This visit was part of a press trip I âattended' on behalf of Visit Aberdeen for FoodFest15 (www.foodfest15.com). FoodFest15 is Aberdeenshireâs take on 'The Year Of Food & Drink Scotlandâ 2015 - and if itâs anything like the experience I had, a grand old time it shall be for anyone who goes. It runs all the way through January to December, though I only showed up for a few days at the end of June. As far as Iâm concerned, itâs ALWAYS the year of food and drink - I donât care where I am, or what year it is. Anyway, I shall now talk about the place you can see before you...
Buchanans Bistro at Woodend Barn describes itself as "a collective of self taught cooks who aspire to create something a little different from the norm". It's hard to pin down exactly *what* they are, but whatever you want to call Buchanans, there's a LOT of cool stuff happening down there. There's an onsite home brewery (in the kitchen) - where chef brews an ever evolving selection of craft beers (some using some very unusual yeast strains - such as sourdough starters). Then there's the smokehouse where they cure and smoke fish, fowl, oil, vegetable, scallops, etc. And of course there are the breads - which Buchanans are probably best known for! Many varieties (many of them rare and unusual), all baked on site each day.
As for the food at the restaurant? Mostly salad and vegetarian options (though there's some damn good fish), the vibe is very 'family friendly' (I saw many families in my short time there!). There's also a pretty active live music schedule, with many local musicians setting up in the corner for informal live music - no stage dividing them from the audience and all that. Thereâs also a secondhand book store, with the books kinda equally distributed all about the bistro. Book bistro. They grow lots of their own food onsite, and are very, very involved in sustainability and fair trade. Itâs great to see.
As for the decor and the feel of the place, there's lots of floor to ceiling windows allowing you to enjoy the views of the surrounding countryside and the massive garden - it feels spacious and clean. Speaking of massive gardens, said garden that overlaps into a field which makes it feel like an almost infinitely large garden. When I was there, said infinite garden was home to a fish themed art exhibition, a few hundred locals had contributed to it! I think the individual fishes were made during textile classes, which I believe are also held at Woodend Barn (where there is also a theatre and probably more wondrous arts related things). I received an email from my local outdoor outfitter store that they were having a sale on wooden hangers. 50 cents each, 5 for $2.25 or 50 for $20. WHAT A GREAT DEAL. Time to replace those plastic ones I hate and that have been breaking. I love finding secondhand bargains!

Saw this glass in a secondhand shop and was surprised that it was from Arcopal! Did they produce more of these glasses?
My people expect this of me, darling... My mum was very taken by this outfit because it's so femme. And what a bargain it was too. Three dollars from a one dollar bin at a Hari Krishna temple in San Diego. We were looking for the restaurant, which was closed, but the shop was open. I got three outfits.
I took some books I was wanting rid of to our local second-hand bookstore. They took nearly everything I had and I wound up with these fun books and the stencil for only $3.10. I'm not sure if the science book is Chinese or Japanese, but it has some great diagrams. I'm looking forward to using it in collages. The open book is A Guide to Making Decorated Papers by Anne Chambers. I hope it will motivate me to try some of her papers. The block print ones look especially enticing.
One of my favorite bookstores, which closed in 2008 is now open again. The combination of books and a nice cafe makes this a great place to hangout in the Greenwood neighborhood of Seattle
