Shades of OWL - In a scene out of the 1950's, N&W 611 arrives into Barber Junction w/ a late night Powhatan Arrow.
I have never seen a smoother-running Accucraft Ruby. When you consider this one hasn't had the inside/outside admission swapped, it is mind-blowing. It also has the stock pistons. A lot of us upgraded to a larger bore piston.
My friend Mike spent a while fiddling with the eccentrics to nail the timing perfectly.

Last week Union Pacific ran their old number 14 steam engine through our area. Here it passes under the old coaling tower in Nelson,IL. Coaling towers were essential for steam trains, they provided the water and coal to keep them running....
Some neat old tractors from this show a couple of years ago. Now It's time to go to this year's show.

This big steam engine just stopped for a while in Olten ..... so i share another memory with my flickr friends ..
my granddad was a proud steam locomotive engineer - wen i was a little boy - he told me often :
Ueli - when you grow older - you must
be a LokomotivfĂĽhrer or a teacher !
So i kept a deep affection to the railroad
all those years - and was a teacher for about 40 years !

Soo Line 2-8-2 steamer #1003 tags along on the back of the "Plymouth mixed train", which has just made its way onto Canadian National rails at Mill. This would be my last good shot of 1003 until well after dark!

Buddy; that's the name of this 4.5" Scale Burrell Traction Engine built in the nineteen eighties by the late Alan Davis and driven by his grandson Paul at the 2023 Stoke Row Steam Rally.
BR Jubilee Class 4-6-0 No. 45596 "Bahamas" approaches Quorn and Woodhouse Station on the Great Central Railway bound for Leicester North.

With Mother Nature providing a stunning, pre-sunrise display of color overhead, a Denver & Rio Grande passenger extra charges west over Ferguson's Trestle at MP 285.87, destined for Durango, Colorado, via the Cumbres Pass route.
This 2021 re-creation of a late 19th Century passenger train features a full train-set that was recently restored by the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad. On the point is the 1883-vintage D&RG T-12 Locomotive #168, a 4-6-0 which was retired in 1938, and spent nearly 80 years as an outdoor display in Colorado Springs. The consist behind her includes RPO Car #65 as well as Coaches 256 and 292, all original D&RG equipment, all three of which date to the late 1800s, and all of which were restored from heavily deteriorated hulks.
This image is one of a series that I made during this 2021 photo shoot on the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad, organized by Lerro Photography. These images feature what has to be one of the most spectacular sunrises I have ever seen in a railroad setting or anywhere.
R2074. The town of Châteaulin on the River Aulne in Brittany, France once had two railway stations, Châteaulin-Ville (Châteaulin Town) and Châteaulin-Embranchement (Châteaulin Junction); they were situated on the much lamented metre gauge Réseau Breton system which closed down in 1967.
They were situated on opposite sides of the town and separated by the river so a low, curved viaduct was built across the river and the line climbed up through the town on the other side to reach the other station. Châteaulin-Ville Station was closed along with the railway although the station building still exists - but now in private hands.
Châteaulin-Embranchement Station is also still in existence, and still sees a regular train service. It was an interchange between standard and narrow gauge trains but now of course, the only trains that it sees are the standard gauge ones. The viaduct across the river is also still there, but the trackbed has been tarmaced over and it now carries road vehicles instead of rail vehicles.
This is a view of metre gauge trains at Châteaulin-Embranchement in happier days before the line was closed. Châteaulin was on the metre gauge line from Carhaix in central Brittany to the fishing port and seaside resort of Camaret-sur-Mer in the far west.
Trains from Carhaix terminated and started from this platform on one side of the station and trains for Camaret-sur-Mer started and finished from another platform on the other side of the station so through passengers had to change trains and walk across to the other platform.
The locomotive is an 0-6-6-0 Mallet tank engine and the diesel railcar is a Dion-Bouton type OC2 built in 1946, but to a pre-war design.
