Another shot of 71000 "Duke Of Gloucester" during its lay-over at Keighley in the early hours of the 10th October 2004. I'd have liked a bit more light on the top of the boiler, but beggars can't be choosers and I'm glad I made the effort to take these photos. I wonder whether we'll ever see the Duke at Keighley again?
Not yet 18 and thus can't be a fireman for another six months or so, but he's old enough to be a cleaner and has boundless enthusiasm. When he's out with me get he gets to fire the loco under my watchful eye. He's getting quite good at it too. :-) Here he prepares the fire in readiness for departure from Princes Risborough.

1880's portable coal-fired steam engine built in Brantford Ontario, used for mining exploration on Michipicoten Island.
The Buckinghamshire Railway Centre is a 25 acre working Steam Museum with one of the UK's largest collections of locomotives, rolling stock and railway memorabilia. A re-created country station in the heyday of steam travel, offers steam train rides on certain days.
Sir Lamiel on a high speed TPO pass through Quorn. Not great positioning with large white post, but it's a popular spot and we were late.

The Hornsby Chain-Track Tractor is the ancestor of all "caterpillars". After some petroleum-powered prototypes, in 1909 a steam-powered unit was sold for work in the Yukon Territories, where oil was scare but coal and water abundant. The steam engine (Boiler and machine aggregate) was delivered by William Foster, of Lincoln. The track system and steering was created by David Roberts at Hornsby Co.
The Roberts patent rights were sold to the Holt Co in early 1914, which was in 1925 absorbed into the Caterpillar Co.
Today, only the chain tracks of the Hornsby Steam Crawler have survived.
There is a breathtaking live steam model of this tractor at: www.youtube.com/watch?v=8hvzBofFfzA which helped me a lot in figuring out the right proportions.
David has lit a warming fire in BR Standard '9F' no. 92214 and is poking around in the firebox to ensure the wood and the coal are optimally placed for efficient combustion.
Lighting a fire almost always results in a smoky cab. The acrid wood smoke meant that I grabbed a pic and made my escape into some fresh air.

Written on the back of this photo was only "Exposition 1939". That was a World's Fair held on San Francisco's Treasure Island in San Francisco Bay. Treasure Island is an artificial island and a neighborhood in the city and county of San Francisco. Built 1936–37 for the 1939 Golden Gate International Exposition, the island's World’s Fair site is a California Historical Landmark. The then newly completed Bay Bridge made the Exposition accessible to the City and the East Bay. (source Wikipedia)

'Mutual improvement classes' were a feature of steam locomotive sheds back in the day. Indepependent of the official railway management, they were set up and run by enginemen to maintain and improve the way engines were prepared and handled, problems dealt with, etc. The tradition has been maintained, more or less intact, at most UK heritage railways.
At the GCR the most recent class was on boiler gauge glasses, and in particular how to change one - in theory straightforward but potentially tricky when everything is very hot and there is maybe 150 psi or more pressure in the boiler.
Here Colin practices the glass-changing routine, overseen by Simon of the full-time shed staff, on LMS '8F' no. 48305 which was undergoing a boiler washout.

The harbourside in Bristol, the steam engine brings back memories of days gone by. The old warehouses of yesteryear now replaced by the new apartments blocks.
'Standard 5' no. 73156 forges south past Woodthorpe with 'diner' - actually a lunchtime train. The fence on the right doesn't normally see people hanging around waiting for trains, but 'Tornado' was out and about, and that loco is a big draw wherever it goes.
