Every year, the first Sunday of September,
the Historical Regatta
comes back in Venice, the most traditional among the venetian events, which took place for the first time the 10th of January 1315 under the rule of the doge Giovanni Soranzo.
The sumptuous event, organized in the Serenissima times to celebrate the military victories or to honour the foreign dignitaries, today is made up of two different parts: the historical parade and the rowing boat races.
The Historical Regatta starts out with the colourful procession on water, formed by the Bissone, the Bucintoro and the boats of the venetian rowing clubs; the event commemorates the Queen of Cyprus, Caterina Cornaro, coming to Venice, which marked the beginning of the Serenissima rule over the Mediterranean islands. The historical parade has now just a picturesque importance, memory of the distant economical and political greatness of Venice on the seas, while the regattas represent still today the climax of the agonistic season in the world of the rowing alla veneta: winning that day for the rowers means to become a part of the history of this sport and, to a certain extent, of Venice.
...
The last technical note is about the Venice Historical Regatta route; it goes from Riva degli Schiavoni, where the start is, to Punta della Salute where, after the cavata (the start sprint), the public waits impatiently for the first boat entering the Grand Canal, since often that will be the winning one. Then (except for the race on pupparini ending up in front of Ca´ Foscari) the boats go up the Canal Grande to the train station where the turning pole is, then they go back towards the finish line in front of the Machina (the floating stage reserved to authorities and built for this occasion on the Grand Canal in front of Ca´ Foscari). When the various usual accusations of incorrectness are over, in front of the Machina the prize-giving ceremony takes place.

The program of the Venice Regatta 2016, start time at 4.00pm, opens with the expected Historical parade, one of the most anticipated moments of this intense day especially for tourists, eager to take part in a fascinating evocation of the glory and power of the ancient Republic of Venice. The extraordinary water parade formed by traditional colourful boats, some of which are used only in these particular events, with people in costume who interpret the upper echelon of the Venice Judiciary – the Doge and the Duchess - is a faithful reconstruction of the royal reception given to Catherine Cornaro, Queen of Cyprus, on her arrival in Venice in 1489, after her abdication in favour of the Republic.
The Venice regattas 2016 that follow the parade of historic boats are considered the most important event of the entire Venetian rowing season and the winners are held in high regard by the practitioners of this fascinating discipline. The Venetian rowing is a special technique of rowing practices in the lagoon of Venice and the surrounding areas because of the peculiarities of the environment, which requires vessels that can be easily maneuvered and a stroke that allows one to easily monitor the seabed to avoid the numerous shoals and the low sandy coasts.
Those wishing to attend the event, take note of the 2016 Venice regatta route! The Grand Canal is reconfirmed as the undisputed stage of this event for both the historical parade and for the following rowing competitions; the finish point - Ca ' Foscari - coincide for both events, while the starting point varies depending on the rowing competition - St Mark's Bay or Castello Gardens.

In 1994, the current railroad bridge was opened, a double steel drawbridge with a clearance of 7 meters. This bridge is opened only at night, so that train traffic is not hindered by shipping during the day. This bridge was designed by railroad architect ir. J. Bak .
The former Van Nelle Factory (Dutch: Van Nellefabriek) on the Schie river in Rotterdam, is considered a prime example of the International Style (see also Constructivism). It has been a designated World Heritage Site since 2014.
The buildings were designed by architect Leendert van der Vlugt from the Brinkman & Van der Vlugt office in cooperation with civil engineer J.G. Wiebenga, at that time a specialist for constructions in reinforced concrete, and built between 1925 and 1931. It is an example of Nieuwe Bouwen, modern architecture in the Netherlands.
In the 20th century it was a factory, processing coffee, tea and tobacco and later on additional chewing gum, cigarettes, instant pudding and rice. The operation stopped in 1996. Currently it houses a wide variety of new media and design companies and is known as the Van Nelle Design Factory ("Van Nelle Ontwerpfabriek" in Dutch).

I'm busy! I bought a second D90 body today, plus the BEST DX ultra wide angle lens there is on earth: the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8, it's so fast, it's so wide, it's so amazing it's like totally unbelievable. More soon! At the moment I'm hunting for a good second hand D300(s). Anyone?

