Artist Statement
“We are living in an artificially induced state of consciousness that resembles sleep. The poor and the underclass are growing. Racial justice and human rights are nonexistent.
They influence our decisions without us knowing it. They numb our senses without us feeling it. They control our lives without us realizing it.
They have created a repressive society and we are their unwitting accomplices ...their intention to rule rests with the annihilation of consciousness.
We have been lulled into a trance.
They have made us indifferent, to ourselves, to others; we are focused only on our own gain. They are safe as long as they are not discovered ...that is their primary method of survival.
Keep us asleep, keep us selfish, keep us sedated...they are dismantling the sleeping middle class.
More and more people are becoming poor. We are their cattle. We are being bred for slavery.”

This photographic body of work is inspired by John Carpenter’s 1988 film, “They Live.” The movie was also credited by Shepard Fairey “as a major source of inspiration for his own subversive brand of street art.” They Live was the basis for his use of the word ‘OBEY’ that became his main campaign and a popular clothing brand consequently.
The protagonist of the movie, an unemployed drifter named "Nada," accidentally comes across a box of sunglasses. After putting a pair on, he realizes that they are quite special. He sees the world in black and white and discovers that it's not what it seems. The series of images I have created are like those unique sunglasses that Nada stumbled upon, aim to show the world to the viewer for what it truly is. I hope they will help people to take into consideration what they sacrifice by blindly following self-serving governments and corporations’ agendas.
Through this photographic project my intent is to encourage people to be more aware of the habitual ways of living that we have been thoughtlessly following for most of human history. It seems as though the human race would have learned by now to not put their trust in the hands of the misguiding ruling class. Unfortunately most of the humanity is still in the state of mindless consumerism and simply does not realize that their decisions, their entire lives are being manipulated.

Press Statement by Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Singapore: State Visit of the Governor-General of New Zealand Lieutenant General The Right Honourable Sir Jerry Mateparae and Lady Janine Mateparae, 6 to 8 July 2015
The Governor-General of New Zealand, Lieutenant General The Right Honourable Sir Jerry Mateparae will make a State Visit to Singapore from 6 to 8 July 2015 at the invitation of President Tony Tan Keng Yam. Governor-General Mataparae will be accompanied by his wife Lady Janine Mateparae and officials from the New Zealand Government House and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
An official welcome ceremony will be held for Governor-General Mateparae on 7 July, following which he will have separate meetings with President Tan and Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. President Tan and Mrs Tan will host a State Banquet in honour of Governor-General Mateparae and Lady Janine that evening.
During the course of Governor-General Mateparae’s visit to Singapore, he will be accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean on a tour of the Treelodge@Punggol, HDB’s first Eco-Precinct. Deputy Prime Minister Teo will host Governor-General Mateparae to lunch after the tour. Minister for Defence Dr Ng Eng Hen will also host Governor-General Mateparae to lunch to reaffirm the close and long-standing defence ties between Singapore and New Zealand. Governor-General Mateparae will be accompanied by Minister for Health Gan Kim Yong to the KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital (KKH) to view ongoing collaboration between Singapore and New Zealand at the Neurodevelopment Research Centre under A*STAR’s Singapore Institute for Clinical Sciences.
Governor-General Mateparae and Lady Janine will attend an orchid-naming and tree-planting ceremony at the Singapore Botanic Gardens on 7 July.
Governor-General Mateparae’s visit underscores the excellent ties between Singapore and New Zealand as both countries commemorate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations this year. There is close cooperation in the fields of trade and investment, defence, and the people-to-people sectors.

