Soldiers from the Virginia Beach-based 529th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion conduct a command post exercise Jan. 28, 2014, at Camp Pendleton in Va. Beach to prepare for an upcoming federal mobilization. The 529th CSSB received a mobilization order to enter federal active service for duty in Kuwait as part of Operation Enduring Freedom, and approximately 70 Soldiers will begin serving on federal active duty June 19, 2014. The Soldiers are scheduled to report to Fort Hood, Texas, for approximately 45 days of mobilization training before deploying. Once they arrive in Kuwait, they are scheduled to operate as a mission command headquarters with the task of planning and executing combat sustainment support for U.S. and coalition forces in Kuwait and the surrounding region. Honda is traditionally known for automobiles, but for years the company has been conducting research to develop technologies that enhance the broader theme of human mobility. The Bodyweight Support Assist is a recent prototype that assists workers who spend extended periods of time on their feet standing, climbing or descending stairs, or maintaining semi-crouched positions, such as assembly-line workers. The device may also help the elderly get around easier. It is a next-generation product for Honda, based on studies of human walking that resulted in ASIMO, the company’s humanoid robot.
The Bodyweight Support Assist, an exoskeleton for the lower body, reduces the load and stress on legs, hips, knees, and ankles. The device’s simple form consists of a seat, frame, and shoes. To use it, a person straddles the slender frame, slips on the shoes, and puts the seat into position. Two computer-controlled motors obtain information from sensors in the shoes to determine the support needed based on the bending and stretching of the user’s knees. The assist force is directed towards the person’s center of gravity, just as with human legs, enabling the device to provide help in various movements. Weighing less than fifteen pounds, the Bodyweight Support Assist is powered by a lithium-ion battery that lasts two hours.

The Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve, or ESGR, held a Boss Lift event at Fort Indiantown Gap on May 8-9. The Boss Lift program provides opportunities for employers to learn the benefits and challenges involved with employing National Guard and reserve members. Participants toured several training areas and witnessed demonstrations and exercises such as the Pre-mobilization Training Assistance Element, A-10 Warthog target firing, and an EC-130J air drop. Attendees also got some hands-on experience in vehicle and flight simulators. ESGR’s Boss Lift highlights the value and skills military personnel bring to their civilian jobs and expresses gratitude to employers for their continued support of the military and National Guard and reserve members in the work force.

Supporting Liebig 14 - Berlin
Liebig 14 is one of Berlin longest running autonomous housing projects, serving as a space for collective living as well as community and political organising for over 20 years. After a 4 year legal process the owners of the building have finally been given legal permission to evict the house on the 2nd of February 2011. Squatted shortly after the fall of the wall in what was a derelict area of east Berlin, Liebig 14’s attempted eviction is just one sympton of a rampaging processes of gentrification which is rapidly forcing poorer residents out of the city centre and tearing apart the city’s radical infrastructure.
Liebig 14 is proud to be a part of a long history of autonomous spaces in Berlin and around the world. In working against capitalism, social hierarchy and discrimination, autonomous spaces take small but concrete steps towards wider political emancipation and self-determined living.
The eviction of Liebig 14 will be a loss not only to Berlin’s alternative project infrastructure but also a wider attack on projects everywhere attempting to build alternative, more socially just, and more sustainable modes of social organization. Solidarity with free spaces under threat in Berlin, Amsterdam, London and worldwide is key if we are to sustain these vital resources.
