One evening in Manhattan, we were out for a walk along the Highline Park. As always, I was carrying a camera. (Yes, I think I drive my family crazy that way.) I’ve been there a number of times, and I’m usually intrigued by the buildings that line this park — their textures, their windows and rooftops, the glimpses of what goes on in them as the life of the park moves past. I think I was trying to think of a way to photograph the texture of this concrete wall when I came upon this bit of light coming across the walkway and casting shadows.

It is hard to recall too many more specifics of the scene, though I have a series of perhaps a half dozen or more photographs, made as various people moved through the lower part of the scene or, more accurately, their vague shadows moved through the scene. When people ask what sort of camera I carry to places like this, my answer is that it is usually a small camera equipped with small prime lenses. This photograph perhaps illustrates why that is. I can always have such a camera with me, I can use it quickly and without much fuss, and it even works in very low light.

A friend of my wife from out of State was visiting Chicago on business and pressed for time, she's only able to squeeze in 2 hours to see the city. No problem, I said, let's climb the Hancock. I did not prepare much, brought just the camera and a lens, not even a tripod. I know it will be the same old shots that I've seen before. I find these shadows reflecting on Lake Michigan somehow unique. Well, never say never to a very popular spot for photographers. Unless it's The Bean, lol.

The obvious next move was to the S&C for 6K05 and the logs so a trip over to Kirkby Stephen was made. Needn’t have bothered; they were both cancelled. So a dash back to the WCML when this appeared to be running early, even though we knew the consist wasn’t great. It got duly looped at Tebay and by the time it appeared the shadows were lengthening. Still it was worth it for that backdrop.

I meant to photograph the way the shadows from the window contrasted with the lines of the dog's crate. Then the dog stepped into the room, and his shadow into the picture.

The sun threw a shadow on my house of my neighbour's chimney. The effect was to create a "Shadow Man" ;at least that's what it "said" to me. Somewhat armless, but a nod to Venus de Milo just to mix up the genders and to make the confusion complete.
