set up the softbox mobile kit for a pregnancy shoot,

and took the time to shoot some selfies afterwards

Trying for Peter Hurley style headshots. Looking at his though I see I crop too close above the eyes. Could do with more colour too.

strobist: unknown flashes in 2'softboxes left and right at forehead level. Another slightly underpowered flash on the background. One PW, rest optical slaves.

Lighting info: Profoto D1 through softbox, camera left.

This is the "softbox" I made that one afternoon. Just a sudden idea, there was no previous planning, so I started to cut the cardboard box right away. :) I used tape to put the four parts together, covered the inside with aluminum foil and attached tracing paper on the front side. When it was finished, I looked at it and was almost certain that there is no way that this would work. I tried anyway.

...kinda felt sorry for the crippled photons in advance.

Strobist info: Vivitar 2600 camera left triggered with sync cord, 580EXII (the one on the photo) into something scary, triggered with light sensor

ps: in the up coming weekends I plan to take this DIY project _seriously_ as well

Then I taped together the remaining edge. In this configuration its not stable and tends to fold down (you can see it is supported on both sides) - it will be both flash and front diffuser that will support it.

setting up light (strobe, softbox) at home, working on portraits

New strobe and softbox that I have NO idea how to use. Out of several dozen shots, these were the only ones that were not underexposed to almost black. Time to buy a few books on flash.

I had no one to test it with so this is actually hand held in front of me... guess I need a remote or test dummy, er I mean subject.

**All I could get were very dark shots with the 580EX II triggering the Genesis 200 strobe in the Nova 32 softbox. So, I turned off the speedlite and connected a cable from the camera directly to the strobe and got this.** I hate not knowing what I'm doing. grrr

1/4 Sony f58am flash above in DIY lightbox

This is for a project I had for my lighting class where I had to shoot something transparent. It's not exactly transparent, but it is shiny, and that's good enough for me.

Shot with one Profoto light through a softbox on the left. Light is reflected by the pane of glass below and a white board held at an angle above and to the right. There is also a white board underneath the glass.

Final result shown here

1x 110W @ 1/8 power with umbrella placed close to the left of subject.

1x 110W @ 1/8 power with softbox placed just as close to the right of the apple.

1x Canon Speedlite 430EX @ 1/64 power (105mm) with omnibounce to get rid of an ugly reflection.

testing the softbox

Tired of those dim dark northern winter days? You need a Big Bright Light!

Seated in front of a flash powered soft box. No other effective illumination due to the power of the flash.

Final shot from Sunday's examination in my photography school. This is my favourite group, they are so talented and just crazy! Love 'em! That was very interesting and efficient 5 weeks.

P.S. I'm in the center :)

Visited my friend Aaron Van of AaronVan Photography at his studio to play with light and shoot Zip and his fascination with mountain bikes. Was a great learning experience as always!

This was an accident shot that I like more than some of the posed shots of the evening.

I just got my first softbox (24") and a lightstand and was playing around with it tonight. Now I just need to get a backdrop...

Strobist info: I had the softbox set up on camera left about 3 feet away from the subject and on camera right, just out of frame, I had a silver reflector to lighten the shadows. I used a 580ex ii inside the softbox. I triggered the flash using Cowboy Studio raido triggers.

Confeccionado com Papel Cartão (pasta suspensa), Papel A4 branco, Grampeador, Fita Adesiva e sacola plástica. À esquerda molde para modelo a finalizar. Com papel Cartão, Fita Dupla Face, Cola e Papel Seda.

Here's the softbox with a Vivitar 283 firing inside, dialed down and with ambient augmented by a Vivitar 285 to provide a balanced demo shot, and with just two clips holding the diffuser. With all the clips in place, I can also attach barn doors and gobos for more light control as needed. I could probably also easily attach a (DIY) grid if I wanted to.

Seriously the ugliest softbox ever, and not all that portable. But it works, and it cost me about $0.00 :-) Now I just have to figure out how to attach it to a light stand.

Chrissi - 07

My friend Chrissi needed some pictures for her job application. She asked me to take some shots of her and I gladly accepted as I need the practice. It was really funny and I've learned a lot of new things about lighting. Here are some of the more interesting shots.

"contax g2 .flash" "soft box"

Testing out the home made Softbox to take these. Turned out pretty good for a carboard box, toilet paper, and some tape.

Strobist: 580EXII cam right thru small softbox @ 1/4. Fired via pw.

So, a couple things happened this week:

1) I got a boom arm so I can actually light from above now. (have a lot to learn about lighting still - watching Jules Marshall & Tim Medcalf for clues on how to do it right)

2) I actually picked up a book on Lightroom and started to understand how much more I can do in post than I realized.

These couple portraits are the initial result.