Today ?uestlove of The Roots announced the formal re-launch of his label Okayplayer Records after an 8-year hiatus. The digital-only label’s first releases are by Atlanta-based rapper and producer Danny! and recording engineer Young Guru
Danny!’s “Payback” is slated to drop on Sept. 25 and an instrumental album of breakbeats from Young Guru entitled “Essentials Vol 1” is due out Oct. 9th.
Okayplayer was founded in 1999 by ?uestlove with the goal of creating a forum for like-minded artists to communicate directly with fans. The venture has since worked with such artists as Common, Erykah Badu, D’Angelo, Yasiin Bey ( Mos Def) and Jill Scott. The project has grown to include Okayplayer TV, an online store, a live production arm (that produces the annual Roots Picnic amongst other shows) and the launch of four sister sites, including Okayafrica.com.
The last Okayplayer Records release was a 2004 compilation album entitled “True Notes Vol 1.”
“I’ve been waiting years for the right moment to re-launch the label,” said ?uestlove in a statement, “and I’m eager to kick things off with Danny!.”
Daniel Petruzzi, Okayplayer’s President, added that Danny!’s new album “provides another avenue for our brand to further establish what we stand for….Not only does Danny!’s sound and lyrical content match our aesthetic, but his DIY approach to production, promotion, artwork, and branding make him an ideal candidate to partner with.”
Danny! Swain, has released projects via Def Jux and Interscope and has been working with Okayplayer since 2006. His upcoming release, “Payback,” features guest artists El-P, Blu, Phonte, Jim Jones, Tanya Morgan, Lil B, DJ Kay Slay, Rhymefest, Swizz Beatz and more
“My angst with the record industry has long been documented but it hasn’t jaded my outlook,” Swain said in a statement. I’m fortunate to finally have a team behind me that clearly believes in my vision.”
Over the past decade, Gimel Keaton, a.k.a. Young Guru (sometimes referred to as “The Sound of New York”), has worked in sound engineering, production, and A&R for Roc-A-Fella Records and Def Jam Recordings. He has also mixed ten of Jay-Z’s 11 albums. “Young Guru: Essentials Vol 1” is his debut as a solo artist with a collection of all original breakbeats produced and recorded entirely by Keaton.
“Essentials Vol 1” will be the first of three album releases in this series, presented by Okayplayer Records.
I’m excited for what the future holds for Okayplayer Records,” ?uestlove noted, “and look forward to releasing more great projects over the next few years.

Though I was approaching with sadness at the loss of the Occupy camps I saw two men carrying very big black & white flags through the sidewalks between the two parks.
I was very happy to see them and hope more will do the same.
Another message from the artist James De La Vega, written on the sidewalk. This one is a bit more difficult to see in the photo. It reads, "Slavery has yet to perish -De La Vega" - it's a message I haven't seen from him before, and it's uncharacteristically grim. Many of his more recent messages have seemed that way.
I came upon this one when it was fresh. I had walked down this way a few hours earlier, and it had been devoid of messages. Setting up this shot had the usual challenges of framing, but I also wanted to incorporate something that would give a feel for the city environment that the message was in. I was pleased with a few that included joggers and bikers near the message, but then I saw a dog walker who had just gone to a water fountain with his dog. (At this particular fountain, there was an additional fountain near the bottom for the dog to drink from and splash in.) They began to walk in the direction of the message, and the rest was a matter of timing.
While I do not intend for this to be a statement equating pets with slavery, it seemed rather fitting to have this unenthusiastic-looking dog getting tugged along on a leash, stepping over the chalk words.
This is Dennis and Robin. I asked them for a portrait when I met them in Handen yesterday, only to realise that I had already met and photographed Dennis before. So here are a few facts about his friend Robin.He is originally from Malmö. These days Robin lives at Spånga. He works a a bartender here and there. On his free time he plays soccer (wing back), in a korp league team called Last Minute United.

Artist Statement
In today's commercialized, mechanized, specialized, computerized homogenized, society, the act of producing handmade pottery is one of social commentary. Mass produced commercial dinnerware and kitchenware are economical and readily available to fulfill our daily functional needs. In this light, creating individual ceramic vessels by hand is inefficient and even archaic. Indeed, any business person will tell you that there are easier ways to make a living.
The creation of handmade pottery resists the ceaseless homogenization of our society. There are very few objects in contemporary society that are produced by a single person beginning with their own design and taking raw materials through an entire process resulting in a final product. This kind of act of creation resonates powerfully in our collective history and psyche, but is becoming less and less common in today's world.
As such, the creation of unique handmade pottery questions the direction our society is moving. It asks questions about what our society is leaving behind as we hastily press relentlessly towards "progress". What are we losing when we consume industrial goods? What are we losing when fewer and fewer of us have the capacity to create a finished product from raw, materials? What are we losing when regional styles and differences vanish? And are we even aware of such loses?
Issues of individualism, sense of place, the creative spirit, and the role of dishes in social and family rituals are all brought into question. Indeed, the act of producing unique handmade pottery is a far more political act than it initially appears to most.
Professor Shynkaruk Began his artistic journey in his native country of Canada, where he was born and raised. After coming to the United States to pursue graduate degrees at the University of Iowa, he remained in the USA, where he has made his home for the past 20 years. Professor Shynkaruk has shown his work across the USA and internationally in over 80 professional exhibitions. He continues to actively explore the importance of the concept of beauty and the value of handwork to society and the human psyche. Professor Shynkaruk has taught at MSUM since 1998 as a Professor of Ceramics and is currently serving as Department Chair.
