My next take on a practical, peumatic-driven Lego steam locomotive. The design is the "American" class 4-4-0 of the 1870ies.

The tender hides a capable pneumatic compressor that powers the 2 cylinder, long stroke 'steam' engine.

The "bopper" type caboose offers ample room for a battery box and rc receiver of choice. A Buwizz unit may be installed directly in the engine's cab, alternatively.

On of the pressing problems in rail vehicle design in the 19th century, next to the brake problem, was the coupling problem. I designed a new, brick-built coupler suitalbe for automatic coupling and decoupling, to circumvent the drawbacks and dangers of the contemporary link-and-pin coupling.

While there are some miniature prototypes possibly older than Puffing Billy, there are no other real contenders for oldest full-size steam locomotive in preservation than this 1813 engine which was first used in a British colliery. As far as steam locomotives go, this thing is practically a surviving dinosaur; now enjoying static display in the British Science Museum.

I have to take a moment and consider the steam locomotives I have been lucky enough to photograph this year span the development of steam from this 1813 example to modern preservation examples built in 2023. The Victorian era narrow gauge examples on the Talyllyn and Ffestiniog, the burly 20th century machines at the Nevada Northern, Gresley's fast Pacific locomotives in York, Union Pacific's gargantuan Big Boy on one of its regular PR tours, and back in Wales the young new build locomotives sharing space on the Ffestiniog with their Victorian originals. There are certainly many more steam locomotives in the world than those I have seen, but if I wanted to cut a quick sample size of steam locomotive highlights across the English speaking world on opposite hemispheres it is hard to beat that kind of sample selection.

The crew of 'Standard 5' no 73156 have a bit of banter with Pete beore leaving with the 1.00 pm Sunday lunch train: Dave the driver, Les his fireman (also a driver) and Duncan - one of the two main men behind the restoration of the engine.

Gauge 1 Lego model of 1813 locomotive. The loco has been redesigned several times during its long work life from 1813 to 1862. The model shows the last form, which is on display in the London Science Museum, and of which there is a detailed, working replica from 1906 in the Deutsches Museum, Munich.
