So here you go, this is what I do all day. Actually all evening. Although these are not pictures of me. And it's not my book. And it's not actually what I do every day, I can often instead be found running trading card tournaments or literature festivals. Or, you know. Selling books.
Which is my way of saying that outside of my self-employment as an etsy jewellery and photography peddlar, I get paid to run book events (and sometimes do local marketing and do everyone's spreadsheets. You'd be amazed how many spreadsheets people eagerly fob off to my awaiting nerdish arms)
This is maybe a cheat as this photo is made of smaller photos (all taken today) but my gosh, I've been at work 12 hours straight and I care not a fig. A FIG I SAY. I wanted to capture the sheer madness that is a book launch and this was the way forwards. This is tonight's launch of "Girl Cop" by Sandy Osborne, a local Bath policewoman and all round impressive lady. Over a hundred people turned up and probably that many books sold - it was a really lovely evening with a portion of the proceeds of the launch going to charity, and it was wonderful to see the family of the officer one of the charities was set up in remembrance of. Sandy is a lovely person and a fantastic author, I'm sure she'll have a very, very bright future.
Anyway I walked home slightly emotionally tilted after a 13 hour shift and a few hefty doses of codeine for my aggravated back injury, listening to Katzenjammer's "Lady Marlene" and during the lovely melancholic swells of the chorus (the way their voices rise to meet the line "the North wind blows" gets me every time) I found myself missing the twinkly lights of the Christmas decorations in the corridor and on the streets (both of which I've photographed for this project!) and thinking how ephemeral they were - to have been a current subject for my day posts but now gone without trace. And then during the next round of the song's chorus I passed the darkened hulk of the Bath HMV store. The slick glass branded fronting is now marred by notices of administration, the uncertainty of its future hangs over it, empty storefronts for Jessops and other vacated businesses lie adjacent to it.
And I have to think about everything we are losing in the name of making quick savings with tax-dodging internet companies. Amazon (and their ilk) have cornered the high street's market in a way that is quite frankly terrifying. They threaten not just HMV and the other ghosts of retail past but my company too, and if they manage to see off the last major chain bookstore, then what? You'll never be able to get a kindle copy of your favourite book signed by the author. An internet store won't host a signing or a talk like say, the ones we've held with Neil Gaiman, Stephen Fry, David Attenborough, John Landis - people I've run events for and can honestly say my life was enriched by meeting. And more importantly, you can't be opened up to new experiences and serendipitous finds by a freaking amazon wishlist. I remember when I was 13 years old I got into the wrong queue at WH Smiths when I was trying to pay for a magazine, and in the ultimate display of British politeness I ended up with a signed copy of a book I had never of heard of by an author I'd never read, because I was too embarrassed to admit my mistake and switch lines.
The book was "Soul Music" and the author was Terry Pratchett. I read the book after I came home one day and found my dad had swiped it and was giggling away reading it. I had to know what was so funny! I've met Terry 6 times since then (on purpose this time), two of which were events I organised with him. Some of his books have gotten me through some of my worst days by keeping a smile on my face.
I'm not averse to change, ebooks, any of that. But I am sad that in losing so much of our bricks and mortar face-to-face high street experience it seems like we're beginning to lose our cultural soul.
Anyway ahhhh far too introspective for this time of night. To bed!

Office life is absurd. The politics in particular that are involved with randomly clumping hundreds of different personalities together, taking themselves seriously in stripy shirts looking at Excel spreadsheets and having pointless meetings for eight hours a day in modern day glass and steel air-conditioned cages. During the day they all appear quite different but by night when you can peer inside, you'll see they're all very much the same.
Throw in a certain amount of fear for people's jobs, limited promotional opportunities (a different set of spreadsheets at another desk and a fancy title) and dangle the elusive 'bonus' carrot in front of everyone and sit back and enjoy the theatrics!

After a morning of spreadsheets, I treated myself to some illustrating to create a thank you card for my Grandmother from the three of us.
Unfortunately, Miss Tilda came home from school in a terrible temper and after huge tantrum (and while I was downstairs) she ripped up the card and put it in the bin. I was more than NOT HAPPY.
But, it's my nature to: "take a deep breath, pick yourself up, dust yourself off, start all over again", so this is my second attempt.
It's also my opportunity to say "thank you" to you all for your marvelous comments this week.

Diana is a math wiz, among other achievements. No wonder she can point at a spreadsheet with hilarity.
In an attempt to keep better records of my C41 development kit I made a spreadsheet. It is not complete by any means but it is a start.
I have a copy printed out and kept in the room where I develop and later transfer the info to the spreadsheet.
I divide my C41 1L kit into two parts, one for immediate usage. The other in the freezer. I failed to keep records for the first half and it became contaminated - entirely my fault.
Each box is a roll of film (or sheet). A number in the box denotes the number of exposures. The note section is freeform. ASA and Camera used can be noted.
Honey bees do visit rhododendrons for both nectar and pollen. This day in Rowallane the flowers of this Rhododendron arboreum were being worked for nectar only. I noticed that the bees seemed to be extremely selective in the flowers visited, closely checking out and rejecting up to 10 before going in hard on one. Usually they picked one that was awkward to get a picture!
There is the perennial question about toxicity to humans from grayanotoxins from rhododendron. As far as I can see it is not a real issue in the British Isles as rhodedendron will never form a big proportion of the honey and spring honey is generally consumed directly by the bees anyway during spring build-up.

Bit of a full on day today so used one of my Y6 Computing classes to take POTD. We were creating spreadsheets to set up budgets for a theme park - technical, but fun.
This template is a kind of personal health template. It is prepared for keeping track of information about medications that you apply. SpreadsheetWEB version of the template allows you to keep your log on the web. With the Save feature, you can save and update your personal medication log online.

One eye on the potential sunset and one eye on a spreadsheet. This is how I spend Monday thru Friday from 4pm to 5pm. Sometimes it's not a spreadsheet but a planning tool, or statistical graphs or a command line interface. Invariably it's data of one sort or another - acquiring it, analyzing it, and making changes as a result of it. It's part of having the "Knack", or at least pretensions of the "knack".

Most days, the sunsets are nothing special but every now and again a beauty appears. This was one of those beauties. So I drove 5 minutes from the office down to the river and enjoyed a beautiful show of light.

I bought a ColorMunki sensor like Christoph Bartneck used for his book, since it seemed MUCH more accurate than the Spectro Pro 1 when using a SpyderCheckr 48 as a standard reference point, and I am happier with the results! :)
I've fully swapped my Color List over to the ColorMunki's hexes as the background for the LEGO color names, as well as RyanHex in the Fan Colors view. The more I compared the old colors to the new, the less satisfied I was with them. The ColorMunki's solid colors seem much more vibrant and it seems to do better with most transparent colors than the Spectro. The new chromes and other metallized colors turned out unexpectedly dark, but not necessarily worse than the overly pale Spectro colors IMO.
I did a little housekeeping on the webpage itself too — importing the fonts correctly, better padding/leading, fixing the lightness calculator so colors like Vibrant Yellow don't end up with white text.
Also recategorized a few colors — I'm now counting Flip/Flop colors as Opal, and Clikits' pearl white as an Ink. As soon as I realized I disagreed with BrickLink's categorization on some of the colors, it didn't make sense to use their system at all. I never liked "Satin" in the first place. (But I could probably be convinced to change "Metalized" back to "Chrome"...)
