Taken for Week 20/52 Weeks for Pix: Theme is 3. 3 shells from Florida Bay in Key Largo. When alive, these shells are sea snails, who live in the sea grass in Florida Bay. When I swim in the bay, I find these shells, with the snails dead. Sometimes they are inhabited by hermit crabs, who have taken over the shells. Then I put them back in the water, so that the hermit crabs live. There are usually many live sea snails- and occasionally I find these shells from the ones who have died. Much fear for what is to come of this ecosystem with the oil spill. I photograph what I love. What I love is endangered and terribly threatened right now.
Part of my 100 possibliities project, taking 100 photos of the center shell. Maybe survival is also a possiblility.
Sunset in Miami, along Biscayne Bay. Taken on my walk after work. This whole area is threatened by the oil spill. IT is still clear and beautiful- please come visit. But the oil spill effects are already in the loop current, and who knows what will be brought our way in Florida. The toxic effects of the oil spill would certainly kill all of the snails who are mostly alive who inhabit these shells. They might never recover from such a devastating hit. Let us hope that the oil spill miraculously does not affect us here in Florida.
Scientists have had many ideas how to mop up and clean the oil. Why has it taken so long to begin to act on their recommendations?

Shells, shells and more shells! I think it's a requirement if you live in Florida to have jars of shells all over your house.

Didn't get any photos of the gas station, but I took this to show how Shell reused the frame of Burger King's old sign for themselves. Thrifty!
It was just after Midnight. I was running errands, and had my camera with me. Drove by once, thought it looked neat. Came back around, parked, and snapped this one.

The house boat crew dumped us off at some random village near Kumarakom. Right next to the dock were these piles of shells and some kind of shell grinding apparatus. Or at least that's the theory.

Went shooting with my girls this weekend at a friend's house in Fredericksburg (see this pic for the awesome sunrise view we had on Father's Day). Later that evening I remarked, "Wow, we shot a lot of clays today". I quickly corrected myself, however, amending my statement to "Well, we THREW a lot of clays today". We have fun regardless of how well we shoot on a given day. Lots of memories come out of these events.
I managed to shoot about 40 rounds out of the 12 gauge before I got tired of the kick then I switched to the 20 gauge (we had three 20s out there) and went through another 50-ish. The girls and friends went through their share as well and we ended up with quite a pile of spent shells, part of which you see in the pic above. We also shot plenty of rounds out of a 9mm Glock, a .22 Ruger pistol, and a couple .22 rifles.
The pic above was created by tonemapping three exposures, the darkest of which just helped bring down the metal reflections a bit. I blended in a bit here and there from the original exposures and parts from a layer processed with the "photo pop" preset in Topaz Adjust. Added a curves adjustment, a slight levels adjustment (brought in more blacks), and a bit of sharpening to all that and voila…there it is.
