I was playing the idea of a homemade softbox and gave myslef a 30 minute limit on construction. I made it out of an Mpix box. It is an ugly thing that will never leave my house but it did serve the purpose of testing with that type of modifier. I think I might get a soft box

Pullback shot to show my lighting. All bulbs are daylight spectrum CFLs, one in the tall lamp for ambient room light and one in the homemade softbox. (See my DIY Softbox set for how I made it!) It's awkwardly balanced on top of a small box and my tripod, which meant I couldn't put the actual camera on the tripod. I need a better way to position that thing.

Backdrop is pretty paper I bought at the local art supply place, stickytacked to the wall. The black thing is a sheet of foamcore, I ditched it after a couple shots cause I was trying to keep it out of frame anyway.

Pick and shoot. Me and my good friend Sopan doing a walk to Kpg Semariang Batu yesterday when we met this boy playing with the hammer behind the under construction house. We are very lucky because this young kid agree when we want to shoot his portrait. The unplanned pose, he is freely move in-front of my lens ;D

softbox camera right and one spotlight

I've been wanting to pick up a grid or two for my little 24"x24" softboxes, but they typically run about $150. Ouch! There are a number of DIY grid projects on the internet, but most are fashioned from paper - a medium which doesn't lend itself to being portable, storable, and durable... not to mention presentable.

How about a professional style fabric honeycomb grid that is easy to attach, simple to store, and hardy? Yes, it can be made for less than $10. In fact I made two for $15. And they work great! Putting one of these grids together is about as simple as, well, playing with scissors, connecting the dots, and stapling stuff.

Deflector plate, diffuser and grid can be used simultaneously or in any desired combination. Deflector plate can be mounted convex in or concave in as desired, for further control of light spread.

My setup for a quick and easy way to quickly adjust the softbox angle

To make it extra portable, the bracketry can be disassembled via wing nuts. I also used slots so that the brackets could be adjusted to fit any speedlite.

The brackets are aluminum that i got from Home Depot. The wing nuts are just standard wing nuts that I coated in Plasti-Dip.

You could just use one trigger with a Y-cable but I threw them both on there for the picture.

Meet my now neighbor and one of my university friends. She's so bubbly and pretty, and so easy to get along with. I'm so glad shes back from Oz and just round the corner!

This is my Magic Wife, Yafit. I call her Magic Wife because between taking care of the three kids, grandma, dog, house and everything else that goes along with it (me) she never misses a beat; things get done like magic.

Today was the first night of Passover and the first time in her life she was without here parents on this night. She pulled it off like she'd done it 1000 times before. Dinner was awesome, house was put together and you would never know she'd spent the entire day in the kitchen.

Todays bit of madness, attempted to make a mini softbox from a couple of bits of card and tracing paper.

Just a quick test to see if it works and to see where improvements are needed before doing it properly.

The light is difussed through two layers of tracing paper, the first just over halfway between the flash and the front piece, as can be seen from the light showing through the sides. Next step is to use something a little more opaque to hopefully diffuse the light further, without losing too much light.

Will probably try another lined with aluminium tape to see if that makes any improvement, though I'm worried the extra reflection might give a harder light. We shall see :)

Flash is a Yongnuo YN460 set at 1/8th and I'm feeling a bit stupid that I didnt think to use the wide angle difusser over the lense, what a dummy :)

This shot is over exposed by about a stop to show more detail.

Both small softboxes comes with circle masks and strip masks, which is kind of pointless for the box this size, but the included fabric grids are very useful accesories.

Here is a nice location I found some time ago when I missed the last train to go home in Osaka, and I had to waste some time until the morning, so I decided to try finding some interesting photo locations. So here is Nakatsu 中津, this is just under the Hankyu Railway Station, a kind of old warehouse that's not used, and it's even open for us. Next to the warehouse is a parking, where I had my flashes on a 2.5m high flash stand, so I could have that shadows inside the place I was shooting!

Primeras pruebas con el softbox GODOX 60x60 cm.

Flash Yongnuo 568EX con softbox 60x60 lateral izquierdo a 45º respecto a la horizontal.

I bought a couple of cheap softboxes from Adorama and made a bracket for my hot shoe flashes. Took me a while to figure how exactly to get it to work, but basically I ended up buying a T bracket and a straight piece of steel to bend and drill holes through.

Here are a few I shot with one of the softboxes. Sorry the dog was the only one available to be photographed at the time. Will try to get people shots later.
