A fun set - They look like good friends more than a dating couple (or couples?). I like the outfit on the girl in the right hand photo and I like his hat.

No info on photo. Also, see Set 1 of 2.

6th Battalion Royal Australian Regiment (6 RAR)

The 6th Battalion was first raised at Enoggera on the 6th of June 1965. The Battalion has served twice in Vietnam and has recently served in East Timor and currently has members serving in Iraq. The Battalion was involved in the famous battle of Long Tan and one of its companies received the United States Presidential Distinguished Unit Citation.

From ABC

A sea of people, including family and friends of returned Australian soldiers will line the streets of Brisbane on Saturday to welcome home the soldiers of the 7th Brigade and to mark the end of their contribution to operations in Iraq, Afghanistan and East Timor in 2010.

The Welcome Home Parade will honour the Brisbane based 6th Battalion Royal Australian Regiment (6 RAR) who are returning from active duty in Afghanistan.

The march across the city will be made up of Artilleryman, Signallers, The Light Horse Brigade, 6 RAR and The Engineer Regiment.

Starting in Southbank, returned soldiers will march over the Victoria Bridge and make their way into the CBD, marching down George St, Adelaide St, and looping around to Ann St where they will finish up at King George Square.

Graham Smith from the 6th Battalion Royal Australian Regiment Association says this is an important time for the returned soldiers.

"We are so highly thought of all around the world in terms of soldiering and these boys have represented themselves very well.

"They've been in arduous (and) very dangerous circumstances, they haven't complained, they have acquitted themselves in the greatest traditions of 6 RAR and the Australian Army and I think they deserve to be acknowledged for what they have done, on this day, rather than waiting for Anzac Day, when we acknowledge the Australian contribution to defence right around the world", he says.

Speaking to ABC Local Radio in Brisbane Mr Smith explained that the march also was a time to honour the memory of the soldiers from 6 RAR that have fallen in the line of duty.

As a result of the Australian defence support in Afghanistan this year, six serving Queenslanders won't be returning home.

In August 2010 6 RAR Private's Grant Kirby, 35, and Tomas Dale, 21, were killed by a roadside bomb.

One month earlier another 6 RAR Private, Nathan Bewes, 23, was killed and the Brisbane-based 2nd Combat Engineer Regiment also lost Sappers Jacob Moerland, 21, and Darren Smith, 25, in June.

Whether you agree or disagree with Australia's involvement in overseas defence, Mr Smith, who was part of the original 6th Battalion that was formed in 1965, says the march is particularly important for the soldiers themselves.

"The significance of this march brings me back to when I returned from Vietnam in 1967, and we marched through Brisbane...that was such a proud occasion and it just made me feel, and I'm sure it was the same for all my mates, that what we endured for the 12 months previous was worthwhile that we were appreciated.

"It will be special, and I'm travelling from my home in Wide Bay to attend", he says.

Members of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Savannah District judged more than 100 science projects created by local middle and high school students at the Georgia Tech Regional Science and Engineering Fair, Feb. 15, 2012, at the Coastal Georgia Center in downtown Savannah. The team selected two high school students and two middle school students to receive special awards from the Corps of Engineers and the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME). Col. Jeff Hall, Corps’ Savannah District Commander and SAME Savannah Post President, presented the awards to the winning students during an awards ceremony on Feb. 16. Photo by George Jumara.

King County Executive Dow Constantine issues marriage licenses to same-sex couples just after midnight on December 6th, 2012 at the King County Administration Building in Seattle, Washington.

After midnight there were a couple hundred people congratulating newly licensed couples as they left the building, which happened every 3-4 minutes. By 2 AM only a handful of supporters remained, enthusiastically congratulating the couples, giving them roses and gift bags and taking their photos, still coming out at the rate of roughly one couple every 3-4 minutes. I left at about 4 AM, nearly hypothermic for the second time in a week...even the broadcast media people were holed up in their vans, almost all of the volunteers had gone home, and it was just like any other night...except that every 3-4 minutes, a happy, exhausted couple would leave the administration building with big marriage license certificates. And Dow Constantine would be doing one of three things: signing certificates, shaking hands, and sometimes having his photo taken as he signed a couple's certificate. Solid. For all I know he's still there now.

