This is way old. I was going through my camera and came across it. This was taken around Halloween time with a strobe light we had. I don't know why I never uploaded it before.

I got a new Alien Bees Ringflash (ABR800) to shoot the class photos at my kiddo's school. This is my attempt at trying to figure out how to use it (most of an afternoon). I'm still waiting for delivery of my Pocket Wizards so that I can have a 550EX behind the subject to edgelight the hair. I have the ABR800 with the 30" Moon Unit on a stand slightly above the height of the subject, pointed down. I'm shooting with the Canon 5D Mk II and a Contax 85/1.4 at f/11. I am at the minimum focusing distance. The strobe is set between 1/4th and 1/8th power. 1/125th sec, ISO 100. These notes are mostly for me so I remember what the hell I did.

Thanks to Erica Berger who gave me the chance to 2nd shoot for her at this incredibly beautiful wedding at the Brazilian Room here in the East Bay. She was even cool enough to let me try off camera lighting for the first time at a wedding. Here I completely eliminated all ambient light w/ the highest sync speed (1/250).

This Ford Escape will be in places where people need to be able to see it, and the strobe lights instlaled by Shore Cellular will make sure that happens.

Haven't uploaded for ages so heres some old-ish stuff. Got some new 35mm film shots coming soon and some experiments with disposable cameras.

i really am interested in doing some stroboscopic photography (i.e. www.rit.edu/~andpph/photofile-misc/strobe-motion-ta-08.jp... but since i am too poor to afford a nice flash with strobe capabilities, i decided to go another route...

this is a mechanical strobe which does basically the same thing (and you can take shots in the daytime as well!). by attaching a spinning disk in front of your lens, light can enter at intervals within one shot. here i have glued a ring attachment to some heavy cardboard, as well as a 6 volt motor which is attached to a 9 volt battery (with a switch in between). there is a slit cut at a 10 degree angle from the center. i have two problems however.

1) i wanted to go for more revolutions (so i can have more images in one shot), so i used a 6 volt motor instead of a higher voltage. it now spins like a dervish on crack, and ultimately the epoxy can't keep the disk attached; after 30 seconds it flys off into the wall. going to invest in a soldering iron to "rectumfy" this issue

2) when i began this project, i was borrowing someone's slr camera that had a smaller lens. of course the ring i attached doesn't fit my lens... GILMORE, NESTOR or ASEEL, if you are interested, i will send it to one of you to play with, and i will make another... (or i can make you new ones...)

First attempt at light painting with a single strobe and diffuser. Multiple flashes in a dark environment, 30 sec exposure.

Big change here was that I remembered about a foil glued to cardboard reflector I had put together a few weeks ago. Threw that in the mix to balance the light a bit, as well as get some on the hair. I got a little bit of the Rembrandt triangle in there, I guess :)

-edit: Ok, I stand corrected...not Rembrandt, but Narrow lighting. My old mic stand wouldn't go high enough to get 45degrees of elevation.

420ex set 5ft camera left 45deg from face, shot through DIY 3.5ft wide diffusion ring of white muslin - fired in ETTL, the only way the 420ex will fire wirelessly and -1 flash comp

Reflector was DIY cardboard with foil spray glued on, about 3x2ft big

All held together on old mic stands and clips

--can't wait to get some stands and a manual flash.
