Masculinity and femininity can be considered as the primary elements that formed the world. Most philosophies have the idea of masculinity and femininity to explain the phenomena around the world. For example, in Taoism, the world is built based on the interaction between Yin (femininity) and Yang (masculinity). The balance of masculinity and femininity results in the harmony of the nature. As a subject of understanding the world through visual experience, there is no doubt that photography should involve in the interpretation of masculinity and femininity.

The understanding and presentation of masculinity and femininity varies from people to people. For example, some photographer prefers to show the notion of masculinity and femininity through presenting gender roles, such as Cindy Sherman. Others, such as Raymond Gehman, might prefer to add more interpretation on the idea of masculinity and femininity which is not limited on gender. I, personally, do not limit the understanding of masculinity and femininity just on gender. There are more interpretations of these concepts beyond gender basics. Masculinity conveys feelings of strength and calmness. Femininity conveys feelings of warmness and beauty. Color plays an important role in classifying masculinity and femininity as far as I am concerned. Warm temperature colors always have more feminine elements to the photographs than the cool temperature colors. Although the objects themselves can speak about characteristics of masculinity and femininity to the audience, the color choices of the photos also add more to the picture. For example, over the ten photos I shot for masculinity and femininity, there are conventional objects for the topic such as the nail polish and cigarettes. The make-ups and cigarettes are traditional representation of different genders. It is easy for audience to identify the characteristics of masculinity and femininity within the photos. However, there are also pictures that I chose to make a difference based on using different colors. For instance, there is one photo I shot about a pair of female shoes; however I decided to use a cool temperature color as the primary color for the photo which adds more coldness to the picture, and I, personally, believe that there is more masculinity going on in the picture.

As the primary elements in the universe, every object is made of the combination of masculinity and femininity. Gender is not the only way to identify these two concepts. By interpreting the emotions and feelings behind these two terms, photographer can give more meanings to their photos and create different ways to view the world.

GRAND OPENING World Press Photo, Willy-Brandt-Haus, Berlin 2015

The Freundeskreis Willy-Brandt-Haus e.V., Gruner+Jahr and the magazines Stern and Geo present the photo exhibition.

A clear statement against the persecution of homosexuals in Russia has been voted the world's best press photo of the year. The jury of the World Press Photo competition awarded the prestigious prize to Danish photographer Mads Nissen. He photographed the gay couple Jon and Alex in an intimate moment in Saint Petersburg. The photo is part of a larger project by the photographer on the subject of “Homophobia in Russia”.

The jury justified its choice by stating that the photo impressively addresses a universal topic. Life in Russia is becoming increasingly difficult for homosexuals, lesbians, bisexuals and transgender people. “Sexual minorities face legal and social discrimination, persecution and even violent hate crimes from conservative religious and nationalist groups,” the jury's report states.

“This photograph has great aesthetic power and shows humanity,” said jury chair Michele McNally, director of photography at The New York Times. “Violent images today are produced by terrorists for propaganda purposes. Our response to this must be more subtle,” said jury member Alessia Glaviano.

The jury selected the winners from around 98,000 photos from 131 countries. Prizes were awarded to 42 photographers in eight categories. The winning photos will be shown in an exhibition in Amsterdam from April and then in over 40 countries. They will be exhibited at the Willy Brandt House in Berlin from June 5 to 28.

Many organizations publish mission statements. It's an attempt to articulate a reason for being. A mission statement helps each and every team member to stay on task. It helps to prevent efforts from getting so diversified that the organization's purpose is forgotten.

As part of my training, I was taught to create a personal mission statement. I've never posted it anywhere, or committed it to memory, so I cannot type it here. Perhaps I should find it, after all these years, and see if I still identify with it.

I do recall that part of the process of creating the statement involved attention to the verbs. This school's mission has only one verb: prepare! They exist to prepare.

If you were to prepare a personal mission statement -- what you're all about, what verbs would you use?

Numerous trips to Italy over the past decade fostered an interest in shrines, icons, and tabernacles found throughout Florence and Rome. This fascination coupled with the realization that the natural landscape had become essentially obliterated by stonework in the magnificent buildings and pavements of the Renaissance led to an examination of the layers of history, culture, and religion. My own reverence of nature and concern with environmental issues sparked a desire to build shrines venerating natural elements from the area and referencing pagan religious beliefs upon which Christianity is based. The resulting small sculptures employ detritus of nature as objects of veneration much as a bone fragment of a saint is revered in religious traditions. The sculptures were installed in found niches within the historic cities. This exhibition showcases the photo documentation of these installation sculptures printed on and embedded in handmade paper.

Nationally known fiber artist, Char Norman presents a suite of photo documentation on handmade paper of installation sculpture referencing layers of history in the development and relationship to nature of Italian civilization and religious history.

This work resulting from years of travel and observation of culture in Italy sets up a dialog between opposing forces of nature and human development as well as man’s need throughout history to worship relics as idolized symbols of beliefs.

From my nighttime expedition to the Turk St. hoard for long exposure images (for my fellow amateur photographers who like cars, I've discovered that the best images are nighttime ones with timed exposures--try it). Since my first trip here two weeks ago, I've learned that the owner is a gentleman called Nick who evidently works as a cab driver, and who owns at least 15 cars. One of these days I hope to meet him. I went out of my way to be conspicuous while shooting these, but no one came to the window.

As to what we have here, in the foreground is the beautiful 58 Buick Century, now parked on the street with its 'Deluxe Fashionaire' grill visible for all to see (even though this is one of my dream cars, I wouldn't want the job of having to keep all of those little squares polished), and in the background, along with appropriate period architecture, a fellow 1958 GM offering: the Oldsmobile 88.

Climate Action Moreland organised a little protest outside our Federal MP's office in Coburg about the Adani Carmichael coal mine. Our Labor MP Peter Khalil has signed the climate emergency declaration, we are asking him to publicly oppose the Adani mine and argue for this position in the Federal Labor caucus. Development of the Adani mine is inconsistent with Australia signing the Paris Agreement and the emissions reduction targets that entails.
