Today's topic for Our Daily Challenge is "Sliced," and to show my absolute dedication to the group, I sacrificed a piece of my finger by slicing it with with my trusty Uncle Henry pocket knife.

 

And, if you believe that, I have a beautiful golden colored bridge I can sell you with clear title and lien-free. This was all done in Photoshop Elememts, using two shots of my finger: one without the knife and the other with the knife.

After kind of not doing anything today, I decided to waste a few minutes shooting Christmas bulbs at my salvaged knife.

 

Triggering was an issue again, three bulbs died in vain. But the third did fire the flash giving us this non -masterpiece.

Old Fashioned Apple Pie

Recipe from Martha Stewart

 

Ingredients

Makes one 9-inch double crust pie

5 tablespoons all-purpose flour, plus more for work surface

Pate Brisee (Recipe Below)

1 large egg yolk

1 tablespoon heavy cream

1 tablespoon cornstarch

4 pounds assorted cooking apples, peeled, cored, and cut into 1/4-to 1/2-inch-thick slices

3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice, washed

3/4 cup granulated sugar

1/4 teaspoons ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/4 cup cold (1/2 stick) unsalted butter, ,cut into 1/2-inch pieces

Sanding sugar, for sprinkling

Directions

1. Turn out 1 piece of dough onto a lightly floured work surface. Roll into a 13-inch round, about 1/8 inch thick. Fit into 9-inch pie plate. Trim edges flush with rim. Freeze until firm, about 30 minutes.

2. Roll out remaining dough on parchment paper to a 13-inch round, about 1/8 inch thick. Transfer to a baking sheet; refrigerate until firm, about 30 minutes.

3. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Whisk egg yolk and cream in a small bowl; set egg wash aside. Put apples, lemon juice, granulated sugar,cornstarch, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt in a large bowl; toss to combine. Fill pie shell with apple mixture, and dot with butter. Lightly brush edge of pie with a wet pastry brush. Place dough round on top of pie. Trim edges flush with rim; press to seal. Crimp edges as desired. Make four 1/2-inch slits in center of pie. Brush top with egg wash; sprinkle with sanding sugar. Freeze 30 minutes.

Place pie on a baking sheet. Bake until crust begins to turn golden brown, about 20 minutes. Reduce oven temperature to 350 degrees. Bake until crust is golden brown and juices are bubbling, about 35 minutes. Cover with foil if browning too quickly. Let cool completely on a rack.

 

Pate Brisee: Pie Dough

Recipe from Martha Stewart

Makes enough for one double-crust or two single crust 9-inch pies

 

Ingredients

2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon salt

1 cup cold (2 sticks) unsalted butter, cut into 1/2-inch pieces

1/4 to 1/2 cup ice water

Directions

1. Pulse flour and salt in a food processor. Add butter, and pulse until mixture forms coarse crumbs with some larger pieces remaining, about 10 seconds.

2. With machine running, add ice water in a slow, steady stream just until dough holds together without being wet or sticky, no longer than 30 seconds.

3. Divide dough in half, and shape into disks. Wrap in plastic; refrigerate at least 1 hour or overnight. Dough can be frozen up to 1 month; thaw in the refrigerator overnight before using.

  

The photo shows a delicious-looking, open-faced sandwich on a white plate, set against a backdrop of warm-toned wooden planks, likely a table surface. The sandwich features a multigrain roll, generously topped with several layers of ingredients.

 

Starting from the bottom, you can see fresh, light green lettuce leaves providing a crisp base. On top of the lettuce are slices of pale pink deli meat, possibly ham or turkey. Overlapping the meat are two slices of light yellow cheese, likely Gouda or a similar mild variety.

 

Nestled among the cheese and meat are slices of hard-boiled egg, revealing the white and a portion of the yellow yolk. Adding a touch of freshness and color are slices of red tomato and thin slivers of cucumber. A few vibrant green arugula leaves are also placed on top, adding a peppery note and visual appeal.

 

The multigrain roll, sliced horizontally, has a slightly rustic appearance with visible seeds and grains on its crusty top. The bottom half of the roll is partially obscured by the toppings.

 

The lighting in the photo appears natural, casting soft shadows and highlighting the textures of the different ingredients. The overall impression is of a fresh, appetizing, and well-prepared sandwich, perfect for a light meal.

 

This shot was inspired by an article on DIY Photography website about taking pictures of sliced fruit and using photoshop (GIMP in my case) to create some cool effects.

Here's another shot of floating food. You can tell I really like bananas :o)

It's a little bit sloppy, it's the best I can do for now. I went through a few bananas for this shot... that's okay, it wasn't at waste! More bananas for me!

What I did on this last day of autumn.

 

My late grandfather made me this board specifically for bread:)

24 slices from a sunset timelapse. Each slice is 10 shots apart, the interval between shots was 5 seconds, so there's a 50 second time difference from one slice to the next. A fun technique, but I still prefer the full "time stack" (see previous photo)

A rather rustic way to enjoy apples ...

This photo has been taken in la Défense (Paris). I was waiting for my own train. And then, on the train platform nearby, I saw this train waiting, showing the passengers living their after-work life alone in their own window...

I wanted this chair called orange slice made by Artifort in 1959 ...for a long time...guess today was my lucky day

We had some oranges that didn't taste as good as they looked, so rather than toss them, I sliced them, strung them on lengths of crochet cotton, and hung them in my kitchen window.

A lower bough of one of our apple trees had to be removed earlier this year. The tree is exactly my age and we are both bearing the scars of passing time nowadays.
