You're breaking us, you're breaking us,
You're killing us, killing us,
You're saving us, you're saving us,
You're tearing us, you're tearing us,
You're breaking us, breaking us,
You're killing us, killing us,
You're saving us."
Shooting people portraits comes very naturally to me. At least up until the point I'm actually getting paid to do it. I've got a tendency to stiffen up in these settings, and even get a bit frantic when things go off track. And so it was in a session I did with Katey for her senior portraits. A huge responsibility actually, the senior portrait thing. You really want to capture the essence of the person on the cusp of transitioning from high school to the rest of their life. You are quite literally creating a visual documentation that they can look back on for the rest of their life. So yeah, no pressure here.
The challenge for me in this situation is coming in stone cold, never having met the subject and knowing next to nothing about them. I've come to rely mostly on instinct while trying to steadily build rapport and put them at ease. Katey looked impossibly young when I first met her, more like a freshman than a senior. But I soon found that her facial expression had a dramatic impact on her look. The initial photos in the session revealed her girlish side. As the shoot progressed I stopped trying to get her to smile and just went with the flow. We moved on to a nature preserve for the final series. Walking along a trail I suddenly stopped in front of this field of prairie grass. The light and setting seemed perfect. Katey stepped into the scene and it all felt right. My initial nervousness vanished. I felt totally at ease and confident. I always shoot many multiples of the same pose in the knowledge that even a subtle variation in facial expression can transform a portrait. Reviewing the results later, this shot really stood out from the others. Katey had somehow transformed from from a teenager into an older version of herself. There's a sense of serenity on her face, and a lovely Mona Lisa smile that falls somewhere between serious and happy. In this moment it felt like we were in perfect sync.
The most terrible thing about last semester was being entirely alone and having no solitude. I feel that I just barely escaped a very close snare. One that knew me personally, wanted to take my life into its menacing death-jaw: irreligiousness, weakness, boredom, trivial moving here and there but achieving nothing.

Because we have a kitten who loves people food and because we have April birthdays, this was hidden in the fridge for me to find!….

Frankfurt Zeil. The business concept of buying and selling mobile phones and notebooks makes sense and also contributes to environmental protection. CO2 savings is an advertising phrase without evidence. But the store is good. I discovered and bought a Zen notebook from Asus there.

A very gloomy day down on the beach, and although that darn wind was blowing again, it wasn't as cold as earlier this week.
And I haven't even left my bed! I do, however, need help from some friends, no, ALL my friends. Actually, make that everybody. Just help me out and you will be my friend.
The time turner appears in the Harry Potter series of books and films. It is used by Hermione initially to save time so she can double up on classes. Later, in the Prisoner of Azkaban, she and Harry use it to travel a short distance back in time (1 Hour) to save Buckbeak and Sirius Black.
The keychain is 3.5 inches long, including extended chain fob, The outer ring of the time turner is approx 1.5 inches in dia and this shot was another posibility for the Macro Monday theme "Keychain".

At the Outdoor Lab school near Mount Evans, Colorado
Recent budget cuts have lead to the suspension of the Outdoor Laboratory Schools in Jefferson County, Colorado. The program has been around for more than 50 years. I have had the privilege of both attending when I was a sixth grader and also teaching classes at the school while my little brother attended. My dad even went to the school when he was a kid. It is a Jefferson Country tradition that kids have been able to experience for years. Outdoor Lab is an incredibly important program, especially for the kids who attend who have not spent much time up in this beautiful place that we live in. I have both witnessed and experienced the good that this program can do. However, in order to keep the school up and running, they need private funding, and lots of it.
Please take the time to go to the website listed above, watch the news story on the program, and donate some money. Any amount helps to keep the school going!
I may end up edited out, but hey, I looked TOUGH!!

Holly Hunter touched me AND gazed into my eyes (with suspicion, she was looking for a "bad guy" disguised as a cop. I was a good guy disguised as a cop). She is tiny.
krys, photosynthesizing this past Sunday. My day started with confusion because I wasn’t aware that the time was changing (still don’t know why), but my afternoon was a clear sky full of sun and a great shoot with Krys. So many shots I’m waiting on Polaroid Week to share. It can’t come soon enough.
These posters have started showing up all over the city, asking to save the nightlife wich is at the moment quitte limited due to the pandemic.
The road to Sanctuary of Caraça Complex, a few hours away from Belo Horizonte, this wonderful private sanctuary preserves a fascinating landscape and ecology. One road in, one road out 2 days later, could have spend a week there exploring!
