Created using a powerful strobe light on a long exposure
Welcoming the new year with alcohol.
Blue Limonya vodka with blueberry.
backlit with single Vivitar 285HV and DIY softbox with black paper attached to midpoint to simulate twin striplights
Strobist: One large octo on camera right (at about 4-o-clock), silver reflector on left (at about 8-o-clock), monoblock bounced off ceiling in far background.
I've seen a few shots that I like recently in which everything seems blown out from the front. This is my effort.
I have two strobes at 1/2 power through white umbrellas about 5 feet from the subject on either side. 50mm f/1.4
@ ISO 200 | f/5.6 | 125th shutter | trigged with Cactus v2 radio trigger... it's the worst. don't get one. spend more money on something else.
photography course thurrock 1994....dark room strobe light plenty of thrashing about, done loads of these....this wasn't the best one!

Neighbours probably wondered what I was up to with repeat flashes firing off in the evening light and an axe being wielded around !! SB900 on camera in repeat flash master mode 1/64 power , 16 flashes at 3 Hz. ISO 400 f 7.1 shutter 4 seconds all in manual, single exposure. Second SB900 on light stand in remote mode repeating the flashes 2 metres away right.

I got a new Alien Bees Ringflash (ABR800) to shoot the class photos at my kiddo's school. This is my attempt at trying to figure out how to use it (most of an afternoon). I'm still waiting for delivery of my Pocket Wizards so that I can have a 550EX behind the subject to edgelight the hair. I have the ABR800 with the 30" Moon Unit on a stand slightly above the height of the subject, pointed down. I'm shooting with the Canon 5D Mk II and a Contax 85/1.4 at f/11. I am at the minimum focusing distance. The strobe is set between 1/4th and 1/8th power. 1/125th sec, ISO 100. These notes are mostly for me so I remember what the hell I did.
Thanks to Erica Berger who gave me the chance to 2nd shoot for her at this incredibly beautiful wedding at the Brazilian Room here in the East Bay. She was even cool enough to let me try off camera lighting for the first time at a wedding. Here I completely eliminated all ambient light w/ the highest sync speed (1/250).
