The first person in Knowsley to get the Government’s Excellent Teacher status is retiring after four decades in the same school.
Patricia Holden, from Huyton, has taught around 1500 children in 38 years at Prescot Primary in Maryville Road.
The 60 year old has taught all ages and was twice described by Ofsted inspectors as “more than outstanding”.
She is leaving to spend more time on holidays with her husband and looking after her brother who’s recovering from a serious illness.
“She has passion, drive and relentless energy,” said Catherine Fairhurst, head teacher at Prescot Primary.
“She’s a natural, but also very hardworking. There’s never been a day when she hasn’t given 100 per cent.
“She believes in every child and their ability to achieve. But adults can learn from her as well – she’s such a good role model and very good at developing other people’s skills.”
Patricia started teaching at Prescot in 1973, one year before the borough of Knowsley was created.
“It was Division 16 Lancashire in those days,” said Patricia.
“I was teaching when Knowsley was formed so no-one can claim they have taught here longer than me!
“It doesn’t feel real to be leaving – I’ll really miss the children and the staff. We’re like a family.”
Patricia is also hoping to continue her life long interest in history in retirement.
She said: “When my brother was ill recently, I realised there’s still a lot of other things I want to do with my life.
“I’d like to go to night school, have holidays and spend more time with my brother.
“But I’ll always come back to visit – after 38 years here I won’t be able to stay away.”
Church of St Andrew
Monument to Sir Arthur (1629) and Elizabeth (1627) Coke. Marble, north chancel, delivered 1634, Nicholas Stone
The long inscription reads: HERE LYETH BURIED ARTHUR COKE ESQ. THIRD SON OF SIR EDWARD COKE KNIGHT LATE LORD CHIEF JUSTICE OF ENGLAND & OF THE PRIVYE COUNSELL OF KING JAMES. HERE LYETH ALSO BURIED IN THE SAME TOMB ELIZABETH DAUGHTER AND SOLE HEIRE APPARENT OF SR GEORGE WALDEGRAVE KNIGHT. ELIZABETH CHRISTIANLY AND PEACEABLY DEPARTED THIS LIFE THE 14TH DAY OF NOVEMBER ANNO DOMINI 1627. THE SAID SIR ARTHR LIKEWISE CHRISTIANLY & PEACEABLY DEPARTED THIS LIFE AT BURY ST EDMUNDS IN THE CONTY OF SUFFOK ON THE 6TH DAY OF DECEMBER 1629. THEY HAD ISSUE BETWENE THEM LIGINGE AT THEIR DECEASES FOURE DAUGHTER. VIZ ELIZABETH, MARY, WINIFRED AND THEOPHILA WHOM ALMIGHTY GOD PROSPER AND PROTECT
Sir Arthur in plate armour, trunk, hose and a plain collar kneels in prayer facing the altar. He is set in a niche of black marble framed by seven cartouches with coats of arms and set above the tomb chest, where Lady Elizabeth lies, her head on twin cushions, holding a child in swaddling clothes (to indicate death) and looking to heaven. The frame is slightly awkward, and White has suggested that it may once have had a canopy. Comparison with the Monument to Lady Katherine Bertie of Lindsey (Paston) †1636 at Oxnead, who is set in a comparable black niche, suggests rather that Stone may have planned, but not executed, a broken curved pediment of white marble (see composite photo with Oxnead pediment). The entry in Stone’s notebook refers to the completion and installation of the tomb in 1634, on receiving the final payment from Sir Arthur’s brother, Sir Robert. Sir Arthur had made an initial down payment of £60 in his lifetime and his brother the balance of £70. This was £70 less than Stone’s monument Oxnead, a discrepancy which might explain the lack of a pediment and the prominence of the top cartouche with its coat of arms.
That the final payment came five years afer Sir Arthur’s death reflects that Sir Robert presumably waited until he had received a considerable legacy on the death (in 1634) of his father Sir Edward Coke, the Lord Chief Justice. The delay is reflected in the contrast between the statues. Sir Arthur’s was presumably finished soon after this death and first payment. It is well observed and executed, a point underlined by comparison with that of his father of 1639 at Tittleshall, by Stone’s assistant John Hargrave. That of Elizabeth is in finer more polished marble with a change in style that reflects, as Margaret Whinney noted: ‘Stone’s experience of the classical sculpture purchased by Charles I from the Mantuan collection in its use of small fine folds.’ To which may be added the exquisite decorative detail, both of her dress and of the cushions on which she lies.

