Squirrels belong to a large family of small or medium-sized rodents called the Sciuridae. The family includes tree squirrels, ground squirrels, chipmunks, marmots (including woodchucks), flying squirrels, and prairie dogs. Squirrels are indigenous to the Americas, Eurasia, and Africa and have been introduced to Australia. Squirrels are first attested in the Eocene, about forty million years ago, and are most closely related to the mountain beaver and to dormice among living species.

Red Squirrel (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus) at Mendaltna Lodge, Alaska. The squirrel was chewing noisily in to one of the many cones that lay scattered on the ground after it had busily dislodged them from the tree. . Mendaltna lodge is approximately halfway between Tok and Anchorage.
Here is a Douglas Squirrel (Tamiasciurus douglasii). I photographed this one near Burnaby lake. There aren't very many of these around this area, as they prefer dense coniferous forest. This is one of our native squirrels, and is about half the size of our imported Eastern Gray Squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis).
These have very lovely coats, with lustrous reddish silver fur, and golden yellow underbelly.

I spent half a hour watching, and trying to photograph, the antics of two squirrels in the garden this morning. (_8292258)

A story about David Douglas that we heard - He was shown the pine cones of the sugar cone (the longest in the world). He set off from Fort Vancouver to find them, which he did in the Cascade mountains. He collected the cones by shooting at them with a rifle. However, he incurred the wrath of the local Indians*, but successfully escaped with his precious cargo of sugar pines. He gave his name to this squirrel, the Douglas fir, and a few other douglas-es

We left some bird seed on the deck. This guy doesn't mind balancing on the railing to get its share.
These squirrels were at Peasholm Park, Scarborough. They were tame and could be handfed. Gave me a great chance for some lovely wildlife close shots.
This squirrel was on the tree outside our house. My daughter gave it some food and it got vdry trusting. I got like, 4 feet from it.
They do love to crack open the peanuts. Guess it's a little like unwrapping a candy bar. (Shot through a patio door and cropped to get in close, hence a bit of grain in the dark areas, but still stinking cute.)
Baby squirrels are showing up everywhere these days. Had a mama bring 3 of her babies to my feeding area. Two of them hid behind and under mom but this brave one ventured away from her and was trying to eat everything it came across as it figures out what is food and what isn't. the babies are so cute.
