HOUSTON –BSEE’s Mike Conner will be honored by the Offshore Technology Conference Awards Committee with the Heritage Award May 2, in recognition of his outstanding, significant and unique achievements and extensive contributions to the offshore oil and gas industry, specifically his balanced and logical approach to deepwater and subsea technology. Each year, the OTC Awards Committee recognizes major technological, humanitarian, environmental, and leadership contributions to the industry. The Heritage Award will be presented to Conner during an awards luncheon May 2, 12:00-2:00 CST at NRG Center.
“When I think of someone who epitomizes BSEE’s philosophy of ensuring the safety of offshore oil and gas operations, I think of Mike Conner,” said Lars Herbst, BSEE’s Gulf of Mexico Region director. “From an idea’s inception to its final design and usage, he engages industry with consistent, analytical and thorough feedback.”
His achievement is demonstrated through his leadership and partnership with industry centered on the common goals of safety and environmental protection and his approach to regulating firsts in deepwater and subsea technology with reasonable and repeatable processes.
Conner has accumulated an immense catalog of direct impact on approval of deepwater projects in the Gulf of Mexico. Throughout his career, he has had a major contribution to more than 300 - Deepwater Projects and Deepwater Operations Plans (DWOPs) for 33New Deepwater Production Facilities.
Conner has been with the bureau 25 years, starting his federal career as a Pipeline Engineer in 1992. He was appointed Section Chief of the Technical Assessment and Operations Support Section, Field Operations, Gulf of Mexico Region on January 15, 2005.
Prior to beginning his work in the petroleum industry, Conner served in the U.S. Army and achieved the rank of First Lieutenant as an Infantry Platoon Leader in Viet Nam. He has worked in the petroleum industry since 1970 serving in various positions such as Production Engineer, manager of various research projects, and owner and president of a small land based drilling company. Conner holds a Bachelor of Science degree Petroleum Engineering from Louisiana State University.

Most Japanese weddings take place at Shinto Shrines. One the wedding day the bride is painted from head to toe in white as a statement of her maidenhood. The bride wears a white kimono and elaborate headpiece to hide her "horns of jealousy:" from the groom’s mother, who becomes the head of her family. A Japanese groom dresses in a black kimono. While the bride and groom exchange vows the two families face each other and not the bride and groom. One of the central moment of the Japanese wedding ceremony is when the bride and groom drink nine cups of sake, after which they are officially declared man and wife. The families also drink sake to symbolize the joining of the two families. At the end of the ceremony the father of the groom and the bride introduce their family members.
At the wedding reception the bride changes into a red kimono, and at some wedding a Western style white wedding dress. The wedding guest play games, skits, and sometimes karaoke at the wedding reception. Guest are expected to offer the couple "goshugi"(money). Most Japanese weddings take place in the Spring or Fall, because of the good weather. Some days are consider luckier to get married on than other. Despite my privacy and permission being set, from day one of being active on Flickr, so that only I can download and print my images and not allowing 3rd party sharing, etc, it still can (and will) happen from what I can tell.
The insult added to this injury is the fact that this person actually contacted me enquiring about buying a print of this image. I'm participating in a public forum for myriad reasons, but having my pictures misappropriated is not one of them. Not impressed!
Singapore Ministry of Foreign Affairs Press Statement: State Visit of President of the Republic of Indonesia Dr Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, 2 to 4 September 2014
President of the Republic of Indonesia, Dr Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, will make a State Visit to Singapore from 2 to 4 September 2014 at the invitation of President Tony Tan Keng Yam. President Yudhoyono will be accompanied by his wife Ibu Ani Bambang Yudhoyono, and a high-level delegation.
There will be an official Welcome Ceremony in honour of President Yudhoyono at the Istana on 3 September. Following that, President Yudhoyono will have separate meetings with President Tan and Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. Prime Minister Lee will host President Yudhoyono and his delegation to lunch, while President Tan and Mrs Tan will host a State Banquet in honour of President Yudhoyono and Ibu Ani the same day. Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong will call on President Yudhoyono on 4 September 2014.
During the visit, President Tan will confer the Order of Temasek (First Class) on President Yudhoyono in a ceremony at the Istana. The Order of Temasek (First Class) is Singapore’s highest honour for foreign leaders. It is being conferred on President Yudhoyono for his positive contributions to the relationship between Singapore and Indonesia during his ten years in office.
President Yudhoyono and Prime Minister Lee will also witness the signing of the Treaty between the Republic of Indonesia and the Republic of Singapore relating to the Delimitation of the Territorial Seas of the Two Countries in the Eastern Part of the Strait of Singapore on 3 September 2014.
President Yudhoyono last made a State Visit to Singapore in 2005.

