Handmade sketchbook/journal (book binding + hand-drawn covers).
This is a big sketchbook (31 x 24 cm) I made as gift for a friend.
I hope he likes it and find useful for his art works' sketches.
Made on iPad with Sketchbook Pro for the contest: Sketchbook hero.
I love the idea of showing the drawing half finished, half original sketch AND this also enforces the idea of my IAMDA CON workshop (using the same concept)
Made some new sketchbooks. Some with watercolor paper, some with my favorite drawing paper. Let's go and draw..
The Beta series is another Extra Heavy Weight sketchbook at 180lb/270gsm. Like the Zeta series its pretty much bulletproof when it comes to watercolour washes. Its classed as cold press though the texture is still pretty smooth and not really like the texture you get with regular cold pressed watercolour paper.
One of the effects of using these books is they did alter how I use sketchbooks. Moleskines are cool, but they take a bit of getting used to the way watercolour doesn't really sit on the pages well at all. It takes ages to add watercolour to the moleskine paper so didn't really suit drawing outside. With the Stillman & Birn books its easy to do washes so its much easier to fill a page.
Another thing the Moleskin books are great with Faber Castell Artist pens and other fibre tip pens. The Stillman & Birn ones aren't so good, the ink I think gets absorbed too quickly and doesn't really glide over the paper. This turned out to be a blessing in disguise as I tried using fountain pens and dip pens instead with these you get a much more varied an interesting line.
One of the advantages I find in having a Flickr photostream is that I can organize and compare old work with new. It helps to evaluate new work and find new direction.
None of this sketchbook was painted to be seen, and so has a fresh and lively look made without any inhibition.
I have very exciting news for you!
I am making a calendar using my sketchbook drawings!
Each month is printed on gorgeous 4"x6" archival matte paper.
They are fade-resistant with vivid colors and will last for at least 100 years.
I will update you on this project soon!
Well my dots were bound to find their way into my sketchbook. But this won't happen too often as I want to keep my sketchbook as dot-free as possible. This started off as a watercolour but then ended up with dots of acrylic.
From an R. Crumb sketchbook. For his most recent work checkout his illustrated version of the Book of Genesis

Done for the theme "Highly Prized" and The Sketchbook Challenge. Inspired by Jane Lafazios's chair, done for the same theme.
