Serving as the official kickoff of the Fall 2013 semester, the College of DuPage Office of Student Life hosted several events as part of Chaparral Days. Events included games, music, giveaways, free food, and information sessions. Chaparral Days events promote student interaction and engagement.

Bangladeshi engineers serving with the United Nations Mission in South Sudan were awarded the UN Medal for their service and sacrifice. The 260-strong engineering contingent were the first to be deployed as part of the Regional Protection Force, mandated by the UN Security Council. In the past year, they have carried out a number of major reconstruction projects over the past year, rehabilitating roads, building bases, servicing water points and even repairing football grounds for young sports fans in Juba. At a ceremony in the capital Juba today, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General acknowledged their professionalism, integrity and dedication to duty. The contingent also remembered the tragic loss of their fellow fallen peacekeeper Lieutenant Commander Ashraf Siddiqui who was killed by armed gunmen while accompanying a humanitarian convoy in June.

Down at the beach we spotted a new species for us, a moon snail. I saw his head(?) peaking up from the sand and Sherri helped me pull it out of the sand once I had dug around it to identify that it was a snail and not a clam. The amazing part wasn't the size, you can see the scale here in her hand, but that it completely went into it's shell after we took some pictures of it.
