This is just one of our many friendly neighborhood squirrels. He or she was on her way to her peanut stash as the woman who owns the house where so many of the squirrels and crows congregate puts out little plates of food for them. I love that she does this. Dear sweet squirrely

Just testing out my 100-400mm zoom lens. I was looking for a nice Wood Duck to compete with Don Baird's Mandarin Duck but to no avail.. they were a "no show" so I settled for a squirrel.

I had some old out of date trail mix. The grey squirrels liked the dried banana but went nuts for the Brazils.

I went out on my balcony today to try to see if there were any birds nearby to test my new lens on. I found a mischevious lil' squirrel perched on a neighbor's porch. This was shot at 200m on the 70-200 2.8IS and at f/3.5 (f/2.8 has a ridiculously tight DOF @ 200mm at this focal distance. I think the lens is definately a keeper!

Now I know that the squirrel that my friends have dubbed "Mayor Squabbit McFatts" really is the alpha around here--she just chased Icari the cat (who has all her claws and knows how to hunt) off the porch.
Poor Icari was dozing in the sun when Squabbit thudded onto the porch, took a step toward the feeder--and then changed her mind, swaggered up to Icari, and stuck her face directly in Icari's.
Poor Icari whimpered and ran inside.
I went outside and said to Squabbit, "You're a brat." She glared up at me and didn't budge and inch.
There are eagles living across the street. I hope she doesn't get too cocky.
We're very fond of Squabbit, even though she's a rodent terrorist.
Sciurus carolinensis - Watching me taking his picture near the big Oak tree in our yard, in Putnam County, Carmel,NY. What is the difference between the two kinds of Squirrels? We do have many Gray Squirrels in the area but this one looked like it had more brown and beige in it's fur then the regular Gray Squirrels we see. We don't live near farm land but we do have a lot of pine forest, right up to our back yard, that belongs to New York City's Reservoir property. Our area has grown a lot in the past 20 years but we still see rabbits, deer, skunks, raccoons, squirrels and many birds in our area.
