Custom Cast Hair Pieces.
One was molded with Alumilite Quickset Silicone and casted with Alumilite Super Plastic Resin. The other was molded with Smooth-On OOMOO 30 and cast with Easy Cast Clear Casting Resin dyed with Alumilite White Resin Dye.
Both were sanded with 500 grit then 1000 grit sandpaper and painted with Testors Flat White Spray.
Can you tell the difference?
No? To be honest, I can't either.
Very happy with the results from both. Making the molds was easy with both the Smooth-On and the Alumilite products. Casting the molds and sanding was much easier with the Alumilite compared to the Easy Cast. I would very much like to try the Smooth-On Resin products to see how they compare, but I still have a bit of Alumilite and Easy Cast resin left.
No foamcore this time round. I'm using 1/2" plexi-glass and clamps to create as level and straight a mold as possible.

Paint and membrane cast progress on the Fifield Monster head sculpt - CGIVersion - Prometheus 1:18 scale. The membrane, cast using smooth-on crystal clear 300 hasn't fully cured yet so additional images will be taken once it hardens and I can add additional paint work to it. THRILLING isn't the word to describe what I'm feeling right now after receiving these pictures from Jean-Pierre Jeunet this morning of my Newborn (Alien: Resurrection) head sculpt on display along with various other miniatures made by fellow artists, Kazuhito Kimura, Dominique Roche and the director himself, Jean-Pierre Jeunet!
So happy and thankful once again for the opportunity to contribute to a beautiful display full of brilliant work. I'm honored to be part of it!

At this point in the week, my priority really is to get 2 of these painted up to display at NY Comic Con. I've clearly abandoned any hope of doing a limited edition run for the show.
Instead, I'll be shopping the prototype around and see what kind of interest I can gather for doing a professionally produced, mass production. I might taked a 2nd stab at generating new molds when I have more time.

Paint test for the Newborn head sculpt - Alien: Resurrection.
As said, this is a paint test...not much detailing added, it helps me figure what paints necessary, as well as custom mixes that may be needed. Also helps to familiarize myself with the terrain so to speak...so I don't screw up on a final casting. Simply put - it's a practice piece.
There's many interpretations of the creatures skin color - some have it fleshy, pale appearance (like seen in the film), others have a greenish/gray hue. I will stick with the production/prop tones (which is a mix of both) for this piece. Love the dark, soulless eyes...ohhhh eerie!

Two casts pulled from the new molds. The body turned out the best, however, there are STILL bubbles inside the openings. There's simply nowhere for the air to get out on those concave surfaces when the character is lying horizontally.
Just for kicks, I thought I would show a technique I've been using to get great cutting edges on my prosthetics. It's a variation on a technique I learned from the Niel Gorton dvds. Since my molds are epoxy, I can bolt at the eyes and mouth. Works great!
Making monsters....that's the plan anyway. Casting some head frames to sculpt over first. Will do several do I don't have to stop and cast anymore later. Also plan to sculpt some Giger eggs as well as a few of the Covenant ones. More to come!!! #alien #aliens #sculpting #casting #smoothon #resin

I initially wanted to shoot some video of the process but the ten-dollar tripod I purchased from Amazon broke and went sailing across the room so that's not going to happen. Ah well, you get what you paid for LOL! I'll try again later - got a bunch more molds to make here soon.

Sculpt progress on The Queen - ALIENS 86 - 1:18 scale.
Plastic casting test on the head/jaw build. Rough test, nothing cleaned up or painted.
I used Smooth-On Smooth Cast 320. I do plan in casting the teeth in a transparent plastic eventually.
I've been molding and casting several pieces to my build over the past week or so and have taken some shots of the successes. Surprisingly everything turned out great for the exception of the Alien Warrior mold which I had to redo. More on that one later.
Here is a plastic casing of the four components to create the Alien Queen head and jaw. This is one of several variants that will be made to "plug and play" into the Queen's carapace.
I put one together using some of the initial pulls to get an idea how it will all work. Happy with the results. Next step will be moving onto the neck and variant head sculpts.

Sculpt progress on the Alien Newborn - Alien: Resurrection - 1:18 scale. Sculpt using Aves FIXIT sculpt from Aves Studio.
This week I worked on the body of the creature, namely the arms (upper and lower) as well as the hips and upper legs.
Plenty of adjustments to be made to the muscular folds and definition through the hips/pelvis. Happy with the proportion of the elongated arms vs. the length of the torso.
Going to work on the hips some more but begin working on the hands and add more definition to the lower arms.

mythological creatures and Leprechauns (if they actually existed). Resin

So after my debacle with the two part mold, happy to report that the castings so far have come out quite well!!! Clean as a whistle! A little hiccup on the hod but easily fixed. Made two so far, will make another two (possibly using some pigment) and continue on with the project. Gotta place it on hold though while I prepare to paint the newborn head for Jean-Pierre Jeunet!!! Want to get that completed over the weekend.
Hope my paints haven't all dried up LOL!

Build update on The Queen - ALIENS - 1:18 scale.
Well,....the quest for a two part mold was a bust. Not a failure mind you, the mold is good but I wasn't clear that the mold release I was using needed to be petroleum based and NOT silicon based....which is like pouring fuel on a fire.
I'm not sure that's what happened - I need to investigate. This morning when I went to separate the two pieces (was very excited) it was like I poured a one piece block mold. Completely mended...not a trace of a seam line, nothing. So I had to cut the sculpture out of the mold.....I was very disappointed.
50 dollars a pop on molding material - so this cost me around 150.00....don't let people tell you this is an affordable hobby to get into.
Fortunately the mold can be used. Still need to cut some air vents here and there but all in all it came out very nice when capturing the details. I'll try it out tonight.
Would I have preferred a two part old? Absolutely! I may still produce one later on. Right now, I need to replicate a master and a few work copies in order to move forward with the project.
Lesson's learned...

Super Sculpey original and first Smooth-Cast 300 comparison, Front View. The thickness added to the bottom of the feet help to raise the character a bit, and also are much more level.

Molding time! Time to mold the first of many parts that will be made to create this beautiful beast. First piece for replication will be the carapace (crown). This will be a two part mold, and as usual, I run out of product before I have a chance to finish! :(
I got the first half of the molding process complete - have ordered more material and it should be in my hands a couple days from now.
Built the mold box from foam core and used monster clay for the blocking. Applied a brushing of mold material (Smooth-On Mold Star 15 Slow) over the entire sculpt and surface, then made my pour. Several hours later, inverted the mold and cleared the monster clay to begin the second phase....coming later this week.
Will add more venting prior to doing my first cast. Much more to come...got some painting to do!!!
