United in support...

From Hurricane Sandy to Sandy Hook, from the Boston bombings to Philadelphia's building collapse this past June, this has been the year of the first responder.

We invite you to stand with American communities as the World Affairs Council presents its 2013 Atlas Award in recognition of, and gratitude to, the men and women who so bravely respond when disaster strikes. The Council invites these heroes to be guests at this special event as we pay tribute to those who serve our communities by being the first on the scene in critical situations.

And acknowledging sacrifice...

This unique event will acknowledge, in a meaningful way, the sacrifices made by first responders. To this end, your generosity will be reflected in a gift to the Newtown Lions Club Foundation -- Sandy Hook Elementary Fund and the Philadelphia Hero Thrill Show.

Governor of Connecticut Dannel P. Malloy accepted the 2013 Atlas Award on behalf of our nation's first responders.

The Council thanks its sponsors for this event:

AMETEK, Inc., CDI Corporation, PECO, Progressive Business Publications, The Satell Center for Executive Education, UGI Corporation, Aqua, and technology partner Comcast/NBC10.

Golden hour light softens the weathered texture of wooden supports as they create a rhythmic tunnel through the lush, dense rows of a Mendoza vineyard. The composition utilizes a centered, linear perspective to draw the viewer’s eye deep into the verdant canopy, emphasizing the tranquility and heritage of Finca Adalgisa. Beneath the vine leaves, the earthy tones of the path contrast with the vibrant green foliage, highlighting the fertile volcanic soil essential to Argentine viticulture. As the day wanes, the sky takes on a delicate, muted hue that reflects the serene atmosphere of this historical estate. Every element, from the gnarled stakes to the carefully cultivated vines, speaks to a legacy of craftsmanship passed down through generations. The surrounding trees provide a soft, blurred backdrop, isolating the vineyard rows within a private, pastoral sanctuary. This scene captures the intimate relationship between the land and the viticulturist, frozen in a moment of quiet, agricultural beauty. The natural lighting enhances the depth of field, bringing the foreground architecture into sharp focus while softening the distant horizon. Visitors exploring this region often find themselves enveloped by the rich, grounding scent of the earth and the promise of the coming harvest. This image is a collaborative production by Samuel Jeffery and Audrey Bergner for Project 23.

Hashmat, from Faryab province, is a deportee from Germany. He says, “I sold my land, my house and everything I had and migrated to Europe. I destroyed my life. I have five kids and they were about to sink in sea. We had no value there, we had to move from one camp to another.” He’s now back in Afghanistan with his family. “When I landed in my country, I kissed its soil,” says Hashmat.

Economic growth has slowed down considerably, unemployment is on the rise, and the ongoing insecurity hampers investment. All these provoke many of the talented and educated Afghans to migrate.

PANMUNJOM - With weapons at the ready, members of 194th Combat

Sustainment Support Battalion set out at dawn to conduct convoy

live-fire training here, March 25.

The fast-paced exercise exposed Soldiers to many of the real-world

perils found on today's asymmetric battlefield, culminating in a series

of drills designed to hone their skills in reacting to road-side bombs

and enemy small-arms fire.

"These Soldiers have been training for the past six months to prepare

for this day and their hard work is evident in the outstanding

performance I've seen throughout the battalion," said Command Sgt. Maj.

Nichelle S. Fails.

At times gritty and intense, the Soldiers worked in teams to zero in on

enemy targets with their rifles and machine guns.

"This scenario is interesting and very realistic," said Pvt. Jiwoo Kim,

a KATUSA assigned to the battalion.

Pvt. Dylan Florres, a battalion mechanic and one of the day's enemy

combatant role-players, sees the training as realistic and a good way to

build unit cohesion. "What we are doing is basically helping Soldiers

learn how to train safely and work as a team," he said.

"Everybody is highly motivated and ready to fight," said Chief Warrant

Officer 4 Joseph Williams, HHC, 194th Combat Support Sustainment

Battalion, safety officer. "Taking care of our Soldiers is very

important, we don't want any injuries. That's why we do risk assessments

and go over all of the details to make this a very safe, yet realistic,

training environment."

Master Sgt. Kenneth Ashley, the day's pyrotechnics NCO, described the

training as important in building teamwork within the battalion. "Here

in Korea and in places like Iraq and Afghanistan, we need to make sure

our Soldiers know how to react under fire and to ensure they are

prepared for anything the enemy throws at them."
