For just over three years, it's been Danger Ted's aim in life to help get his Big Pal to complete 5 thousand miles of walking since retirement, at Land's End, on his 60th birthday. 551.77 miles might not seem like much, but it involved several pedometers, and resetting of them due to flat batteries. According to DT's spreadheet (which he adds to every night) it represents exactly 5000 miles. Actually one hundredth of a mile over, which annoyed him immensely. Also, this was on Sunday, which is two days before his Big Pal's Big Birthday, but you can't have everything.

I should probably explain this. I've been awkward; I've explained it somewhere other than this place.

Retrocomputing (a portmanteau of retro and computing) is the use of early computer hardware and software today. Retrocomputing is usually classed as a hobby and recreation rather than a practical application of technology; enthusiasts often collect rare and valuable hardware and software for sentimental reasons. However some do make use of it.[1] Retrocomputing often gets its start when a computer user realizes that expensive fantasy systems like IBM Mainframes, DEC Superminis, SGI workstations and Cray Supercomputers have become affordable on the used computer market, usually in a relatively short time after the computers' era of use.

The geeky thing is the selected cell, A19, is an example of conditional text. If SocialCalc scores higher than Web Spreadsheets, the wiki text in cell A33 is displayed.

A good traveler has no fixed plans, and is not intent on arriving.

-- Lao Tzu

I should confess, I am not really a follower of that quote, because in real life I like to know where I am heading (had trips where there were meticulously detailed spreadsheets of what to eat for breakfast, where to wash stuff, how many coins the machine took, whether there's a microwave in hostel etc, etc.), and I would like to be on places on time (I get annoyed at people for delays, and if you don't hold your end of bargain and don't show up, you might as well hang yourself and spare my lecture ... ).

But plans get derailed, things go awry and you need to fallback on to something else. In my perfectionist trait, that's one thing I've learned with experience. If things are not going as per plan, just let it go and chill out ... No point in pulling your hair, that ain't gonna fix anything. Enjoy the adventure of the unknown :)

In this case it was destined to be such when I decided not to book campgrounds in Joshua. The only reservable ones were at the two ends of park, not where I wanted them. So I decided to try walk-in at the other sites which were situated towards the center of the park, conveniently close to most of the trails and points of interest. I mean how hard could it be ?

I couldn't have been any more wrong. By the time I drove and reached the park, I was welcomed by the familiar "all campgrounds full" sign board. Not something to be amused about, it was a long weekend, but ... So the other options were either to get a backcountry permit and backpack to no-where and camp in the desert or to drive and find a motel to crash for the night in the neighboring Twentynine palms. The day was cloudy and windy which meant staying out in the desert had no added benefits ... there won't be any stars to shoot. So I decided to head out to the town. May be I'll find something.

So I drove straight into the town (Finding a place to crash is always my first priority) and swung into the first small, cozy motel I saw. It was run by a nice lady of possibly mediterranean descent and it took me only the first few seconds of conversation to gather that she should be the owner as well. I am a people person (No, not the social kind, but the psychology kind, I can read the average person inside out without much effort ).

You can always tell by the way they talk if they own it or work there. The passion in the words cannot be faked. I asked her the same and she confirmed my doubts.

I had also noticed a couple of murals and stuff on my way in and broke into a casual conversation with her of what is around while she was filling in my details. And lo behold, I was handed down a wealth of information about what murals are where, brief history and even a small map with most of the stuff marked in order.

Alas, I had ran into an artsy-minded town in the middle of the desert.

Lao was right, too bad I'm still not his follower.

I managed to explore quite a few of the murals in between my trips to the park. While some of them were just that, - paintings on walls, Some were more complex form of art. As a person who likes abstractions, this was like opening another dimension in what I knew so far. Complex forms I hadn't conceived before. I had run onto an ilusion art by accident.

This one, is a part from John Pugh's "Valentine's day".

Here's a riddle for you. Which part of this shot is a real painting on the wall and which of these are three dimensional structures ?

Your eyes can deceive you; don't trust them.

Am I going to regret that title? Oh, yes, I am sure that I will. Not because I'm doing another alliterative title, but because "Picturesque" is hard to spell. This will be going first to Twitter, then to Facebook, and then into an Excel spreadsheet where I track my stats . . . (TAKE THAT FLICKR PRO! YOU WEREN'T HERE WHEN I NEEDED YOU!). Please note, the caps are mock anger/outrage . . . where was I?

At this hour, even cranes look poetic. The haze glows orange, softening the concrete. It might be weather, it might be smog. Either way, the city relaxes. You can almost believe in something better. Santiago at sunset always feels like it’s about to forgive you.

Made using the spreadsheet system I developed for my Craftsy Pictures to Pixel Quilts class. www.craftsy.com/pixelquilts

We need to teach the spreadsheet how to get the slopes between data points that I have highlighted in black here. Essentially, we need to put the slope formula into the spreadsheet. The third version I have listed will be the most helpful.

In an attempt to keep better records of my C41 development kit I made a spreadsheet. It is not complete by any means but it is a start.

I have a copy printed out and kept in the room where I develop and later transfer the info to the spreadsheet.

I divide my C41 1L kit into two parts, one for immediate usage. The other in the freezer. I failed to keep records for the first half and it became contaminated - entirely my fault.

Each box is a roll of film (or sheet). A number in the box denotes the number of exposures. The note section is freeform. ASA and Camera used can be noted.

There's an intriguing social data experiment happening when we publish data to Google Spreadsheets from The Guardian Data Store.

You can see who else is looking at the data and chat with them in real time in the panel on the right-hand side of the spreadsheet.

This post on the Data Blog is the official Iran elections data by province.

"What really happened in Iran during that election count? As thousands protest against the results and demonstrate, we've gone to the Iranian Ministry of the Interior to get the official version of events.

We've then got the Presidential Office's eligible voters by region data to so we can work out what the turnout as in each case. Whether you believe over 99% turnouts anywhere is one thing, but this data is only the beginning."

Att. Cindy Oysternatz, Chandelle Resident.

The plan, which came pretty close to being executed perfectly.

I did this in Excel, with the spreadsheet cells sized to equal one inch in scale. Yes, it is scary.

Basically, when we started to think about redoing the bathroom we were torn between the subway-tile retro look and the modern look of tiny blue glass tiles. I struggled to think of how they could come together (and a very-high-end D.C. design house basically told me they couldn't come together, and that we should think of neutral colors for resale value!). Finally, I saw a photo in a magazine that showed subway tiles as wainscoting and 1-inch-by-1-inch tiles above that. I wish I had saved the picture -- the idea was much more in the earth-tone vein, but it made things click for me.

I'm very proud of this design, though I admit that it's a shameless mishmash of periods. The subway tile and the mosaic floor and the Art Deco sconces and maybe the schoolhouse pendant are sorta 1920s. The kneewall of glass block is sorta '50s-cum-'80s. The blue glass is late '90s. The towel bars are contemporary, and the vanity is that Restoration Hardware retro "apothecary" look, which may or may not have existed in any decade previous to the 1990s. The sink is a simple drop-in, and the faucets will be retro in their own way, with cross-style handles. Polished chrome is the metal choice throughout.

The shower hardware is British and traditional, with a rain head that is traditional in its own way while also being rather current.
