This small little guy (maybe two inches wide) was found in the Shell Beach tide pools. Those look like barnacles on him.

Clouds were forming beautifully, so I ran down to Shell Beach with high expectations. Lots of clouds, but NO color, hence the B/W.

Also known as The Straad, St Ninian’s Bay is another small bay on the west coast of Bute. St Ninian’s point is a spit of land that can become cut off with spring tides, but the Bay itself is protected by this promonotory. The Bay commands breathtaking views of Inchmarnock, and is home to St Ninian’s Chapel. The bay itself once supported a thriving fishing fleet and as such the beach is covered with a sand of white cockleshells.

FINALLY a good sunset in the Central Coast! This was actually a bit tough to process. The sky was on fire to the point it almost looked fake--I took DOWN saturation and vibrance.

2015 Update: This abandoned staircase has now been demolished, most likely due to safety issues. I confirmed reports of the staircases's demise during a recent trip to Pismo Beach to photograph a nearby minus tide. This newly processed image from my archives was processed to give it a vintage, soft lomo effect (named after Lomography, which originated with the look created by a cheap Russian plastic camera called a Lomo LC-A).

Lurking just behind the posh Ventana Grill in Pismo Beach, this long abandoned spiral staircase sits decaying alongside the beautiful Pacific coastal bluffs. It once served to transport beachcombers safely down to the ocean, but now appears to be the Central Coast version of the Leaning Tower of Pisa. The walkway that once connected this staircase to the bluffs has long since rotted away, but the leaning tower still beckons, harkening back to a once golden era.
For you pixel perspective peepers, yes, this stairwell is leaning and rather precarious. The only true access to this spiral staircase is via kayak. This image was taken with a Nikon D800 and a Nikkor 14-24mm f2.8 ultrawide angle lens, and is an HDR photograph comprised of bracketed RAW shots processed in Photomatix, Lightroom, Photoshop and with onOne Software's Perfect Effects.

Spray from crashing waves and a 160 second exposure combine to give off a glow around the rocks. ND10 filter and SEP used. Shell Beach, CA.
Shell Beach is a beach in the Shark Bay region of Western Australia, 45 kilometres south-east of Denham.
Situated on the northeastern side of the Taillefer Isthmus, it covers a 110 km long stretch of coast along the L'Haridon Bight. It is one of only two beaches in the world made entirely from shells.
The beach was named "Shell Beach" because of the great abundance of the shells of the cockle species Fragum erugatum. The seawater in the L'Haridon Bight has a high salinity due to both the geomorphology and local climate of the area. This high salinity has allowed the cockle to proliferate unchecked, since its natural predators have not adapted well to this environment.
The shells typically reach a depth of 7 to 10 metres. Over time, the shells have formed a limestone that is known as Coquina.
Before Shark Bay became a World Heritage Site, the limestone was mined and used for the construction of a number of buildings in the local town of Denham, Western Australia.

The beach "sand" here is composed of broken and ground shells, most of them consisting of the bleached skeletons of coralline algae from the nearby reef. The contrasting black rock is Jurassic basalt, raised up from the ocean floor. The island in the distance is Isay beyond which lies The Minch, the strait that separates the Inner and Outer Hebrides.
I'm slowly returning to the dirty habit of posting photos on Flickr. I've realized that my work will never amount to much, when compared to all of the amazing and talented photographers on here. I'll never be published. I'll never make a dime. I've accepted that fact. But, I'll continue to take photos, capture life, and continue to engage in the one hobby that I love, the art of photography. I'll continue to share scenes of the wonder that is planet earth with this community. They may not be the best photos out there, but they are submitted from the heart. Love the one you're with. I had to stop to take a picture of this Sharp-shinned Hawk in Shell Beach. 90% crop, because I didn't have my favorite lens with me.

So I've been wanting to get a shot of the full moon setting over the ocean in Shell Beach since the late 80s but never can seem to drag myself out of bed that early and it is usually really cold there before the sun comes up.
This morning I had to take my step-son to the airport to catch a flight to Phoenix. On the way, I noticed the full moon over the ocean. It was distorted by the Alamo fire and blood red but I thought "now's my chance." So as soon as I dropped him off, I rushed over to Shell Beach and set up.
This was, unfortunately, the best shot I could get with all the smoke in the air but I still like it.

I meant to post this yesterday, my 1 year Flickr/HDR "birthday", but I was finishing work shots. I've been sitting on this forever and mixed everything I like to create this insanely, purposely overcooked image--long exposure, fake tilt shift, HDR, glow, ridiculous amount of vignetting, graffiti and coast.
