I spent a few days working up in San Luis Obispo, so I had a few opportunities to shoot some of the beautiful coast up that way. This is from Spyglass Park in Shell Beach.
With the dark rocks, this one really needs to be viewed large on black. Just click on the image.

This is a shot from Dinosaur Cave Park across the water to Point Sal which is around twenty miles as the crow flies. Not often is it this clear on the central coast of California.
This one is for Steph. Happy super belated birthday mon grincheux :)
As I was setting up for this (crouched behind my camera wearing shells none the less) a gentleman walked by and wanted to know what I was shooting. "Mermaids". So he turned quickly back towards the water with a hand shading his eyes while looking intently out to sea and in a surprised voice told me he hadn't seen any today.

Shell Beach is a little North of Pismo Beach. The area sits above the water on some cliffs that give a pretty good view of the Pacific Ocean. The rock features and tide pools offer a nice foreground for landscapes.
This was my second attempt at getting a nice sunset picture in the area. The previous night I tried at the Montana de Oro State Park. There weren't many clouds in the sky on either night, but the smoke from the L. A. area fires blew this direction and made for interesting color on the horizon.

3 nights in a row with no clouds, no fog, no nothin'. Then I remembered, those boring skies are perfect for astrophotography!
Matt Granz and I jumped in the car and just started driving north on 101 until it got dark. We made it to Sonoma County, a bit north of Bodega Bay, when it got too dark to see any more of the coastline, so we hunkered down at Shell Beach to look for our Milky Way shot.
With no moon and no city lights anywhere, it was plenty dark, oh and the tide was coming in fast, so we had to hop back a few times to keep from being lost at sea. A little unnerving because you cannot even see the waves that are about to crash until they are right there.
This is a 5-frame pano using the Pentax FA31/1.8 Limited. I shot the star field using f/2.2 for 80 seconds and then a 6 minute exposure for the foreground. In order to get 80 seconds without any star trailing, I used the Astrotracer feature on the Pentax O-GPS1, which directs movement of the camera sensor in sync with the Earth's rotation (using GPS). As this is a total night shot in the dark, you should view it on black in a darkish room for best results...let your eyes adjust first.

Brown pelicans gather on an offshore rock along California's Central Coast
Azure breakers crashing onto the pristine Pacific Ocean coastline at Shell beach, close to the town of Jenner. Jenner is a tiny town at the mouth of the Russian River located in Sonoma county, California.
This is a four second exposure through a 9-stop neutral density filter.

LISTLESS WAVE of LOW TIDE
Finding a new location it was a minus 1.2 foot low tide. A dry tropical storm was approaching from the south and the clouds were growing. For me it was a perfect time to enjoy the outdoors, the ocean and most important, to make an image. I have to acknowledge to very good friends, Stan who told me about Beachcomber (Stan, When I went there I remembered that I had been there before. Thank you). To Bob, who was my partner in crime that day and photo buddy who makes my images better when we photograph together and who also made the weather much better that day. Thanks for the clouds, Bob..!!!
Addendum:
This image is actually an HDR consisting of (3) images. A 4 min, 20 sec exposure, a 3 min, 17 sec exposure and a 2 min exposure. This allowed me to properly expose for the highlights and shadows. The tonal separation was too contrasty so the scene required this approach.

I'm fairly confident that this is the last of my photos from the Coral Beach on Skye. This was taken from the rocky outcrop at the end of the headland and it looks back over the beach toward the fog-shrouded mainland of Skye.

At one time during my college years, I lived within walking distance of this lovely park right at the side of the ocean. I spent many nights here just taking in the beautiful sight and contemplating my life, my future. :)

I almost never blend exposures or use HDR merging to process my photos but for this image I could not get it "right" any other way. As I almost never do this I was not sure how best to proceed. I ended up using a NIK software to make the HDR and finished it in PS6. I actually have a fairly large folder of images that need some sort of blend or HDR for dynamic range that need to be edited but I am not sure how I like this final result or if I will use the process again. Any thoughts, criticisms, or ideas would be greatly appreciated!

This is the brightest and largest moon since 1948 and you won't see another one until 2034. I got up at around 5:30 this morning when it was it's fullest and decided to try a shot as the moon set over Shell Beach. It was very cold but worth it. This is a composite of 2 shots.

Our dogs at Shell Beach during a January low tide. Lucky (black dog in the background) is ecstatic....she found a tennis ball to carry around.
