One flash through a shoot-through umbrella directly in front of models face, another flash aimed at the background with a gridspot.
I was setting up to do a video when I realized the closer I got to the modeling light on my strobe, the more my camera adjusted itself to the new environment, while I, a mere human, had to squint to even be a close. Even so I could not see the detail that this device was able to capture and in that moment I was truly appreciative of the technology and how it bridged the gap between my inability and infinite possibility. And now I share this with you, the otherwise impossible close up view of a strobe light ( the music I played just happened to be what I was playing... It all worked out wonderfully)
I got a new Alien Bees Ringflash (ABR800) to shoot the class photos at my kiddo's school. This is my attempt at trying to figure out how to use it (most of an afternoon). I'm still waiting for delivery of my Pocket Wizards so that I can have a 550EX behind the subject to edgelight the hair. I have the ABR800 with the 30" Moon Unit on a stand slightly above the height of the subject, pointed down. I'm shooting with the Canon 5D Mk II and a Contax 85/1.4 at f/11. I am at the minimum focusing distance. The strobe is set between 1/4th and 1/8th power. 1/125th sec, ISO 100. These notes are mostly for me so I remember what the hell I did.
Strobist: Sb-28 and Vivitar 285HV @ full, one camera right, the other camera left. Sun behind subject, quite a bit to the left of camera.

There is a single 580ex on wireless E-TTL with exposure compesation set to -1. Geled with a blue-green gel.. as recommened by Strobist for flourscent lights.
I have a couple other in the series, one in tungsten and on in white, but I think I like this the best.

I used a disco strobe light that my old DJ housemate left behind (excellent find!) when he moved out. I experimanted with different shutter speeds and different strobe speeds, and the editing is mostly to contrast to give more definition to the outline.

For this image I made the rate of the strobe high and captured a lengthy exposure of the subject kicking across the frame.It's an interesting effect but I thought the strobe was too quick and end's up not revealing enough detail in the image
