This was the night there was a manager who was rushing everyone to leave very quickly after close so I didn't get many shots down the boulevard as I had intended. When I was about to setup to shoot down the opposite way he actually told me to leave the park so that's kind of a bummer. Oh well, next time. In the mean time enjoy this one.

I remember seeing a picture that the great Tom Bricker (thanks for the inspiration Tom) posted a couple years ago of this unload area, and I remember thinking – gosh, I don't remember this at all. I'd been on the ride several times before and just flat out overlooked the theming. So naturally, I set out to pay more attention to this area and perhaps even capture a picture of it if possible. Well, although it looks like a fairly easy picture to shoot, it is far from it. You literally have seconds to wait until everyone clears, then turn around to grab a quick shot before the stretch limo hauls off to grab more fans for the concert. That and the Cast Members of this area shuffle you off in a hurry and won't even allow – even being behind the safety lines – to wait around. I tried because Olivia and my Dad were put on a different limo so I tried to wait to get a shot of them in the unload area.
As you can see I was just a split second from getting the limo in focus as it started to go. Still a fairly decent shot though and I think it somewhat helps to illustrate just how awesome the theming is of this amazing attraction.

Thanks for stopping by, and I hope you're having a great day!
Just got back from a week down in Walt Disney World… I took the girls and their friend and we had a great time, and Mom and new baby Norah had a great opportunity for some mother / daughter bonding time. Didn’t bring a tripod and packed pretty light in the way of lenses, so I wasn’t at the top of my game – but I think I came away with some halfway decent stuff to share.
So I learned a valuable lesson on this trip. Don’t fill a 64gb card with no backup. I got close to full and went to transfer the photos over to my laptop, and the computer nor camera would recognize the card… said it needed to be formatted. I was able to find some software that did data recovery but was only able to recover the .jpegs, which stinks because I exclusively use the RAW file for all my edits. That was a little over half the trip worth of photos… I’m going to go out and buy four 16gb cards to carry from now on.
Stayed at the Port Orleans French Quarter, which I think is now my favorite resort especially for the money. If money is no object I would still choose the Polynesian, but for the money you can’t go wrong with French Quarter. I will post some pictures I took from the resort.
On this particular day at the Studios, I forced myself to use the 14-24mm f/2.8 UWA lens by bringing only it and leaving the rest of the lenses back in the room. This was a good thing, because I enjoy shooting with it, but just don’t ever think to use UWA very often for some reason. This shot for example, I would have never had thought to compose had I had other lens options. This is a 7x handheld bracketed HDR. I also don’t shoot into the sun very often but decided to a few times on this trip to see how they turned out after seeing some of the great “into the sun” shots some of my awesome contacts on Flickr have posted. And yes I thought of Tom Bricker when I framed this shot and realized I could get the entire palm trees in the frame because of the UWA lens :=0) Thanks for the inspiration, Tom.

Grauman's Chinese Theatre
The Big Sorcerer Hat
If ever there were symbolism underlying the relationship between structures, it's between the Big Sorcerer's Hat and Grauman's Chinese Theatre. The relationship of these park icons mirrors the story featuring the hat, The Sorcerer's Apprentice, quite closely. For those unfamiliar, in the now famous story, Mickey Mouse plays wizard Yen Sid's lazy assistant who, out of the sight of his master, attempts to perform spells to dispense with his chores. To do so, Mickey dons the sorcerer's hat and brings a broom to "life" through a spell to fetch water from a well and pouring it into a stone basin. While the broom is performing his work, he falls asleep to later awaken to find that the basin is overflowing while the broom is still filling it up. Mickey exacerbates the situation by grabbing an axe and chopping the broom to pieces, with each piece coming to life, forming hundreds of new brooms, and causing an even greater flood. Eventually, the master, Yen Sid, returns and calmly diffuses the situation.
Similarly, Grauman's Theatre is the master and the Sorcerer's Hat its apprentice. For years, Grauman's Theatre had carefully represented the park and acted as its "weenie." One day while its guard was down (likely for refurbishment), the Hat had the idea that it could help perform the task of the venerable Theatre and in doing so brand the park as "Disney" (for it felt this would alleviate undue confusion between Disney's studio-oriented theme park and one a few miles down the road). It summoned all of the spells it knew, and placed itself right in front of the Theatre. However, thematic and architectural disjointedness ensued, for the Hat had acted haphazardly, without consideration of how preempting the role of the Theatre may have its negative affects. To combat this, the Hat brought in a Pin Trading Store to occupy space below it, for everyone loved Pin Trading! This only exacerbated the problem, as the issues continued to build. Luckily, the Theatre returned to claim its rightful place and calmly diffused the situation by moving the Hat to the back of the park, where it acted as an identification that the park is a Disney product, and thus allowed the Theatre to be the fitting park weenie and Studios Icon (okay, this last portion of the story is still being written).
Although this allegory may be a bit over the top, it seems apt to me. I consider this to be one of my better shots from our honeymoon, and I usually have a good story to go along with the 'good' shots, but in this case, I do not. Never being one to let the picture speak for itself, I felt it appropriate to concoct a subplot between the subjects!

It’s been awhile… felt good to edit a picture – and now to post it. Got some MAJOR catching up to do. I’ve been kind of lurking and you all have been posting some incredible pictures lately!
I kind of think I pushed this one a little too far. It is a 5X handheld HDR. I think I overdid it with the sky.

