The Dresden type satyr-hermaphrodite group is known through more than 30 Roman replicas in various media. The meaning of the group has traditionally been derived from its discovery in domestic contexts, but replicas from the theaters at Daphne and Side raise different questions regarding viewer reception. The horizontal composition and small scale of the groups suggest they may have decorated the "pulpitum" (stage) of those theaters. At the Daphne theater, where two replicas were found, the groups were likely displayed as pendants, offering complimentary views of the same sculptural composition. In terms of subject matter, the Dresden type satyr-hermaphrodite group yields several nuanced interpretations associated with the theater, including connotations of "paideia" (Roman reverance for the Greek past), Dionysiac aspects, the reversal of norms, the objectification of the body, the sexual tryst, and the "agon".

repurposed vintage cookbook as sketchbook; gesso, pencil and paint; collage materials from Vesna Radivojevic

These three series of sketchbook scribblings are part of one drawing session one night. I just started drawing off the top of my head. Totally random and left of center for me. I really enjoyed it. Some of the drawings relate to what was going on on the other side of the page, especially with the Sharpie marker stuff.

Fabric sewn to sketchbook page, drawn with marker then stitched free motion by machine.

Hey everyone,

Exciting news: I’m one of the teachers in Stretching, an upcoming Sketchbook Skool klass! Yes, that’s “klass,” with a k, because Sketchbook Skool is no ordinary online art skool. Sketchbook Skool’s mission is “art for all”—they believe everyone is, and can be, creative. All people need are teachers to show them how fun it can be to develop a creative habit. That’s where I come in!

Starting August 5, Sketchbook Skool’s Stretching klass will begin online. For each of the six weeks of the kourse, you’ll get a new teacher (including me!) showing you how to take your creativity to the next level. You’ll also join the Sketchbook Skool community of creative people just like us from all over the world. There are fun, informative lessons, great assignments, and places to post your creations! To check out Stretching and meet the teachers, click here: sketchbookskool.com/kourses/stretching

There’s still time to sign up for this great kourse, but you don’t want to miss a single moment. Join me and Sketchbook Skool and sign up for Stretching now!

My handmade watercolour sketchbook with bananas! (Couldn't wait to start using it!!)

Sketchbook crisis! Only just now at my half way point of my overall trip and already 2.5 sketchbooks used up. I haven't been sketching as much as previous years but seem to be spreading out more. Have no. 4 waiting for me at my next destination. Off to a church conference next week so not as much sketching ... But need to work slower or just stop sketching!?!?

This is my huge sketchbook (A3 format when closed) for the drawings I do in our Tousled Garden. It was a present from my husband in March 2010, and this started my first sketches in April 2010. I only use it for the garden (it is rather heavy). I really like it because you have the liberty to do many tiny or little sketches on one page or big ones, depending on your mood or on the subject, and that is nice.