Significance: The conservation area consists of a number of important public buildings and a street of relatively intact humble shopfronts and kerbline verandahs, visually punctuated by opposing bank facades. Containing a range of late nineteenth century and early twentieth century structures, the conservation area strongly evokes a sense of the town's past (Criterion E.1).
Description: Koroit is located some miles to the north of the main coastal road, the Princes Highway, and is approximately midway between Warrnambool and Port Fairy. It lies on the northern slopes of the volcanic Tower Hill, enjoying the benefits of rich soil and shelter from the weather from the Southern Ocean. The qualities of the soil have long made the district suitable to intensive cultivation, producing abundant crops of potatoes, onions and peas, usually in association with diary cattle, pigs and fat lambs. The area also once produced mustard, linseed, wheat and oats. The township of Koroit developed to serve the needs of the district. The close settlement and small holdings allowed Koroit to grow into a larger town than would normally be expected within a short distance (17km) from the regional centre, Warrnambool, and from Port Fairy which is 20km distant. The predominant green of year round cultivation and the scale of the district's holdings and buildings have led many observers to see a similarity with Irish landscapes. Commercial Road, the main street of Koroit, is a flat, straight stretch of road. This is the commercial and administrative centre of Koroit and contains a number of interesting late nineteenth and early twentieth century shops, dwellings and public buildings. The focal point of the commercial/administrative precinct is the group of public buildings near the intersection of Boundary/Commercial Road and High Street. Included are the municipal offices and the bluestone post office. The latter was built in 1872 and is of special significance through its link with author Henry Handel (Ethel) Richardson whose mother was postmistress here in 1878; Ethel's father died in Koroit in 1879 and the author used the town for the setting of the third novel in her trilogy, The Fortunes of Richard Mahony. Also included within this precinct are the courthouse (1871-72), and the state school (1878). Also of note at the intersection is the decorative Koroit Hotel with detailing showing Art Nouveau influence (especially in the verandah). Diagonally opposite is the Courthouse Inn, an interesting Edwardian weatherboard building now unlicensed but still used for accommodation. The Commercial Road shopping area runs west from this intersection, consisting primarily of single storey shops although the State Savings Bank and, directly opposite, the National Bank are exceptions. The National Bank in its present form dates from c 1872 when architect George Jobbins was commissioned to remodel the facade and to erect an additional storey. Jobbins was also commissioned to design the premises of the Colonial Bank of Australasia (now the State Savings Bank) in 1876. The design of this bank closely relates to the National Bank in Warrnambool (1868-69) designed by Lloyd Tayler, Jobbins' former employer. Though there are a number of later intrusions in the Commercial Road area, some of them unfortunate, the prevailing kerbline verandah posts and valances are still sufficient to evoke a strong sense of the town's past. This is emphasised by the town's relative isolation, being by passed by all the major district highways.

