Hugh numbers of shellfish/bivalves are collected using motorised pumps that suck up the sea floor and run it through a filter. It is a very effective method but highly destructive for small shellfish and other invertebates. Bohai area 2011.

This man came into the Hobbit and tried to sell us shellfish. He noticed that I took his picture and I ended up having to buy a bag of prawn crackers with some dubious thousand island dressing....
