I recorded this short video to show a friend my pre-WWII gramophone and post-WWII record player. Song playing is Fats Waller's 'Shortenin' Bread'. 'Change the needle' and 'put a sock in it' are terms from the gramophone era. You change the needle for every record spun/played. There is no volume control on gramophones, so you put a sock in to muffle the volume. Check out the Gramophone Emporium in Edinburgh or their site www.rare78s.com/

The Liberon lemon shellac flakes I had were pretty waxy - this works well.
Sort of self evident - but keep pouring the fresh onto the old wax - which acts as its own filter ( first bit through needed to go through again )
Just one layer of kitchen roll - nothing fancy !

...and she'll understand the joke. Here's a photo of an almost whole mica sheet.
The mica sheet above has a shellac binder. The binder binds the mica (the rock) pieces together. The mica is a white color. The shellac gives it that amber shade.
Bought a big pile of old 78's from the boot sale today. Lots of Harry Bidgood and a couple of novelty songs that I will slowly add to the audio blog.
