∎ Lost 1930s Delta Gospel-Blues Recordings – Sin, Faith & Poverty (Restored Shellac Mono)

“Lost 1930s Delta Gospel-Blues Recordings” is a dust-scarred archive of sin, faith, and poverty pulled from fragile shellac discs nearly lost to time.

These are the voices of field preachers, wandering singers, and worn-down souls who carried their prayers and their sins in the same breath — raw hymns born from hunger, drought, and the hard truth of Southern life.

Restored from brittle mono shellac with crackle, wind grit, and trembling vocals, these recordings capture the spiritual struggle of the Depression-era Delta:

songs sung on porches, in broken churches, by people who had nothing except a voice, a guitar, and a plea for mercy.

Fans of Delta gospel-blues, historical field recordings, Depression-era archives, spiritual roots music, and anyone drawn to the haunting simplicity of 1930s Southern sound.

Shellac has a unique manufacturing process. It's derived from a resin secreted by insects native to forests in Thailand and India. The secretion is scraped from the bark of trees and then processed to form small, light-brown, or orange flakes. The flakes are mixed with alcohol to create a finish.

Dad and I just built up his new bike, a Soma Double Cross.

We started with the bare frame, and it went together fairly seamlessly. The trickiest part was installing the fenders, but even that wasn’t too bad. Rides like a dream. Smooth, relaxed, but handles very well and is actually quite fast. The drivetrain all works flawlessly, and the bar ends are actually quite nice after using STI’s for so long. Absolutely love the Nitto Albatross bars. And these tires are incredible, the smoothest fastest rolling tires I’ve used to date! My dad chose every single part, so it is truly HIS bike!

I'm not so sure about going any further.

Shellac @ the Varsity Theater, Minneapolis, MN - June 25th, 2009

Not my best shots to be honest... well, as you can see!

From near the very end of their set, where like in the Simpson's opening credits a spoof variation occurs. Steve and Bob had already removed the bass drum and cymbols and are about to remove the snare and stool. Todd was left standing without a kit to hit, placed his drumsticks in his pockets and was then turned upside down and carried off stage.

With the live set disassembled, they already had the last word on whether there'd be an encore.

De-Waxed Shellac mixed using 99.9% alcohol and shellac flakes, I use this as both a sanding sealer and finish.

I spent more of yesterday and today woodturning than birdwatching. Last summer I brought home a big load of pretty funky birch from what must have been a very large tree. It was cut down because it was unsound and then left to decay for many years before the landowner posted it for free on craigslist. It is good and dry and very spalted, but also very, very unstable, as you can see above. I had to fill a lot of cracks and finish the outside in shellac to hold it together, but after a good deal of labor I'm pleased with the result. Natural edge birch vase, outside finished in shellac, inside in beeswax and lemon oil. Backyard Olympia.

365 Day 262. Gramophone porn...sorry, But this is the newest addition to my collection, Columbia Grafanola No. 204e..playing a bit of Fats Waller...Mmm.

Steve Albini's band Shellac

Albini is a very famous producer(NIrvana.etc)

Shellac is a his own band after Big Black broke up.

this photo took at Shibuya.

Velox blue bar tape after a few coats of blonde shellac. Shellac seems less common on a "velo de course" but, I like the feel and added weather resistance...in addition to the darkened colour.

Sound quality just gets better and better. Pop music just gets worse and worse!

I still play shellac, 78's and 45's and I still have my first vinyl album

no, it's not a vinyl, it's even older than that!

Shellac - Primavera Sound , closing at Apolo

I'm not a *huge* fan of Shellac..I find their lyrics pretty intelligent and no one can deny what Steve Albini has done for the music industry. But, honestly, I just enjoy watching Todd Trainer drum.
