operating subsidiary on June 7, 1995. The first passenger trains ran in October of 1996. They operate regular excursion service on the southern portion of the lines and occasional charters and specials to the northern end in Torrington.
In 2016 the the NAUG also began regular freight operations when Cherry Hill Construction opened its brand new C&D Transfer Facility called Frost Bridge about 2.5 miles south of this point. To learn more about the Naugatuck's freight operations check out their page here: www.naugfreight.com/

Antonio Gaudi took the opportunity to turn even the underneath supporting structure into a work of art. These columns support the Grand Terrace directly above, also known as, the Greek Theater. The terrace offers expansive views across the city including a fine view of Basílica de la Sagrada Família, Antonio Gaudi's masterwork, and now the symbol of Barcelona. Parc Güell offered Gaudi an opportunity to give in fully to his most exuberant and whimsical fantasies.

Park Güell (Catalan: Parc Güell [ˈpaɾɡ ˈɡweʎ]; Spanish: Parque Güell) is a complex of parks and gardens in Barcelona with architectural elements, located in the La Salut neighborhood of the Gràcia district in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. It is situated on the southern slope of the Turó del Carmel hill, part of the Collserola mountain range, overlooking the city. The separate Parc del Carmel lies on the northern side of the same hill.
In the context of Barcelona's late 19th and early 20th-century urban expansion, Catalan industrialist and art patron Eusebi Güell commissioned architect Antoni Gaudí, a leading figure of the aesthetic movement in Catalan modernism, to design a park.
Construction took place between 1900 and 1914, and the park officially opened to the public in 1926. In 1984, UNESCO designated the park a World Heritage Site, recognizing it as part of the "Works of Antoni Gaudí" collection and stating "the architecture of the park combined elements from the Arts and Crafts movement, Symbolism, Expressionism, and Rationalism, and presaged and influenced many forms and techniques of 20th-century Modernism."

Hi everyone. This year I'm participating in a Flickr Photo Advent Calendar, organised by the wonderful Eva. Thirty one days in December, thirty one photographers and therefore, thirty one photographs. We have a group here on flickr, to ensure you guys can follow along.
This year has been very bittersweet. I've experienced one of the biggest (if not the biggest) photographic opportunity of my life (details about that will be released next year), I've finished university and have shot with some artists I've admired for years. But, behind the scenes I've been dealing with an incredible hardship in my personal life - something I am still coming to terms with and probably will be coming to terms with for the rest of my life. Please hug your loved ones this Christmas and be present. Be in the moment and treasure the ones you're surrounded by. I'll see you all next year and thank you all again for your amazing support. I'm really proud of what I've created this year and look forward to what's next.