Description of Historic Place
The Palace Cigar Store is a two-storey, brick commercial building located on the west side of Government Street within Victoria’s Old Town. The building features a prominent arcade of three round-headed windows, each springing from a pair of columns, across the upper storey. The ground floor has a retail storefront with a central recessed entrance.
Heritage Value
The Palace Cigar Store is symbolic of the development of Victoria’s Old Town during the city’s early twentieth century economic renewal. At the time, there was increasing demand for retail space downtown, which resulted in construction activity along Government Street as the main shopping district. This building was an investment property for Heinrich Siebenbaum (1859-1942) who was born in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, and arrived in Canada in 1893. By 1899, he was the operator of the Palace Saloon in the adjacent Adelphi Building at the corner of Government and Yates Streets. 1306 Government Street was opened as the Palace Cigar Store, with offices above. Siebenbaum’s business was destroyed in 1915 in local attacks on German commercial properties after the sinking of the Lusitania in World War One.
The Palace Cigar Store is additionally significant as an example of the transition from the Late Victorian era to the Edwardian era at a time when architectural styles, as well as building technologies, were changing. It typifies the late persistence of the Romanesque Revival style, as shown in the round-arched window openings on the upper floor. The ground floor was originally a single arched opening, further emphasizing a Romanesque character, but was later modernized to a rectangular storefront in line with changing commercial tastes.

Character-Defining Elements
Key elements that define the heritage character of the Palace Cigar Store include its:
- location on Government Street, part of a grouping of late-nineteenth and early-twentieth century historic masonry buildings in Victoria's Old Town
- continuous commercial use
- siting on the front and side property lines, with no setback
- commercial form, scale and massing, as expressed by its two-storey height, symmetrical rectangular plan and flat roof
- masonry construction, including pressed brick façade, common brick side and rear walls, and stone cornice
- Romanesque Revival style details, such as round-arched window heads, coupled columns with foliate cushion capitals, simply articulated archivolts, and corbelled brickwork
- fenestration, such as one-over-one double-hung wooden-sash windows with fixed semicircular transoms
- early storefront with central entry and plate glass display windows

It was the brainchild of WSSU alumni and former WSSU employee Brian Murrill, whose mother Patsy Murrill is living with multiple sclerosis. She was diagnosed in 1995. She is a teacher at North Hills Elementary School.
"It's been a challenging yet rewarding experience seeing this program come together. I originally came up with this concept in January of 2013 to honor my mother. My original goal was to create a program that would directly address the physical and emotional needs of people living with MS,” said Brian. He said since then his organization has developed key partnerships with the Gateway YWCA, National MS Society, and the WSSU Department of Physical Therapy.
Here is his view of the future for the program. “Today we have three main objectives: the first one is to provide the MS community with a free fitness and wellness program that is designed to improve the quality of life of our participants and their families. The second one is to take the results from our program and share them with physicians to better understand the role fitness and wellness plays in managing MS. The last one is to create an opportunity for graduate level PT students to get hands on experience working with our participants. MS is the most common disabling neurological disease of young adults in the U.S. It is our hope to grow this program and improve the overall quality of life of as many participants as we can. When you support MSfit, you are empowering people to move beyond their MS by giving them the knowledge, skills, tools and confidence to adopt healthy lifestyle behaviors, actively co-manage their disease and live their best lives through health and wellness," Brian said.
The MSFit clinic is a free clinic where screenings occur for multiple sclerosis patients, along with development of an exercise program, and education on the exercise protocol for the clients at the YWCA.
MSfit officially opened its doors to participants January 26th at the Gateway YWCA, in Winston-Salem, NC, from 1-5 p.m. Since MSfit announced the launch of the program in October, it has received an overwhelming response from potential participants.
Prior to beginning the program, participants are required to complete an initial fitness screening that will gauge their level of ability. The screenings were conducted by the Winston-Salem State University Department of Physical Therapy (PT).
Dr. Sara Migliarese, a physical therapy professor at WSSU, said, “The WSSU Department of Physical Therapy is excited about the partnership with MSfit. Our third-year students performed the fitness screenings and developed exercise programs for the clients with MS based on their abilities.”
“Under the supervision of DPT faculty, the students will educate each client on safe and effective exercise using the YWCA facilities, classes, and equipment. This service-learning opportunity will benefit the students, as well as the clients, and the WSSU PT Club is already involved in early fundraising activities to help support the MSfit Foundation and cover the cost of the YWCA memberships for the MS clients. WSSU is committed to the success and sustainability of this community service,” Migliarese continued.
As a part of their coursework, the WSSU Department of PT will return to the Gateway YWCA once a month to reevaluate participants and document their successes.
