SHADOW OF THE COLOSSUS™_20181002203434

Shanxi (and neighboring Shaanxi) are known throughout the country for their shadow puppets. These four are the main characters from "Journey to the West," which is one of the 4 classical Chinese novels. Seen at a store on Nan Dajie in ancient Pingyao.

Pingyao is considered one of China's best-preserved ancient walled towns. (From my limited travels around China, I wholeheartedly concur.)

Pingyao's history goes back about 2,700 years. Located about 90 km (55 miles) south of Taiyuan in Shanxi (山西) province, modern-day Pingyao has around 450,000 residents. The ancient town, is enclosed within a stone wall, 10 meters (31 feet) high and slightly more than 6 kilometers (3.6 miles) with 6 gates: north, lower east, upper east, south, upper west, and lower west, that was built in 1370.

Within these walls live 50,000 people. Also to be found are a number of religious institutions including temples - the Confucian temple with the oldest surviving building in Pingyao (Dacheng Hall from 1163 A.D.), the Taoist City God Temple, Taoist Qingxu Guan (temple), and a Catholic church, among others.

Besides the various religious sites, there are museums to the banking industry such as the Rishengchang Museum. (The first draft bank in China was located here in Pingyao), a few art museums, and -- centrally located -- a city tower on Nan Dajie.

Pingyao also has many guesthouses (I chose Harmony Guesthouse on Nan Dajie near the south gate and highly recommend it to anyone who goes to Pingyao), restaurants (western and local Pingyao cuisine), teahouses, bars, massage parlors, and souvenir shops.

By day, the panoramic view of Pingyao is slightly reminiscent of the imperial city scenes at the beginning of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (perhaps with a creative imagination). As evening comes, the red lanterns begin to dominate the landscape. Alleys, doorways, the main roads, and courtyards all find themselves awash in a red glow.

In short, Pingyao has plenty to offer by day or night. These images are just a small reflection, through my eyes, of Pingyao's charms.

It´s not possible to make a picture in this night, without someone intentionally running in the camera.

don't put the camera in front of your face, try to find an interesting angle.

And in the midst of it the photographer

Hell of a day today, not least of which involved a trip to the walk-in clinic to have the baby's bleeding diaper rash tended to, so this is my best effort for the day. I was thinking of the theme of the week of shadow play when I took it.

Was debating between taking it with some of the bike showing and not. What do you think?

Backstage action: The puppeteers lit lamps, play music, sing songs and speak dialogues for the shadow puppets which dance in front of the transclucent white screen. A traditional shadow puppet performance from Kerala is called Tolpavakoothu. Leather-made puppets are placed in front of a white screen, while being lit by lamps placed in a row on the other side of the screen. Musicians and puppeteers stand backstage and maneouver the puppets with the aid of sticks attached to the slim leather figures.

This was taken after work. I saw this guy working in a ditch surrounded by a green mesh portable fence. He was using his hoe. I could tell by his movement and the hoe appearing on the top of the fence with each strike. His white hat was the only thing visible throughout. His body makes for a nice shadow. It looks like a "fist". The hat's contrast with the green and blackness of the shadow make this nice.

This is Shadow the second of three pets that I own.. He recently passed away November 28, 2017 at 16 years and 3 months old.. My first pet Roscoe passed away 1 year ago at the age of 16 years 10 months and 5 days so they both lived to an old age and I find it interesting that they both passed away at 16 years. This pet was so loving and he has the name of Shadow because he followed me every step that I would make there he was. Even his last months he could barely get around he would follow me to no end! I used to carry him up and down the stairs just to save his hips because he had developed arthritis in them so I took care of him to the end of his life and he is buried in my back yard along with Roscoe and I am glad to have them close by. It is an experience when you watch you pets grow from from a puppy to a full grown dog to a much older version of themselves but it is so rewarding! They were not really ill up until they got into their old age and that was a blessing.he will be missed very much especially his always laying by my side. Both of my pets have brought me the greatest joy and I am so thankful for the both of them. Now it's just me and my cat Tiger unless I make the decision to have more pets and he to is a great joy!

A man seem to be quite anxious about his shadow. Actually he got out of a room and the light outside was very white and bright, so he made a face and just turns the head to protect his eyes.
