The Schiedam mills in the city centre also owe their existence to the jenever past: the grain was ground here for the burners. Unique for the Netherlands is that the mills are all within walking distance. Anyone wishing to experience mill life can visit De Walvisch. Every week the miller shows how the mill turns and grinds in the grain loft. You have a magnificent view of the other mills in Schiedam from the wooden balcony circling the mill.

The port of Schiedam forms part of the Port of Rotterdam. The river Schie, which flows into the Maas, winds its way straight through the city. In the ports Lange Haven and Florynhaven are special jetties for sailing enthusiasts. It’s also possible to take a trip over the canals of Schiedam in an electric boat.

Schie is the name for four waterways in the area of Overschie, South Holland, the Netherlands. There are the Delftse Schie, the Delfshavense Schie, the Rotterdamse Schie and the Schiedamse Schie. The existence of these four streams is the result of medieval rivalry among the cities of Delft, Rotterdam, and Schiedam for toll rights.

In 1903, a dike broke near Kandelaar, nearly draining the entire Schie into the low-lying surrounding fields.

In 1933, the Coolhaven (Cool harbor) was completed that provided a new and better connection between the Delfshavense Schie and the Nieuwe Maas, reducing the shipping on the other Schie canals.

After the bombardment of Rotterdam at the beginning of World War II, the rubble of the ruined city was used to backfill the Rotterdamse Schie. Only a small section at Overschie remains of the Rotterdamse Schie.

In 1989, the Delftse Schie between Delft and Rotterdam was transferred from municipal to provincial jurisdiction.

The Delfshavense Schie is now the main shipping connection between the Delftse Schie and Nieuwe Maas. Furthermore, it is also used for water management. On the other hand, the Rotterdamse Schie is mostly infilled and the Schiedamse Schie is little used for boating.

Historic Delfshaven

This picturesque marina is one of the few parts of the old city that survived the bombing of Rotterdam in 1940. It has a striking history as the place from which the Pilgrim Fathers left for America and as the birthplace of Piet Hein.

In the past, people in Delfshaven earned their living by fishing herring and distilling gin. Historic Delfshaven has always managed to keep its authentic looks, with the old-fashioned corn mill De Distilleerketel as an important landmark.

Originally Delfshaven was part of Delft. In 1795 it became an independent municipality, to be annexed by Rotterdam in 1886.

Delfshaven was created in 1389, when the Delfshavense Schie was dug to connect the city of Delft with the Maas. Since then, the ships have been able to reach the Nieuwe Maas from Delft via the Delftse and Delfshavense Schie. The harbor town of 'Delfshaven' was created around the lock. It had the status of a 'colony of Delft'. A setback in growth took place when at the end of the Hoekse and Kabeljauwse disputes (around 1490) the Hoeken wreaked havoc. At the beginning of the sixteenth century, Delfshaven had just over 100 houses and 400 inhabitants.

Historisch Delfshaven

The Camel served as a malt mill until the early morning of March 20, 1865. On that day, a gust of wind blew the blades and the upper shaft of the mill. Whether this was due to the combination of a heavy load on the structure and a heavy gust of wind or was done deliberately to collect insurance money by the then new owner has long been a point of discussion in the Schiedam mill community in the 19th century. Afterwards, the mill served as a steam sawmill for several years after partial repairs.

The remains ofthe Camel [De Kameel] were demolished in 1868, after a fire in the mill stump.

Of all the mills that the city has had and of which reconstruction was feasible, De Camelwas the most visible from the city center. The city, which profiles itself as a mill town, wanted a clearly visible mill in the center.

Reconstruction on the original site was not feasible, because the turning basin in the Schie was moved in 1960 for the construction of a new access road with bridge to the center.

The bridge is open for boats to pass underneath. In this case the road is going up.

Rotterdam, Spaanse Polder

High on the Euromast you can get an excellent view of the complicated and intricate waterworks of one of the world's largest harbors, that of Rotterdam. Of course there are the huge waterways leading out to the North Sea; but there are many smaller ones as well. Due to varying water levels, there are lots of locks and sluices allowing for smooth passage of ships.

