MK map sampler finished - blogged here!

A sampler I made for my parents' Ruby Wedding in 1992, three colours of stranded cotton on cream Aida fabric. based on various traditional and traditional-style sampler bands. Cross stitch and double-running stitch.

When last seen, my floss colour wheel was missing a good green and blue. Or rather, I had yet to find one I liked. I knew I wanted something that at least reminded me of Hooker's Green, though what I finally picked has a definite influence of Forest Green.

When picking up craft paint to finish St George, I grabbed an "Azure" and I liked how it acted with both yellow and red, so there you go, a blue I do not want to kill. The floss is a little lighter, but whatev.

There are spaces for paint swatches, when I unpack the paints. I used my basic lettering alphabet and my favourite dozen-plus stitches, which are mostly chain and buttonhole variants.

Estes são os 9 blocos que vão compor meu sampler, não necessariamente nesta ordem. Estou dando andamento no bloco do bordado

Continuing in a similar way, but bolder. The petal/leaf shapes are appliqued.

I made this ribbon embroidery wedding sampler for my son and daughter-in-law. It was the first time I'd ever done ribbon embroidery. From the date on it, you can see that it is 10 years old.

Present from my friend Linda, sadly no longer with us, a cross-stitch sampler with two different fonts for the alphabet , obviously also including two x-es :-)

Pattern: Daisychain ABCs by Alicia Paulson.

Up to date squares for the wisecraft sampler afghan.

These blocks are 3 years old. I made some of them and received others in various swaps. This is item 3 for the DSMMQG wip challenge.

40 RMB ($6.15) @ Domino's Pizza, 8773-2071. Cheesy dots, popcorn chicken, tater tots, BBQ wings. Not pictured were the order of fries and 2L coke. With so many fast food chains now offering healthy crap (and even replacing the fats), I advocate the creation of the Heritage Menu. KFC chicken in China tastes like crap, it's missing at least 9 of the 12 herbs and spices. Veggie burgers in India? Bullshit! Fuck you!

Mini space sampler - four tiles choosen from the 16 tiles original.

This was stitched for a dear friend of mine who studies astrophysics, and these four tiles were particularly meaningful to our friendship.

The larger sampler was designed by Geri Ambrose of The Mathyspere (bought on Etsy).

Kez is my goddaughter so it was lovely to be able to design a sampler for her wedding. This is my favourite quote for wedding pieces - I've used it several times before.

before pressing and framing. i added a J because matt kept giving me a hard time about me "forgetting" it.

Sampler video of heavily processed images of Assam. I use this particular image to test seed images from a couple of commercial applications I used to generated these images. The original image is from several years ago in California.

Week 1 of my sampler, from Sharon's class at Joggles. Such a lot of fun, exploring a stitch, dreaming up variations of it, and trying different effects. Who would think the purple patch at top right is exactly the same stitch as the green patch below it!

I am leaving blank areas so I can add more variations as I htink of them in the future.

This is a sampler worked by Mary Jane Brown aged 9 in 1858. It is interesting that given the discovery of synthetic dyes in 1856 and the increasing number of colours available to Mary (compare this with Martha Barnes') that she has chosen to work the sampler in black.

This sampler is currently on display in the Hazards of Life section of our History Gallery.

Samplers were first made in the 1400s or 1500s as a way of remembering different types of stitches or patterns. Over time they evolved into pieces of work made by young girls, proving their knowledge and patience.

The Herbert has over 60 samplers in its collection. With volunteers from NADFAS we have recently completed a project to improve their storage and to make them more accessible. You can see some of the samplers on display at the Herbert in the History Gallery, Connected and in What's in Store.

Deschutes Brewery...did the tourist thing with a visiting friend this weekend. I really liked the visual (and taste) of the beer sampler. The OR 151 was icky, though.

Got this piece to use live, but hopefully I'll manage to integrate its workflow in the studio too.

Dated 1697, my mother was looking through a box of old stuff with Grandma (her mother) and this old grungy faded looking embroidery looked interesting to her. Mom asked if anyone had asked for it and grandma said no, Did I want it? Mom actually washed it with mild detergent and much later discovered the date, and then of course, got the word from the Friesmuseum that it was probably authentic. The family came from Witmarsum, Friesland.

I decided to experiment with herringbone stitch in a variety of threads, stranded variegated cotton, perle 5 and wool.

The last 2 rows are two rows of herringbone worked on top of each other, the last is varigated green and purple perle, the row above pink and purple dmc fine wool/

Close up of embroidery in progress.
