The former Van Nelle Factory (Dutch: Van Nellefabriek) on the Schie river in Rotterdam, is an important historic industrial building in the world.

The buildings were designed by architect Leendert van der Vlugt from the Brinkman & Van der Vlugt office in cooperation with civil engineer J.G. Wiebenga, at that time a specialist for constructions in reinforced concrete, and built between 1925 and 1931. It is an example of Nieuwe Bouwen, modern architecture in the Netherlands.

In the 20th century it was a factory, processing coffee, tea and tobacco and later on additional chewing gum, cigarettes, instant pudding and rice. Currently it houses a wide variety of new media and design companies and is known as the Van Nelle Design Factory ("Van Nelle Ontwerpfabriek" in Dutch). Some of the areas are used for meetings, conventions and events.

The Van Nelle Factory shows the influence of Russian constructivism.

The Van Nelle Factory is a Dutch national monument (Rijksmonument) and is on the list of sites under consideration for the status of UNESCO World Heritage Site (Tentative list). The Justification of Outstanding Universal Value will be presented 2013 to the UNESCO World Heritage Committee.

Delft 2020

_____________

I happened to drive through this place last summer after my visit to Land Art Delft and got intrigued by this white building along the street with its completely sloping facade and the little picturesque bridge. After my excursion to Amsterdam in April, I made a small detour on the way back to stop there this time and take some pics.

Geschiedenis Landgoed De Tempel

History Estate The Temple

The first mention of the house De Tempel dates from 1485 when Gillis van Cralingen, lord of Wassenaer, lent his nephew Jan van Cralingen the craft Sluipwijk and the homestead De Tempel. The name De Tempel probably derives from the medieval 'temple'. A 'temple' was an object that was used to keep a sluice, in this case in the Schie, open, so that water could pass through.

Along the Schie and Trekvaarten

The estate is located on the Schie, an important watercourse with a rich history. In the Middle Ages it was an important place for trade and in the Golden Age it grew into an important barge junction. The barge canal, also known as the intercity of the Golden Age, played an indispensable role in the transport of people and goods.

Eric Gude, a Dutch specialist in the conversion of former industrial sites, planned and organized this change of use for the Van Nelle factory in 1997 and introduced Wessel De Jonge, an authority on the renovation of modern architecture in 1999, to coordinate the overall renovation, which began in the year 2000.

The Ferry House

Overschie has long been a junction of waterways. This is where the three Schies (the original Schiedamse Schie, the Rotterdam and the Delfhavense Schie) come together and before the railways started to play an important role in transport, there was heavy shipping traffic here.

In the photo we see the ferry house on the Schie; this is right opposite the place where the Rotterdamse Schie ends in the original Schie. Many ships on inland waters were "hunted", i.e. pulled by a horse walking along a canal along a towpath. If the skipper was too poor for a horse, his wife or himself pulled the ship.

Where the towpath along the Rotterdam Schie ended, the horse had to be transferred by ferry to the other side of the Schie where the towpath to Delft continued. That is why the ferry house is also located here.

At the ferry house there are also a few roller poles, vertical poles that had to ensure that the rope used to pull a ship did not catch on objects on the shore in a bend.

Start of the theater season in the local theater, situated near the river Schie (hence the name...). On this afternoon upcoming performances for children stood central. This happened in a 'mirror tent' which was erected on the main stage of the theater, especially for this event.

In the main hall a carousel and several circus acts tried to keep the young (and old) customer satisfied.

A very interesting and beautiful building to photograph. This has been a familiar building to me since childhood. Press the 'L' key for the magnification.

Wikipedia:: In 1916, the Van Nelle company bought a site along the Schie in the former municipality of Overschie. The factory was built here between 1927 and 1930 under the direction of Cees van der Leeuw by the architects Johannes Brinkman and Leendert van der Vlugt.

The former Van Nelle factory on the Delfshavense Schie in Rotterdam is considered the most important industrial monument in The Netherlands. This has also been recognized worldwide as such, when it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in June 2014. The former factory of the Van Nelle company, designed by Leendert van der Vlugt of the architectural firm Brinkman & Van der Vlugt in collaboration with constructor Jan Wiebenga, is a textbook example of the new way of building.

The Van Nelle factory now houses a variety of companies. In addition, a number of rooms are used for meetings, conferences and events. The complex is not freely accessible for tourist visitors, groups can visit the building with a guide. Since 2017, a visitor center with an exhibition has been set up.

Warmond is situated on a lake system called Kagerplassen and has several marinas which make it a popular recreational area for boating and other water sports. It is an area of water surrounded by land and many mills. There are various activities available. In the vicinity are many water sports. You can rent boats and canoes and fishing rods are available. The Zwanburgermolen mill lies in the Green Heart in the province of Zuid-Holland. It is located along a dike. The mill is built in 1805 to replace an earlier windmill. The mill has been in operation until 1959 and then sold to the Rijnland Molen foundation. Wilde Weide is a traditional, small-production Dutch Boerenkaas farmhouse Gouda, and is one of those rare finds that clears the oft-tarnished reputation of its class. It is produced on a small farm on this remote lake island of Zwanburgerpolder. The cheeses are made of organic milk from a herd of 50 Montbelliard cows that graze year-round in the island’s pastures. You can only visit the Zwanburgerpolder by taking the boat de heere Schouten.

The historic Zwanburgermolen windmill located in the rural landscape of Gemeente Kaag en Braassem, South Holland, Netherlands. The Rijnland exquisite nature surroundings form a great area for walking and cycling. A day long hike along the yellow rapeseed does lead you through the gorgeous windmill complex of Rijnland. The extensive peat landscape forms one of Holland’s most beautiful hiking spots. You can follow one of the well-maintained bike roads or footpaths, but also venture off-track for an adventurous walk in the wild. During this lovely trip, you will be surrounded by typical Dutch nature and cultural landscape that you won’t soon forget…

Spring has started early this year, with temperatures of 15 °C during the day but still cold evenings and nights. Combined with a high air humidity, this leads to foggy mornings, especially above and around areas with water, like here at the Schie canal in Delft.

On the other bank, the Eastern Gate emerges out of the mist. It is the only tower of the town wall that still stands nowadays and dates from around 1400.

By a lucky coincidence, a ship was passing when I was making shots there, adding a third layer of depth to the photo.