This photo from on high shows the Greater and Lesser Park Locks. Via the Park Harbor, bottom of the photo, they connect to the New Meuse and onward to the Sea. This is all at NAP (Amsterdam Ordnance Datum) which equals sea level. At the top of the photo is the Coolhaven, which gives out from the Delfshavense Schie (at about 2.45 m NAP) and delivers from Delft and The Hague.

Through these locks passes mainly gravel and sand shipping (the Greater one) and recreational sailing (the Lesser one).

The name Coolhaven derives ultimately from a medieval township (ca. 1280) cobbled together from the areas of Cool, Blommersdijk and Beukelsdijk. The harbor itself was dug in the early twentieth century - after great social unrest -, the locks were constructed in 1933.

The former Van Nelle Factory (Dutch: Van Nellefabriek) on the Schie river in Rotterdam, is an important historic industrial building in the world.

The buildings were designed by architect Leendert van der Vlugt from the Brinkman & Van der Vlugt office in cooperation with civil engineer J.G. Wiebenga, at that time a specialist for constructions in reinforced concrete, and built between 1925 and 1931. It is an example of Nieuwe Bouwen, modern architecture in the Netherlands.

In the 20th century it was a factory, processing coffee, tea and tobacco and later on additional chewing gum, cigarettes, instant pudding and rice. Currently it houses a wide variety of new media and design companies and is known as the Van Nelle Design Factory ("Van Nelle Ontwerpfabriek" in Dutch). Some of the areas are used for meetings, conventions and events.

The Van Nelle Factory shows the influence of Russian constructivism.

The Van Nelle Factory is a Dutch national monument (Rijksmonument) and in June 2014 it was added to the Unesco list of world heritage sites.

View from the Erasmus bridge across the Nieuwe Maas to the port area of Rotterdam

The Nieuwe Maas is the river to which the cities of Rotterdam, Schiedam and Vlaardingen are situated. The river rises at Svkerveer from the confluence of the Lek and the North and ends 24 kilometers west of Vlaardingen, from which it joins the Oude Maas and via the Tear and finally flows from the Maeslantkering via the Nieuwe Waterweg to the North Sea . The main tributary is the Dutch IJssel which adds 4 kilometers from the beginning, at the level of Kralingseveer, to the Nieuwe Maas. More generally there are the Rat and the Schie.

Thank you for a visit, comment or fav!

Reconstruction on the original site was not feasible, because the turning basin in the Schie was moved in 1960 for the construction of a new access road with bridge to the center.

The mill would then be free-standing in the water. A location was chosen nearby, where the mill, like the original Kameel, was built half in the water of the Schie. After years of preparation, the De Schiedamse Mills Foundation started rebuilding De Camel {kameel] on Monday, November 10, 2008. The mill measures approximately 33.3 meters to the roof. This makes this mill the smallest of the existing or rebuilt Schiedam mills. The roof was placed on the mill on December 10, 2010. On Saturday, May 14, 2011, National Mill Day, the Kameel officially operated for the first time. De Camel [Kamee]l has been able to grind since May 14, 2011.

J.G. Schiedam is a city and municipality in the province of South Holland in the Netherlands. It is part of the Rotterdam metropolitan area. The city is located west of Rotterdam, east of Vlaardingen, and south of Delft. In the south it is connected with the village of Pernis by the Beneluxtunnel.

The city is known for its historical center with canals, and for having the tallest windmills in the world. Schiedam is also famous for the distilleries and malthouses and production of jenever (gin) − such as the internationally renowned Ketel One − so much so that in French and English the word schiedam (usually without a capital s-) refers to the town's Holland gin. This was the town's main industry during the early Industrial Revolution in the 18th and 19th century, a dark period to which it owed its former nickname "Zwart Nazareth" or "Black Nazareth". Furthermore, the city is known for Saint Lidwina, one of the most famous Dutch saints (her relics are located in the Liduina Basilica in Schiedam).