The people leaving the King County Administration building on December 6th 2012 were almost totally unremarkable. They were of no particular age bracket, no single race seemed disproportionately represented, relative to the population of Seattle as I know it. There was nothing unusual about these people: they didn't even seem to be particularly gay, except the couples were of the same gender. And I guess that's my point: there is nothing more normal, or less unusual, than one man helping his spouse transition from his walker to a wheelchair after 37 years of partnership.

I'm thankful I saw this day come to pass. I'm not used to feeling hopeful about the future but I can't help but think today's events are part of a trend where "normal" is going to get a lot more normal. Finally.

Silver Lake and Spirit Lake are located along the same stretch of highway, known as State Route 504 or Spirit Lake Highway. I originally posted this shot with the title Spirit Lake. This is actually Silver Lake.

Spirit Lake is much closer to Mount Saint Helens and figures prominently in the story of the Mount Saint Helens eruption. As a result of the pyroclastic material deposited by the eruption, the lake bed rose by over 200 feet and remains that way today. The lake is also much smaller in terms of water volume.

The little white blob, and its reflection, toward the left edge of the image, is Mount Saint Helens, minus its once perfect dome. A new dome has begun to emerge with recent volcanic activity, but it will be a long time before the mountain looks as it once did, if it ever does.

An entertaining telling of the events surrounding the eruption can be found in the movie St. Helens, starring, of all people, Art Carney (best known as Ed Norton on The Honeymooners) as Harry R. Truman, an 83-year-old lodge owner who refuses to leave the area and dies there.

Cloudberry

Lakka / hilla / suomuurain in Finnish, hjortron in Swedish.

The cloudberry (Rubus chamaemorus) is a slow-growing alpine or sub-Arctic species of Rubus, producing amber-colored edible fruit (see my photo).

The ripe fruits are golden-yellow, soft and juicy, and are rich in vitamin C. When eaten fresh, cloudberries have a distinctive tart taste. When over-ripe, they have a creamy texture and flavor somewhat like yogurt. They are often made into jams, juices, tarts, and liqueurs. I have always loved cloudberry flavored ice creams!

In Nordic countries traditionally liqueurs such as Lakkalikööri (a Finnish liqueur) are made of cloudberry. It has a strong taste and a high sugar content. Cloudberry has also served as a spice for aquavit. A cloudberry liqueur is also made in the north eastern Quebec region of Canada. The liqueur is known as chicoutai, which is the local Aboriginal name for the cloudberry.

Coral Garden and Marine Park, a 150-hectare protected marine sanctuary just off the coast of Talikud Island

Island Garden City of Samal, Davao del Norte, Philippines

Blessed with natural attractions such as a white sand beach, crystal clear water, abundant marine life and flourishing flora and fauna, Coral Garden is home to about 250 species of aquarium fish, 53 out of 73 genre of corals and 9 out of 13 species of sea grasses found in the Philippines.

Davao has a lot of dive shops offering recreational scuba lessons and diver certification courses, and the shallow reefs at this marine park provide a great place to start for wanna-be snorkelers and divers.

Coral Garden and Marine Park was our last stop during our Samal Island boat cruise.

A couple of women ahead of me on 46th Street after I talked to them about the eclipse and some places they could go if they want to see more, if the clouds clear up... I wasn't following them, we were just kind of going the same way for a bit, but I was behind as I was stopping to take pictures...

"The old home town looks the same,

As I step down from the train,

And there to meet me is my mama and papa

Down the road I look and there runs mary

Hair of gold and lips like cherries

It's good to touch the green, green grass of home

Yes, they'll all be there to meet me,

All creatures smiling sweetly

It's good to touch the green, green grass of home

The old house is still standing,

Though the paint is cracked and dry

And there's an old oak tree that I used to play on

Down the lane I'll walk with my sweet mary

Hair of gold and lips like cherries

It's good to touch the green, green grass of home

Then I awake and look around me

Cold gray walls surround me

And I realize that I was only dreamin'

There's a guard and there's a sad old padre

Arm and arm we'll walk at daybreak

Again I'll touch the green, green grass of home

Yes, they'll all be there to meet me

In the shadow of that old oak tree

As they lay me beneath the green, green grass of home" Green Green Grass of Home..Claude Putnam jr.
