I certainly wasn't expecting these cute little snails. Generally speaking, Rodenbeck is not squeamish when it comes to the consumption of flesh. There are infrequent exceptions. This was one of them.
At the Victor Hugo Market (Marché Victor Hugo) in Toulouse.
This was March 15, the day after Macron closed France. The streets were empty, but the market had some customers. The restaurants on the second floor of the Victor Hugo were closed.
We toured Essaouira with a local guide. This was the northern bastion of the walled city. I've seen it called Skala de la Kasbah and Saqqalah de Kasbah. The view to the north was nice!
This guy had apparently been gathering shellfish. The sandals he's wearing on those rocks make my feet hurt in sympathy.
As a mountainous country with little arable land and thousands of miles of shoreline, Japan has long had a special relationship to the sea-- which makes March's tsunami all the more tragic. Going to the ocean and digging up clams and other shellfish is a popular traditional activity among Japanese families, especially in the spring. As with the tradition of having all elementary school students plant and harvest rice, this activity contributes to the strong bond Japanese people feel between themselves, their food, and the land. In this case, however, this man makes a living gathering shellfish and selling them to local markets and restaurants.
