Panning is always a "hit and miss" affair. This was the best of the bunch but it's a shame that I didn't manage to get the entirety of the first wagon in the shot. "Sapper". Burrs. 25th February 2012.

Metre-gauge 0-6-0T 'Cambrai' stands somewhat forlornly on a section of track at Tywyn Wharf, the terminus of the Talyllyn Railway, in 1961.

The loco dates from 1888 and was no 5 on the Chemin de fer du Cambrésis in France. It was built by Corpet-Louvet, works no 493. In 1936 it was sold to the Loddington Tramway in the UK, passing to the Waltham Iron Ore Company's tramway in 1956, working there until 1958.

It is currently at the Irchester Narrow Gauge Railway Museum, on loan from the Narrow Gauge Railway Museum at Tywyn. The nameplates are from the original 'Cambrai', also built by Corpet-Louvet, dating from 1881.

The Loddington Tramway belonged to the Loddington Iron Ore Company and connected ironstone pits to the nearby standard gauge line from Kettering to Cransley. In 1958, the metre-gauge tramway was converted to standard gauge and worked as a branch from Cransley to Loddington.

The Waltham Iron Ore Tramway served the ironstone pits of the Waltham Iron Ore Company, a subsidiary of the Staveley Coal and Iron Company. It was located to the north of the village of Branston in Leicestershire. The tramway operated from 1884 until 1958.

Locomotive builders Corpet-Louvet might sound a bit obscure and small-time but the firm built the gorgeous SNCF 4-6-4 express loco 232.U 1 in 1949. (See www.flickr.com/photos/82097736@N00/51067825833/in/photost... next door.)

This is a photograph Key Route Ken sent me. There is no information other than the photo. We are looking at the Mt. Tamalpais and Muir Woods Railway Shay 7, its full train and two more trains behind it. I assume this was taken at Mill City, CA.

Here is the Wikipedia opening paragraph of the article on the railroad: The Mount Tamalpais & Muir Woods Railway was a scenic tourist railway operating between Mill Valley and the east peak of Mount Tamalpais in Marin County, California, covering a distance of 8.19 miles, with a 2.88-mile spur line to the Muir Woods. The railroad was incorporated in January 1896, and closed in the summer of 1930. Originally planned as a 4 ft 8 1⁄2 in standard gauge electric trolley line, the railroad was powered by a succession of geared steam locomotives. Billed as the "Crookedest Railroad in the World," the line was renowned for its steep and serpentine route, winding through picturesque terrain to a mountaintop tavern providing first-class hospitality and panoramic views of the San Francisco Bay Area. Despite its popularity, the railway met its demise following a fire in 1929, and dwindling ridership when the automobile could finally drive to Tamalpais' summit. (Wikipedia)

One of the crew of an 'SY' class 2-8-2 tops up a coupling rod oil pot whilst in the platform at Baiyin station.

Note the boiler blowdown valve (operated by the red-painted mechanism) behind the trailing coupled wheel, and firebox ashes on the lip of the damper below it - and what might be a lump of concrete arch from the firebox that I suspect is propping the damper open.

Working most weekends means that I have limited access to operational steam these days, so when the rare opportunity arises with a steam engine operating locally on a day when I'm actually off, Something would be amiss for me not to go and see

The "Jingpeng Orient Express", a luxury train chartered by Great Western Tours for a tour of the Jitong line, sits at the summit station of Shangdian while its passengers are out and about taking pictures. This train was originally used by the Politburo and other high officials for their official travel. Now the officials fly and the train is chartered out to tourists.

The Hornsby Chain-Track Tractor is the ancestor of all "caterpillars". After some petroleum-powered prototypes, in 1909 a steam-powered unit was sold for work in the Yukon Territories, where oil was scare but coal and water abundant. The steam engine (Boiler and machine aggregate) was delivered by William Foster, of Lincoln. The track system and steering was created by David Roberts at Hornsby Co.

The Roberts patent rights were sold to the Holt Co in early 1914, which was in 1925 absorbed into the Caterpillar Co.

Today, only the chain tracks of the Hornsby Steam Crawler have survived.

There is a breathtaking live steam model of this tractor at: www.youtube.com/watch?v=8hvzBofFfzA which helped me a lot in figuring out the right proportions.
