My best snoot yet.
Materials: strobe head and paint can (http://www.flickr.com/photos/mgolbe/5784513864), cookie tin cover, cylindrical salt container, toiler paper roll, two eye hooks, Cinefoil (or black construction paper or flat black paint), tape and glue.
After being unsatisfied with the "spot" quality of previous snoots, useful thought they are, I decided there must be a reason the professional snoots are all made with a step-down design, with several cylinders of decreasing diameter.
A little googling and I knew why they did it. With matte black interiors, the light entering the last cylinder is all coming directly from the source; none is coming in at an angle, thus none is bouncing out (even off matte black) at an angle.
The proof is in the pudding. In the middle shot I've artificially made the snoot visible at the right edge. It would also be visible in the frame of the bottom shot, but I did no artificial enhancing.
In the top shot the exit of the snoot looks white because the strobe is firing. With my eye hooks tightened down the cookie tin makes a good seal with the paint can and there are few leaks.
Notice the nice edge of the lit area; the contrast is sharp and well over 20 stops.
I shot this before we all descented from a ledge after climbing ice route "Krókur" in Glymsgil Iceland. Remote flash shot through umbrella.
Winter is coming and I'm looking into last winters climbing shots to get me excited. I've already started training and inspecting the gear.. cant wait !

My new Cactus V2s was testet with my collection of strobes (Vivitar and some vintage strobes)
Tonight we went to check out some water nearby. But the light was super boring so we tried out a bit of strobing. I got my trousers wet and too bad that there were no straw rolls but the results were pretty nice for a strobist beginner :)
What we look like after boughts of strenuous physical activity. Changes in appearance are readily apparent. Thinning and glistening of the skin, the apparent facial volume has depreciated! The approach to composition is different and interesting as well.

Strobist info: SB-600 1/8 power handheld left, FL-36R 1/16 handheld right, trigger from cls system
Three Yongnuo 560 iii flashes, one to the rear with shoot thru umbrella, one to front left and the other is front right above being hand held.
Strobe info: SL 580EXII on the right side os the câmera, slightly above the model + SL 430EXII on the background. Both triggered by the 60D built-in flash.
Dicranocephalus wallichi bourgoini, focus stack using studio strobe. Considerably lower definition than the speedlight image due to the monolight's long flash duration of about 1/1000 second, about ten times as long as the other flash. Full resolution at 1024px.

Strobe-setup is pretty clear if you look at the image.
