Shame this place no longer exists. We tried to go back this year and were caught by site security before we even crossed the road to go near the asylum. Here's a shot from last year. We stayed in the single room shooting for around 30 minutes and started getting cocky. We carried on searching the hospital, avoiding security. We then went through a door and were literally left facing a security guard, we went to run but decided to hand ourselves in for the easy exit, after all fake names don't mean much.

It’s all about Me
By looking attentively at old and smeared walls, or stones and veined marble of various colours, you may fancy that you see in them several compositions, landscapes, battles, figures in quick motion, strange countenances ... ~Leonardo da Vinci
The use of symmetrical inkblots is often associated with, and was used in, psychiatric analysis (Rorsarch being one of many to use this technique).
I have combined the above ideas in an exercise of self examination and what this might mean regarding my ‘self’ or ‘inner psyche' within the world space I occupy.
I have discovered representations of my place in the cosmos, myself at the crossroads of a decision, places where I am part of the ‘big picture’, places where I am simply in transition from one state of mind to another. In some I am meditative. Faces, animal and human, are to be found within the symmetries.
I have included two instances of the same photograph, they represent the 'Yin and Yang', light and dark of life that here I have shown to be existing symbiotically within the original photograph.
These and many other aspects of what I consider makes up ‘me’ are to be found within the images I have produced.
The hood and mask are metaphors of times in my life when I have tended to be 'a little backward at coming forward', shy. Reticent to push myself to the front, all the while believing that I could contribute more.
All of the imagery is processed by me and derived from photographs taken by me.

What is significant?
The Byaduk Swimming Pool, located on the Penshurst-Byaduk Road is a concrete swimming pool constructed by a committee of local people in the 1930s. It was the first swimming pool ever constructed in the Shire of Southern Grampians, and at the time was considered to be quite an engineering feat. The creek nearby was diverted and dammed and used to fill and clean the pool be moving through it, and the whole structure was dug by hand. People came from long distances, and sometimes from larger towns such as Hamilton to use the pool. The Pool is no longer used, but provided a focus for entertainment to the children and families of the district every Summer for over 50 years. The Byaduk Swimming Pool complex consists of an inground concrete swimming pool with timber diving board, separate male and female changing rooms, an covered seating area, and a kiosk. No architect, engineer or specific builder was used in the construction of the structure. The pool is remarkably intact, despite being overgrown and weed infested.

The Byaduk Swimming Pool complex is of architectural, historical and social significance to the Southern Grampians Shire.
Why is it significant?
The Byaduk Swimming Pool complex is architecturally significant as a rare intact example of a rural swimming pool complex designed the early 1930s. It is of further architectural significance as an excellent example of a hand dug swimming pool, and for its use of engineering intelligence, which diverted the local creek through the strucutre to both fill and clean it. The pool is of historical significance as an example of a small community co-operating to build a substantial structure for the benefit of all in the community. Of further historical significance is the pool's representation of the social movement toward health and wellbeing, popular in the late 1920s and early 1930s. It is socially significant as an important meeting place for the Byaduk community for over fifty years.
Biography & Artist Statement:
Jeff Weston is a photographic artist and educator living in the Bay Area. He holds a BA in Art from San Francisco State University. He has been teaching at the college level since 1988, and currently teaches at The Academy of Art University and City College of San Francisco. He has also taught at College of Marin and UC Extension, Berkeley. He teaches and has taught many classes in both film and digital, including Color and Light, Color Theory, Color Printing, Contemporary Landscape, Landscape as Architecture, Landscape as Fine Art, Natural Light, Beginning Photography, Lightroom, Night Photography, and many others. He retired from wedding photography in 2002 to concentrate his energies on architectural landscape photography and teaching. He loves them both. His color landscape work explores ideas of identity and vacancy, and often uses subjective color. He has been exhibited in many solo and group exhibitions throughout the Bay Area.
The photographs submitted are from a series entitled “Nobody’s Home”. I am interested in the idea of vacancy. None of these homes are vacant; I have photographed them when the owners are away. But they have the feeling of vacancy, the feeling that the owners have left for good, at a moments notice, for some unknown yet very important reason. My interest is in how this vacancy can still carry a sense of presence of the owners, a presence that lingers on in their absence.
CCSF Photography and You:
I started teaching in the Photography Department at City College of San Francisco in 1988. I am still teaching at City College. During that span of time, I have been privileged to have taught so many absolutely wonderful students, many whom have become dear, good and beloved friends. I cannot estimate how deeply my life has been enriched by this experience; it has been a profoundly beautiful way to add meaning and purpose to many lives, and, of course, to mine as well. It has been said that to be a teacher, one has to be teachable, and I have learned so much, about so many things, from my students. In turn, and with gratitude, I genuinely hope that I am bringing out the best in my students, inspiring them to pursue their dreams in their own authentic way.
Artist statement: “Buru Quartet” is a tribute to the Indonesian author Pramoedya Ananta Toer (1925–2006), who spent much of his productive writing years in prison because of his “subversive” belief in the rights of the downtrodden. In 1965, Pramoedya was arrested and beaten to the point of losing most of his hearing. All of his books in his house were burned on the spot. He was then sent to Buru Island for 14 years as a political prisoner, although no charges were ever brought against him. He was not allowed pen and paper for eight of the 14 years he was imprisoned. Despite everything, he managed to create a four-volume novel called The Buru Quartet. Fearful that his story would never be published, he recited it to fellow prisoners every night. It was only toward the end of his incarceration that he was provided with a typewriter and paper to write his books. Pramoedya was one of the last prisoners freed from Buru in 1979, but he was held under house arrest in Jakarta until 1992. He passed away on April 30, 2006, at age 81.
Out of necessity, Pramoedya told his story in the old oral storytelling tradition, but storytelling also accompanies the wayang kulit (shadow puppet) plays in Indonesia. I wanted to recreate the shadow puppet feeling in my book. Snippets of the Bahasa language, taken from Pramoedya’s essay on Indonesia, are incorporated with the images. On the reverse side are quotations in English from The Mute’s Soliloquy and This Earth of Mankind, two of his best-known books.
