Memories of my Canoe Buddy
A good friend of mine passed way. It's been a little while, but I have so many fond memories. We religiously spent a week or two in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area every year and he was my tent mate and paddle and portage buddy. The BWCA is a true wilderness covering more than one million acres, with 1,100 lakes and 1,200 miles of canoe routes. No engines are allowed , your paddle is your only transportation, and anything you want to take with you – tent, sleeping bags, food, and so on must be carried on your back across miles of portages in between lakes. You might not see another person for days. Nothing but quiet and nature is a mental reset and truly relaxing. The only problem was every year it seemed we over estimated how much territory we could cover. A disciplined schedule was required.
This is a story I wrote years ago about one of our best days ever. It made me smile so allow me to share:
------
Our plan was to get up, have a quick breakfast, tear down camp and get an early start on the day. Ahead of us was a difficult but scenic 13 mile, 4 portage leg of our canoe trip that we had mapped out around the campfire the night before. We woke at dawn, right on schedule. Boiling water, brewing coffee and frying up a skillet of hash brown potatoes and eggs also went off without a hitch. The plan wasn’t really threatened until we wandered down to the edge of our gorgeous lake and sat down for breakfast on a perfectly-situated rock in a warm sunbeam. Somehow that hard rock with a view just got more and more comfortable.
While we continued to discuss the difficult task ahead, and the agreed upon need to get an early start, a beaver silently swam by hauling freshly chewed branches to his home on a small island. We talked and laughed and admired the beaver’s energy and the gorgeous day long after the coffee was finished and the Grey-Jays and chipmunks had picked over the potato scraps.
We had almost used up the extra 20 minutes we had given ourselves to watch the slowly rising sun burn the fog off the glassy water, when the beaver swam back from the island empty handed. And only 20 minutes later we spotted him again pushing another load of freshly cut branches to the island by the exact same route. Fascinated, we made time in our grueling schedule to more closely study his efforts. We could practically set our watches to his energetic construction timeline. He eagerly swam back and forth and back and forth at almost exact twenty minute intervals.
We were impressed that he could keep up his clock-work like routine for an hour, and then two. By our close observation, he did not deviate even once from his disciplined, steady work schedule until well after lunch.
I miss you buddy!
In the morning, the cats wait until I'm ready to go downstairs with them. They could go alone, but they don't want to. So they watch me and sometimes even meow at me because it takes them too long.
I love our morning ritual.

Well, today was the first day that we had escapees from the inner cat sanctum!! Smokey Lonesome cannot get her head out of the chain link fence, but guess what?! Wynken, Blynken and Nod can!
This is Blynken, exploring just beyond his mother’s reach in the cat pen, which you can see the edge of there on the right! I netted up six inches, thinking kittens would be too big to crawl through by the time they noticed the netting!! Already they have ALL been out. It would be a nice way to assimilate them into “the People” but oh my! Smokey Lonesome is furious seeing any of “the People” around her babies. Sigh. I expect I will be up early to see if any of the little squirts are outside the inner pen, though they will be safe in the cat-safe yard. And "the People" will be good with them, having seen them for almost 5 weeks now.
Happy Caturday! - Routine
I take the cats on about 3 morning walks and one afternoon walk but today as our days are getting longer I decided to take the boys for an afternoon stroll to watch the sun go down but as you can see Charlie was ready for bed as usually by this time he is inside sucking on his blanket before he falls asleep for the night.
Nothing like having a routine.... ;)
. . . involves preparing three square meals a day, even though I'd rather be behind my camera. As I was preparing BLT sandwiches for lunch today - the Macro Mondays theme "My Daily Routine" popped into my head, so I stopped everything to take a few shots.
HMM everyone.
A photo of a Scooter's Coffee drive-thru taken just before dawn. The scene is bathed in the soft, purplish-pink hues of the pre-sunrise sky, creating a serene and slightly melancholic atmosphere. The low light emphasizes the glow emanating from the coffee shop's signage and street lights, contrasting with the cooler tones of the approaching day.
I intended this image to tell a story of daily life that reflects on the comforting ritual of stopping for morning coffee during a moment of personal routine. Take a moment to recognize the beauty in simple rituals and everyday habits that take place before the world awakens to its typical hustle and bustle.
January's almost over already and no single shot taken yet..
However, soon I'm due to bring some new goodies perhaps.

For Macro Mondays theme - My Daily Routine.
Marking off the interesting and worthwhile tv programs to be watched or recorded.
Some "People Remember" I don't, so out comes the marker pen ;-))
Inspired by the clouds. Love Smartwater Sparkling! The effervescent bubbles just seem so happy as they dance to the top. Water is my favorite beverage and has forever been part of my daily routine.
I was glad to see that Brain Pickings was referenced in the description for this week's theme on Macro Mondays. I read it on Feedly which is also part of my daily routine. I like it because I can subscribe to the news I want and also subscribe to various blogs. Brain Pickings does an excellent job of highlighting very interesting philosophies.
One of my all-time favorite posts from Brain Pickings was about Bruce Lee/Be Water, My Friend. Such a great story. There is a clip from the Longstreet episode in the post, but this clip at about 6:50 puts it in some context.
I also love Shannon Lee's podcasts The Bruce Lee Podcast about her father's life and philosophies. Since it's weekly, it's definitely part of my weekly routine.
Be water, my friend...

Thanks a bunch for all the support! 😁
Walking home from the animal shelter with her new pet (she will go back for her scooter later), Kitty realized that she’s going to need a new routine before and after school. With an elephant in her life, there’s going to be a lot more feeding, watering, cleaning, and playing. It’s time to make a schedule!
