The State Historical Society of Iowa puts Portland's stodgy Oregon Historical Society, with its brutalist architecture, baffling floor plan and limited public exhibits, to shame.
Iowa's impressive building has lovely galleries and public spaces. We enjoyed the current exhibit about Iowa during the Civil War.
Alas, the State Historical Society of Iowa is one of the very few things downtown Des Moines has going for it.

While out looking for sandhill cranes near Kearney, NE, starc283 and I came across this cute little meadowlark sitting on a fence. It's probably going to be the best shot of the trip.

The impressive State Historical Museum, founded in 1872 and located between the Red Square and the Manege Square in Moscow. It's here seen from the north end of the Red Square.
This is a museum of Russian history with exhibitions ranging from relics of the prehistoric tribes inhabiting present-day Russia, through priceless artworks acquired by members of the Romanov dynasty. The museum has several million objects in its collection.
The Texas State Capitol, anchoring 22-acres of landscaped grounds originally designated as Capitol Square in 1839, was designed in 1881 by architect Elijah E. Myers, and was constructed from 1882 to 1888 under the direction of civil engineer Reuben Lindsay Walker. Build in Italian Renaissance Revival style.
The Texas Capitol, built in 1888, is sited on one of Austin's highest point covering approximately 22 acres of landscaped lawns dotted by 17 monument. The grounds anchor the northern periphery of the downtown commercial district and the southern periphery of the University of Texas at Austin campus. A 1995-96 renovation of the historic Grounds returned the park-like setting to its 1888-1915 appearance.
First State Bank at the corner of Locust & Hickory, ca 1977. This was probably shot existing light, with Kodak Tri-X film (ASA 400). I imagine that the camera lens was wide open (f2 at a 1/30 of a second--but that's a guess). UPDATE: This was originally the site of the old Exchange National Bank that was ruined by a run in the 1920's. The First State Bank later bought the building, and then built this one in two stages. It is now the site of Wells Fargo.

The granite peaks and rolling plains are calling. The clear mountain waters are inviting and the open ranges are waiting to be discovered. Bring your family to Custer State Park and let yourself run wild.
Encompassing 71,000 acres in the Black Hills, Custer State Park is home to abundant wildlife and adventure; camping, hiking, biking, swimming, fishing, or relaxing, there’s something here for everyone.
Feeding and disturbing park wildlife is against park regulations. While the animals within the park are used to visitors and vehicles, they are still wild animals. Please remain in your vehicle or stay at least 100 yards from bison, elk, and other animals.
Pets must be on a leash no longer than 10 feet and are not allowed in any park buildings or on designated swim beaches. Please clean up after your pet and do not leave it unattended. Service animals are welcome.
Firearms must be unloaded and cased unless during a hunting season with the proper license. Concealed carry is allowed with the appropriate permit.

The Mount Coolidge Lookout and Fire Tower was one of the last projects completed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the late 1930s. Built of local stone, the tower rests atop a 6,023-foot peak and is still used today as a fire lookout and dispatch center. As the highest point in central Custer State Park, it offers breathtaking 360-degree views from the top of the fire tower. On a clear day, you can see the Badlands nearly 60 miles away in the east.
You can find Mount Coolidge 3 miles south of 16A on your way to Blue Bell Lodge. The turnoff is located on SD 87 as Wildlife Loop turns back to the Peter Norbeck Scenic Byway.

The State Theater in Ithaca, NY. From the outside it looks like a very old and sketchy movie theater. The mixture of styles inside is bizarre enough to be beautiful. Some of the best concerts I ever went to happened here.