While it started to rain I took a few shot towards the Van Nelle Factory - a fantastic architectural monument of design - no time to set up a tripod or something, standing between the weed.
*Just* in time to catch the sinking sun. A monumental sky like I never saw one. Majestic!
You probably say it looks over the top, but in fact it was even more over the top *for real*. Couldn't even do it justice. ;-) Got totally soaked within 5 minutes after taking these shots, but so glad I witnessed this spectacular mixture of storm and sunset.
This was the magical night trilogy, how about a sequel!? ;-) Halfway catching up!
THX for viewing folks! Faves and comments are always welcome! Have a nice day.

The Delfshaven Factory has a rich past. It is located in a historic building in Rotterdam Delfshaven.
The factory complex of the former 'Roeloff's desteaming facility, steam dyeing and chemical laundry NV' on the Mathenesserdijk in Delfshaven has been completed in various construction phases. Roeloff's established itself at the location in 1892, and the factory was greatly expanded, especially from 1926 onwards. The factory is part of historic Delfshaven, which was designated as a Protected Cityscape in 1991. The factory complex with its chimney is a defining element on the Schie, prominently visible from the Lage Erfbrug.
Mathenesserdijk Rotterdam
The Delfshaven Factory is one of the most striking factory buildings in Rotterdam and has been transformed since 2011 into a collective building for small companies, independent entrepreneurs and idiosyncratic freelancers. De Fabriek opened its new doors at the end of 2012.
The Factory is one of those buildings where you wish the walls could speak, its history is so rich. In 120 years it transformed from a 'steam facility' (laundry and dye house) into a squat and cultural breeding ground. What was known for years as 'that dilapidated factory' on the Mathenesserdijk has been the eye-catcher of the Delfshaven district since October 2012.
The two new bridges over the Delfs Havense Schie are ready only the tracks have to be lead.
Start of the theater season in the local theater, situated near the river Schie (hence the name...). On this afternoon upcoming performances for children stood central. This happened in a 'mirror tent' which was erected on the main stage of the theater, especially for this event.
In the main hall a carousel and several circus acts tried to keep the young (and old) customer satisfied.
The former Van Nelle Factory (Dutch: Van Nellefabriek) on the Schie river in Rotterdam, is considered a prime example of the International Style.
Happy Fence Friday!
In front of the penitentiary institution (PI) on the Schie is a striking work of art with the German title Schöne gelbe Mauer made by artist Alfred Eikelenboom. Eikelenboom mainly made monumental eye-catchers with references to sculpture and architecture, often in striking colors and a (coated) skin that is reminiscent of plastic. Abstract patterns with circles often play a leading role, as is the case here. With curves, rectangles and perforations, this is an unyielding wall, just like the wall of the penitentiary behind it. Eikelenboom was commissioned to build the prison and the work was designed on the basis of the National Percentage Scheme. A striking image, but the building behind it is just as striking because of its orange and blue walls, making it a fitting whole and building and image forming a two-unit.

Two weeks to go... first exhibition. :)
Busy, busy, terribly busy with all the preparations - all fun though! Sorry for the neglect, I'll be back!
June 2012
Tired and not *very* inspired! It was a split second decision - jumping off the bike when entering the scene - to shoot it with a ND110 filter, just in time... 30 seconds. Have a nice weekend. :)

A view on the river Schie in Rotterdam, Delfshaven borough. The light was beautiful early in the morning on a chilly winter's day!
René (stranger 80)
I was allowed to take a walk “Poetry along the Schie” where we walked along all kinds of poems on, on or near the bridges over the Schie. One of the people who participates in the project is René. He has lived in the Spangen district in Rotterdam for years and has always opposed the deterioration of the district. Together with others he has taken the initiative to place art in the neighborhood in order to beautify the neighborhood. He succeeded, there are now many memorial plaques in the district. There are even lines of poetry between the tram rails and on the roofs of the Mathenesserdijk. The deterioration has disappeared and the residents are proud of their neighborhood again. René is very enthusiastic and proudly shows all kinds of art. In this photo he reads a poem written by himself.
This is the 80th photo of my second round of the # 100stangers project.
Find out more about the project and see pictures taken by other photographers at the
www.flickr.com/groups/100strangers/
And can also be found on
Delfshavenseweg, Overschie, Rotterdam in the morning.
The boat (coming towards us) literally rammed the old bridge while passing through... standard practice I guess, nobody gave a shout...
