Last week Union Pacific ran their old number 14 steam engine through our area. Here it passes under the old coaling tower in Nelson,IL. Coaling towers were essential for steam trains, they provided the water and coal to keep them running....

This big steam engine just stopped for a while in Olten ..... so i share another memory with my flickr friends ..
my granddad was a proud steam locomotive engineer - wen i was a little boy - he told me often :
Ueli - when you grow older - you must
be a Lokomotivführer or a teacher !
So i kept a deep affection to the railroad
all those years - and was a teacher for about 40 years !

LNER Thompson Class B1 61306 Mayflower approaches Warwick 22 August 2015.
London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) Thompson Class B1 No. 61306 is a preserved British steam locomotive. In preservation, it carries the number 1306 and the name Mayflower, complete with LNER Apple Green Livery, though this guise is entirely fictional.

I chatted with this family for ages, mainly about the state of the NHS. I’m not sure how we got onto the subject but I was so engrossed in the conversation that I forgot to ask their names! We did agree it was a perfect day for a picnic - green fields, blue skies, white fluffy clouds coupled with the sound of the steam engines and the smell of oil and exhaust fumes.
Soo Line 2-8-2 steamer #1003 tags along on the back of the "Plymouth mixed train", which has just made its way onto Canadian National rails at Mill. This would be my last good shot of 1003 until well after dark!

On April 3, 1993, the Norfolk Southern's steam excursion program was in full swing, and the Norfolk & Western #611 pulled an excursion train from Birmingham, Alabama to Chattanooga, Tennessee, and returned to Birmingham later that afternoon. This photo was taken near the Chattanooga Choo Choo depot, the Chattanooga destination for the excursion. The 611 was waiting for the return trip to Birmingham, and many of the passengers were milling about admiring this beautiful locomotive.

Running light in the yard at Cass, WV, the former Mower Lumber Co. Shay #4 heads toward the shop complex as she works to assemble a log train for a November 2025 photo shoot at the Cass Scenic Railroad State Park. The Shays at Cass virtually never disappoint photographers with their inkly black smoke plumes and waterfalls of steam from their three vertically mounted cylinders.