The surname is the same, but we are totally unrelated.
8 September 2024: we are back to hot weather, 30C. Sunny. Hopefully, people will follow the water restrictions more responsibly, as Calgarians continue to use too much water while the water main is still being repaired. They reckon there are still another two and a half weeks till repairs will be finished.
After nine days at home, including the long weekend when I knew that there would be so many people on the roads and everywhere, I finally got out the day before yesterday, 5 September 2024. My daughter had a free day, so was able to join me.
There were a couple of long roads that I had longed to drive, one of which I had never driven before, but I just kept putting it off, feeling not quite brave enough to do it by myself. So, yesterday was the day, and it turned out to be a great day. Not many birds to see anywhere, though several hawks, but a number of new-to-us old barns.
Most of the drive was on main roads, with just very few rough back roads. This was to save time, as I wasn't sure how long the total drive would take. From Calgary, we first headed S and then SW. The first road travelled was a road that I had been along several times a few years ago. However, this was with car-pooling and so I never drove. Part way along this road, the road split into two directions. I have driven the S way, but never W. Yesterday, we went W, passing through a coulee which had forest on the S side of the road and hills and rugged cliffs on the N side. I had been on a number of wonderful Christmas Bird Counts over the years, along this road. Several farms/ranches looked familiar as we had called in at various locations to chat with the owners and check what birds were being seen. How I miss those days!
The rest of the drive along this road, as far as one of the highways going S, was beautiful, with rolling hills and very scattered farms. Fortunately, the weather was good, though there was a lot of haze which made zoomed photography a real challenge, if not useless.
At one point, my daughter said she could see some very distant barns - her eyesight is so much better than mine! Turning along a rough back road, we eventually found a wonderful cluster of old barns, really the highlight of our day. Such a treat to see something new. Several curious farm horses were nearby and came to say Hi just as I was turning my car around. Further along the main road, we stopped to take a few very quick photos of a Swainson's Hawk perched on a rather ugly fence post. So happy to see a bird and actually get a photo or two.
Once we reached the main highway, we went N and quickly checked along one side road before getting on to another main highway going from W to E, A highway that I had driven before, a number of times. Stopped to capture a farmer working hard to harvest his huge field. Thank you to ALL farmers!
A barn or two later, we eventually reached the other main highway going S to N, in the area where we stopped for an old grain elevator. A few clicks and then we were on our way home, going N. A sudden thought that perhaps we could call in at the Saskatoon Farm as it was still only mid-afternoon. I was able to pick up a few beets and potatoes, lettuce and a small Patty pan squash, as my daughter was able to carry them out to the car for me, which was great.
My favourite kind of day, so I'm feeling very lucky.

The same as with the doodles in my notebook, I just like to take photos of my artwork - these are oil paintings taken from different angles and using simple effects (negative, solarize etc).
Not here as a great example of photography, just me wanting to share my art with you.

No more Queensday in Holland. It's replaced by Kingsday, a few days earlier. But for the rest, all stays the same. Most bigger cities have "Vrijmarkten", where you can sell stuff on the street without a permit. And where kids show their skills (if any) on instruments for a few eurocents.
Always great fun, like this one in Den Haag near my house.
WTJ and yuk same keys while texting.....haha. So, I had my husband's leftover sandwich for lunch at the office. I didn't eat that avocado on the right there, because it fell out and touched the desk. ewww.
Cheetos don't really make as much of an orange mark as you'd think.
I'd normally have my food sitting on a napkin, so I just used the book instead.
TO VIEW sit back from your monitor 2 feet and place your index finger about 10 inches in front of your eyes and focus on your finger. This will cause your eyes to go comfortably cross eyed. Keep that same cross eyed focus and notice there are now 3 photos in the back ground. Do not let your eyes leave the cross eye as you look at the middle picture which has appeared. Now increase or decrease how much your eyes are cross eyed until the image pops into 3D. Your eyes will want to leave the cross eye, but fight that urge. This is an acquired skill and takes practice. Stop if it's uncomfortable.
When I created a chalkboard card the other day, I made extras for all the Christmas foliage and snowflakes and rather than let them go to waste I created this card – two cards same supplies (more of less).
