An update to the new mold for the Queen’s carapace (Aliens 1:18 scale)

Here’s a few shots of the vent work. These parts are very thin and need proper venting for the air to escape. Hoping this will be enough.

Pouring the mold tonight!

Stay tuned

Super Sculpey original and first Smooth-Cast 300 comparison, Side View Right. I definitely have some deviation from the original, due no doubt to my first mold being not too perfection.

Super Sculpey Firm fetal skull sculpted to molded for halloween props. My 4th sculpture ever.

Build/Sculpt update on the Nostromo Sleep Chamber - ALIEN 79 - 1:18 scale.

Focus has been fitting the sleeping Parker figure snuggly into his chamber. This is the last of the seven passengers to be "put to bed" so to speak.

The bedding was sculpted using Aves FIXIT sculpt, allowed to cure a few hours then shaped to the contours of Parker so the fit can be snug and exact. I don't need him to be rolling around in the chamber pod.

So each chamber pod is unique to their character. Next will be some patch work to clean up the chamber pods - Small air holes from the casting that need to be filled and sanded.

I have several pod canopies that need to be completed with sculpted framework. Then I have to figure out how to present the chamber with pod doors both closed and opened. I need to figure that out before I begin to attach each pod to the central hub and fill seams.

I have three more characters to mold and cast - Sleeping Ash, Sleeping Kane and Sleeping Dallas. I have castings for the remaining crew.

I may attempt to mold/cast each of the pods as well. With them having unique contours to the bedding, it would suck to have to sculpt all that again if I decided to replicate another chamber down the road.

Anyway, I ramble as usual. Thanks to those that stuck with it and read through the entire description. I sometimes feel I waste my time even explaining my creative process these days. I sometimes feel I do it more for myself than anyone else LOL!

More to come! Hope everyone is having a good weekend!

Here's another vac bag; front fender fairing for a NASCAR race car. This one done using Smooth-On's EZ Brush Vac Bag Silicone...

New mold a success! Ill be pouring the casts tonight. The master broke when i was demolding.

The front surface has undulations and a slight bow in the front surface, but nothing some major sanding and shaping wont fix. I'm happy I was able to get a workable positive out of this and continue machining on something more stable than the fragile Sculpey original.

The other idea was to float the model, do a single pour, then slice into the rubber and keep it a one piece mold. You'll see later that both have their share of problem bubbles.

For this mold I am using Dragon Skin silicone from Smooth On. Mostly because I have it on hand, but also because its a great product. You can see the Silc Pig and Thivex additive here to. These are required to make a good brush on mold and are worth the added expense. I am doing a brush on mold with Dragon skin because it very tough and I can make a very thin flexible mold that will accommodate a lot of undercuts and some of my stranger decisions about mold making.

This turned out ok, except for bubbles that formed in all of the limb openings. grrrrr. I'm going to have LOTS of clean up to do.

I could not find appropriate strips of rubber nor large rubber bands, so I got these bungee strap canopy tarp ties at the hardware store. I knew my mold dimensions beforehand and got these 12" cords that did the trick.
