A few years back I chaperoned my daughter's field trip to the Marin Headlands. I learned from the docent that ice plant was not native to California. I was really amazed by this since it is all over the California coast. Both Southern and Northern California coastlines are covered in it. I have never seen the ice plant here so red and vibrant. The plant was introduced from South Africa to stabilize the soil on the railroad tracks and later along the shorelines. The plant is very invasive and spreads easily.

Inspired by Nathan Wirth's "Athiest" series of self portraits. I thought my best SP would be one where I'm moving and I managed to catch it!!
I met up with Steve C. to shoot anemones at the tide pools. We were both fascinated by this beautiful one, it had great folds and seemed to be glowing from within. I took probably a dozen photos and then went on. Later when I went back the light had changed and he had folded up a bit and wasn't nearly as interesting. Beauty can be fleeting~
I spent this past weekend with my wife to celebrate our 22nd anniversary! We stayed in Bodega Bay and had a blast! This shot was taken from one of our favorite spots on the Sonoma Coast. The waves were pounding the coast during the weekend as this was taken in between storms.

The monkeys didn’t see any dinosaurs but did see lots of sea lions, pelicans, cormorants, some sea otters and an osprey.
I always have a tough time packing up...something that has to annoy my friends who couldn't care less about photography. I walked up on this as we were leaving Shell Beach the other night and had to set up all over again. Prime time was more or less done so I really wanted to put all the focus on the board.

Up close look at the oral surface of this sea anemone. Mimi agreed that this one was far different, with much larger and well defined scallops, than any others seen today. Enhanced to emphasize oral components.

Shell Beach is one of only a handful of places on earth where shells replace beach sand in such a dramatic and picturesque way. A walk on Shell Beach is like no other. Incredibly, the beach is made up of shells from the Shark Bay cockle, making it truly unique. On a still day, the ocean at Shell Beach transforms into a palette of the most intense greens and blues - and the water is very salty (hypersaline), making it easy to float for those who aren’t strong swimmers - similar to the Dead Sea in Jordan.
There is a nasty Poison Oak infested, sewer smelling, sloppy little creek on the walk down to the beach at the Cliffs Resort near Pismo Beach (Shell Beach). Wouldn't you know it,right there is this single bush of flowers, perfectly backlit, just dying to be photographed. Here is what I came up with.
I had to really crop this in order to get to this final composition, so the resolution is not that great.

Near sunset at my favorite little park in Shell Beach. In the winter the sun sets to the south behind the palms, by summer it sets behind Point Buchon to the center right of the photo.
Western Gulls battle it out. I watched the one on the left trying to get away from another one that was hanging on to its wing. When it finally let go, the gull on the right attacked it. They locked beaks for several minutes and pulled, but eventually they stopped. I couldn't tell who won. They walked around head down, occasionally squawking at each other, when the battle was over. Get my idiot self out of this shot and that's one hell of a sunset. BUT I'm doing lots of tests with different light and different apertures and am pretty excited about this one.

A gorgeous mix of light and color. Sky and Land was enveloped in the most beautiful colors from horizon to horizon. A rare moment on the Central Coast.

Shell Beach near Denham in Western Australia is one of only two beaches in the world entirely made up of shells.
as it is I swore at least twice during this exposure and ate a wave about 20 seconds before I shot this. Blek!
I'd like to have been a bit more to the left or right when composing this but there wasn't really anywhere else to go on the rock I was perched on. Maybe next time I'll be braver but when I can't see exactly where my bare foot might be headed in that water? I'm going to chicken out 58% of the time. Now you're probably thinking why chicken out this time? Dude! there were seals bobbing in the water a scant 20 feet away! Still not sure but the seals around here might be dangerous. You never know!! And besides they're kinda big and fast in real life, so much cuter (and safer) in the movies