I know it was a sad day in the Pasant and Disbrow households when Miley Cyrus recently announced Hannah Montana would be biting the dust, meaning that Ms. Montana could not take over the reigns from Aerosmith in Rock 'N' Rollercoaster. Don't be too worried, guys, your "second favorite rockstars", the Jonas Brothers, could still take over someday if Disney really wants to ruin this attraction.
Processing an image for today took decidedly longer than it should have. I actually started processing 4 different images, before deciding that each of them sucked, only to arrive at this one. On any other day, I probably would waited for a "do over" on this shot (as I'd like a longer blur trail), but I was fed up with processing, so I decided it was good enough to post.

This fountain sits at the corners of Hollywood and Sunset Boulevards in DHS. I'm sure it's fashioned after a famous landmark in Hollywood, although I don't know what it is. If someone does, please let me know. Disney doesn't do anything by happenstance.
If you have followed my stream for any length of time you will know that I tend to shoot wide landscapes, distant shadowy figures and deserted beaches (except for an occasional zombie or mermaid.) Infrequent forays into street photography have usually been sneaky candids from a nice, safe telephoto kind of distance. All that changed recently when I was fortunate enough to spend a day shooting with one of my flickr idols Billy Plummer, aka may the circle remain unbroken. I have been a fan of his since I joined flickr but we had never previously met. I can't begin to explain what a blast it was. A fantastic guy with amazing people skills, jaw-dropping creativity and technical brilliance - not to mention a great sense of humor. For a few fantastic hours, we ventured into parts of the city I rarely visit, armed with nothing more than the 50mm f1.4 for some up close and personal street portraits. Definitely outside of my comfort zone. The payoff was that I got to enter Billy's world and watch the maestro work his magic - and hope that a bit of the magic would rub off on me...

I was really glad to be able to shoot a lot more Hollywood Studios for my stream this trip. They made it really easy on me too with a 7:30 closing I didn't even have to stay out late to get some empty park shots. Also, per my wife's request, I admit to shamelessly stealing the idea/angle of this shot from a shot she took last year. Anyway... now that that's out of the way, enjoy!

Walking around Silverlake prior to
a Fuxedos show at the El Cid, I happened
by the old Sunset Pacific motel on
Sunset Boulevard as the sun was beginning
to dip into the great Pacific to the west,
and the moon rising in the
blue Angeleno sky,
and I took this photo of
the old world-weary motel with the moon
punctuating the deep blue night
behind the silhouette
of a Canary Palm.
Morning had to come
You'll be walking in the sun
Living in the day
But last night i was about to throw it all away.
I finally made it. I'm not sure what I was expecting. We passed by it so many times that it became a part of the scenery. I had trouble imagining that you had once stood there, laughed there, breathed there. What a strange concept of place. It's all so different now. Every second it changes and there's another stranger walking by, unassuming. I'm thankful for the things you've given me, but it's hard to know where to place them in my life. I'm always learning a lesson, ever-changing. But you're not, you're always going to remain the same. Thank you for growing with me. Even if it's all my own perspective. Thank you. Thank you.

Backlot Tour
Catastrophe Canyon
Ending my streak of 6 straight EPCOT Center shots (be proud, JeffB), I decided to post a shot that's fairly unique to my photostream--one from the Backlot Tour.
While this attraction is easily better than the abomination that is "Lights, Motors, Action!" December marked the first time Sarah and I ever went on the tour together. Part of the reason for this, for me at least, is hearing how abridged the tour had become. It was on the decline when I last went with my family (2002, I think), but it is a shadow of its former self, now. This is sort of depressing, as this was once the best attraction at the Studios, and my favorite thing there. In any case, Catastrophe Canyon is still awesome--it just would be great to see the rest of the attraction brought up to snuff. I doubt that will happen as it's unlikely that it will ever be a big draw with today's theme park audience, no matter what changes are made to it. As Bob Dylan sang, the times, they are a-changin'.

Twilight Zone Tower of Terror - HDR
October 2009
Something tells me you're not unlocking this door with the key of imagination. After the recent success of other Flickr contacts at posting their shots from the Studios, I decided to try my hand at a Tower of Terror shot for today.
I spent a lot of time back in this area on our recent trip. Part of it may have been me scraping off the rust, but I wasn't pleased with most of these shots. I don't think I made the most of the UWA, and I wish I had done some things differently. I like this shot alright, but I feel it doesn't bring anything new to the table (plus there's all sorts of odd unintentional distortion in it).
This shot is a two exposure HDR merged in Photoshop CS3 with the layers masked back on top of the HDR, and some more stuff done to it. No tone mapping was performed. Much time was spent making the saturation correct in the Tower.
If, like me, you're a fan of both Christmas and the Twilight Zone, be sure to check out Hallmark's new Twilight Zone Christmas ornament. It's awesome!

7528 Sunset Blvd., Hollywood CA.
This sign was removed on 9/28/18, and is apparently the Museum of Neon Art now has it in its collection.
The red and golden colours of this sunset is just amazing.
This is a view taken through the branches of a tree.
It looks more abstract with the silhouettes of the branches.
I see more sunrises than sunsets, must try to catch more sunsets.
Have a great Sunday!
