In its hasty and ill-considered rush towards dieselisation in the 1960s British Railways sent thousands of our beloved steam engines, many with years of work left in them, to scrapyards up and down the country. At one of these yards on Barry Island in South Wales, the owner, Dai Woodham, cut up wagons instead of loco's, thus allowing the embryonic preservation movement time to get its act together. In what now seems a miracle some 200 of these engines were eventually saved and now work happily on preserved railways and main lines which is something we could never have imagined back in the day.

British Railways Class 5XP Jubilee 45690 "Leander" heads south at Arnside in very wet and dull conditions, working 1z87 1316 Carlisle - London Euston via the Cumbrian Coast, this was Leander's last mainline passenger turn before its present boiler certificate runs out ,photographed on 30/09/2023
My newest edition to the fleet. Eleven hundred horse powers rolling by! The G10’s where build between 1910 and 1924. They sport the boiler of a P8 combined with the slightly amended valve gear of a T16 steam engine. The G10 was intended for heavy goods train duties on main lines, but as a result of its low axle load (15.3 t) it could be employed more flexibly than its equally powerful cousin, the Prussian G 8.1. The G10 was occasionally even used in passenger train service. Over 2600 copies were build.
After the First World War the Deutsche Reichsbahn took the engines over from the KPEV (Prussian State Railway) and renumbered them to Baureihe 57. I’ve depicted the 57-1427 build in 1914 by August Borsig in Berlin which started it’s career as the Oppeln 5467.
My LEGO model is powered by one Power Functions ‘L’ motor situated in the boiler and a Buwizz battery and remote control in the tender. It’s suited for 104 curves and upward.
I'm very happy with the new tender design made possible by the new thin HA Bricks medium train wheels. For now they are black prototypes but looking forward to swap them with the end product soon! Connected to the sand box I've used whips, an idea I saw first done by MartijnvdL. Custom coupling rods by Bricks-on-Rails.
I’ve build a little landscape depicting a ‘Trafohauschen’ or power house/ transformer house for low voltage, a bit of forest and the engine crossing a peaty drainage ditch.
Let me know what you think, as always much appreciated!
This big steam engine just stopped for a while in Olten ..... so i share another memory with my flickr friends ..
my granddad was a proud steam locomotive engineer - wen i was a little boy - he told me often :
Ueli - when you grow older - you must
be a Lokomotivführer or a teacher !
So i kept a deep affection to the railroad
all those years - and was a teacher for about 40 years !
Fast Train
Well you've been on a fast train and it's going off the rails
And you can't come back can't come back together again
And you start breaking down
In the pouring rain
Well you've been on a fast train
When your lover has gone away don't it make you feet so sad
And you go on a journey way into the land
And you start breaking down
'Cos you're under the strain
And you jump on a fast train
You had to go on the lam you stepped into no-man's land
Ain't nobody here on your waveband
Ain't nobody gonna give you a helping hand
And you start breaking down
And just go into the sound
When you hear that fast train
And you keep moving on to the sound of the wheels
And deep inside your heart you really know oh, just how it feels
And you start breaking down and go into the pain
Keep on moving on a fast train
You're way over the line next thing you're out of your mind
And you're out of your depth in through the window she crept
Oh there's nowhere to go in the sleet and the snow
Just keep on moving on a fast train
You had to go on the lam stepping in no-man's land
Ain't nobody here on your waveband
Nobody even gonna lend you a helping hand
Oh and you're so alone can you really make it on your own
Keep on moving on a fast train
Oh going nowhere, except on a fast train
Oh trying to get away from the past
Oh keep on moving keep on moving on a fast train
Going nowhere across the desert sand through the barren waste
On a fast train going nowhere
On a fast train going nowhere

Riding the President's Car as NW J 611 passes she looks for her compartment. She will soon be ready for a ride back on time on the historic Strasburg Road in her private compartment but everything about her, the train, and the locomotive is pure vintage today.
We were married on this railroad and this day, hanging out together, with the locomotive that was my favorite as a child, was one to remember forever.

At Km 40 of the Ing. Jacobacci to Esquel narrow gauge line, north of Ojos de Agua (Rio Negro province), the cute little train affectionately called “La Trochita”, or “El Viejo Express Patagónico” (the Old Patagonian Express) strolls in a desolate desert landscape. It is not the usual dry sandy desert, there is a small river nearby, but it is a remote plateau with almost no inhabitants for miles around, and a land devoid of most activity apart from some scarce ruminant livestock attended by the famous gauchos.

Out for a bike ride into town today and manged to arrive just in time for one of Nene Valley Railways brilliant steam engines at Orton Mere. Pleased to see it smoking with a few suitably placed clouds in the background.
Taken in Elsecar, Yorkshire. My hubby had a steam engine 'footplate' driving experience and this was his instructor. Monochrome and a little extra grain to achieve a vintage feel.
