Inspired by Alice Cahill's image of sand trees, I searched for a similar pattern during a recent low tide at Shell Beach.
Natures patterns continue to amaze me.

If you've seen any of the recent stuff I've been doing it's no shock I've gotten pretty obsessed with long exposures and filters. I've never really thought about going HDR with them, so here's the first of a ton to come.

Juvenile Black-crowned Night Heron, Shell Beach, California. Even though I took this picture in June, there must have been at least one more crop of nestlings after that, since I went there yesterday (August 24) and found a couple of juveniles at approximately the same stage of development (but much more shy) hiding in the same trees, and making themselves very scarce whenever they saw me looking at them. I couldn't get any shots yesterday.

Ahhhh COLOR and HDRs are back in my life! Having such a new found respect for B&W photography still expect a ton from me, but it's a nice feeling to end such a fun month of learning with a sunset I've been sitting on for a long time. This is 5 long exposures meshed together into an HDR image.

Thanks again for all the support during my B&W October Project..talk about fun going full force for a month on such a different photographic discipline. Taken post sunset last week at Shell Beach CA. I did some ridiculously long exposures with the ND 110. This is my first attempt at layering with OnOne Perfect Layers and I'm very excited.
*If you saw the last post ... haha couldn't keep it up very long.

Low tide exposed the rocky reefs at Shell Beach north of Pismo, California, a slippery place to hike and beware of the higher tiders. A great place for tidepool life to gather and stick to the craggy surfaces. You won't find many shells here but its an amazing area to explore.
Actually not a ship wreck at all, just a wreck of a ship.
Native Americans and then our more modern culture have shucked oysters, clams and abalone at this location beside the bay and shells have piled up over the centuries. Locals drag boats onto the shell-strewn shore for easy access to the bay; most of these vessels are worn and weary looking. And you wouldn't want to stroll on this beach bare-foot.
I love the casual attitude of these boat people and the manner in which they seemingly toss their boats ashore after each use where they will remain until the next outing.

Shells and fragments of them make up this beach on Shell Key across the channel from Pass-A-Grille, Florida. Shell Key is a beautiful, natural, hotel and road free, barrier Island that is protected as a County Nature preserve.
Longhorn cowfishes, Lactoria cornuta (Linnaeus, 1758), also known as long-horns, longhorned, long-horned cowfishes, horned boxfishes or trunkfishs, are a type of boxfish in the Ostraciidi family (~25 species known) and are easily identified by their rather comical appearance and two pairs of long horns, like those of a cow or bull, located on their heads and below their tails. Their horns are thought to have evolved because they make the fish hard to swallow for most predators. Their horns actually break off quite often but they regrow them within a few months. Longhorn cowfishes are shy fishes and grow up to 46 cm in length, their mouths are subterminal (on the underside of their head) and they have prominent lips. Source: marinebio.org/species.asp?id=1463

This looks different from most of my landscape film shots because it is one of the few times I used Kodak. This Ektachrome is great for people shots, but not as ideal in my opinion as Velvia is for scenes like this.

Another shot of the infamous Pismo Beach Stairway to Nowhere, taken in March 2015. This decaying gem, which once transported happy beachcombers safely down the steep rugged cliffs to a picturesque cove, is a source of fond memories for locals.
Despite rumors of its demise, I am happy to report that the staircase still stands in all its glory, although plans have been proposed for its partial demolition and restoration. In honor of one of my favorite James Bond movies, I titled the image You Only Live Twice, as it seemed rather appropriate.
According to newspaper articles, Noreen Martin, owner of Martin Resorts, has applied for a coastal development permit to repair and reconstruct the staircase, which can only be accessed via kayak or brave souls who dare swim to the beach. Martin's plans include preserving the existing staircase core and constructing a new spiral staircase around it.
In addition, the existing seawall would be restored and a new pedestrian bridge would be built from the Ventana Grill – located on hotel row just above the staircase – down to the stairs. For those of you who are interested in viewing or photographing the original staircase, I would recommend a timely visit to the Ventana Grill in Pismo Beach before the restoration work commences.

The land for the memorial site was donated by the Doullut family in memory of Lynn Gagnon, an educator and environmentalist who died several years before Katrina and had fought for the closure of the MR-GO, which 10 years ago was blamed for shotgunning a wall of water into the parish and the Lower 9th Ward, destroying everything in its path. Cross, a large stainless steel cross bearing the face of Jesus designed by Arabi welder and fabricator Vincent LaBruzzo Sr., stands a few feet off shore.
In less than 30 minutes the sky went from solid cloud cover to completely clear. By the time the sun hit the horizon there was only a thin strip of clouds sitting on the horizon. I took this during the transition.
With fog all around Pismo and Shell Beach on 9/19/10, was still clear here with a thin but heavy marine layer at the horizon. Three five-shot bracketed HDr shots stitch in PS. A MUST view on black.
One of my first pictures of the new year. Had the rare occasion of having a beach to myself on this night. A wonderful sunset that enveloped the land and sea in a color somewhere between pink and gold, a color there is no name for. Kept the composition simple within the landscape. Wanted reflections of color on the wet sand and kept the point of Avila in clear view between the bend in the larger rocks. Shot this angle for about 20 minutes before moving toward another. A great start for 2014.

I just dropped off images for a menu shoot I've been working on for a little while now and needed a change of pace. This was actually a gorgeous sunset at the end of my block in Pismo Beach CA but I still wasn't very amped on the image--thought I'd put it through Silver Efex Pro as I learn the software a bit more--damn it's awesome.
